Inc. Media Welcomes New Editor, Publisher

Inc. Media is into its fourth decade now. The company was founded in 1979 and acquired in 2005 by Mansueto Ventures, Inc. In addition to the monthly magazine, it currently counts an average of more than six million monthly unique visitors via Inc.com and The Build Network.

As part of these changes, Eric Schurenberg has moved over to the twin posts of president and editor-in-chief. From the announcement:

Most recently, Ledbetter spent more than three years at Thomson Reuters as its op-ed editor, working with notable names such as Lawrence Summers, Mohamed el-Erian, Steven Brill, Jack Shafer and Bethany McLean. He founded and ran Slate’s financial news site, The Big Money, from 2008 until 2010.

Reuters Again Adds to Opinion Section

Reuters’ Op-Ed section, helmed by James Ledbetter, is still growing. Today, two new columnists  — Bethany McLean and Geraldine Fabrikant — join the team. McLean was a contributing editor at Vanity Fair and has written several books. Fabrikant was most recently a Media Reporter for the New York Times, where she had worked since 1985.

At Reuters, McLean will cover the world of finance, and Fabrikant will focus on the big time names in business.

Reuters Has Opinions and Much More

The Reuters you know is changing. There has been a slow but noticeable march away from a wire news service to a more complete website over the past year. In July, Reuters’ website was revamped to appeal to a wider audience.  In May, the site hired its first Op-Ed Editor, James Ledbetter, and then just last week they grabbed the great Jack Shafer to pen opinion columns.

Today, Adweek caught up with Ledbetter, and he confirmed the move. “We really want to be a leader in the space of opinion and commentary, which has never really been an explicit goal for Reuters in the past,” said Ledbetter. He also stated that the hiring spree isn’t over either, and that the opinion section should mesh perfectly with the other content:

You don’t have to look very hard at the staffing levels of American newspapers to realize that places where you might have had local columnists or a local opinion staff commissioning pieces—in many places those jobs no longer exist. We think that there is a role within the traditional Reuters marketplace for opinion and commentary.

The shift to a more complete site is a good idea, but will it work? Reuters is certainly not the first place most people mention when discussing columnists or moving think pieces. Ledbetter thinks otherwise, and wisely will be leaning on the site’s ace in the hole. “If, six months from now, you haven’t read a Jack Shafer column, call me,” he added.

Reuters Names First Op-Ed Editor, Other Changes

Reuters has announced that James Ledbetter will be its first Op-Ed Editor. According to a memo received received by Poynter, Ledbetter, who has been Editor-in-Charge of Reuters.com since last year, will be replaced by Kenneth Li. Li was previously Editor-in-Charge of Reuters’ technology and media reporting team.

BusinessWeek’s New Hires Include New York Magazine Steal

zooooom.jpgSo the exciting news today is the new Bloomberg LP-owned BusinessWeek, which laid off so many back in October, now officially includes some big-name new hires, the biggest of which may be Hugo Lindgren as executive editor.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek‘s steal of New York magazine’s editorial director is surprising, as Lindgren was Adam Moss‘ right hand man. He’ll begin his new role on March 8.

Also on the Josh Tyrangiel-assembled dream team is Eric Pooley, formerly managing editor of Fortune, who will be taking on the position of deputy editor at Bloomberg BusinessWeek. Ellen Pollock and Ciro Scotti remain the two holdovers from the original magazine to round out the top editorial roster.

Of the staffing announcements made today, Slate‘s James Ledbetter said, “It’s a little like the reuniting of a rock supergroup,” but adds, “it’s not necessarily what the publication truly needs.”

Can’t hurt the image though, after the beating the business magazine took when top editors like John Byrne and Stephen Adler, and president Keith Fox, dropped out of BW once Bloomberg bought it.
