USC Annenberg Names 2011 Health Journalism Fellows

USC Annenberg just announced the names of its 2011 California Endowment Health Journalism Fellows. Among the projects, OC freelance writer Janet Wilson will get $2,000 to write about environmental issues in Maywood. You may recall the brown tap water in that city from a few years back. You may also recall their rather unscrupulous city government.

Bernice Yeung was also awarded $5,000 to investigate health problems in California’s disparate unincorporated communities for California Watch.

The Journalism Shop of Former LAT Staffers Launches

jshop logo temp2 08.02.09.jpg
The Journalism Shop launched yesterday. They describe themselves on the site:

Over the past couple of years the Los Angeles Times and its corporate owner, Tribune, have undergone an epic financial crunch which has led to the jettisoning of hundreds of veteran journalists. We are some of them. Our ranks include veteran political journalists, fashion writers, award-winning investigative journalists and a wide raft of the invisible folks of newspapers – line editors, copy editors, page designers and researchers.

We talked to former LA Times staffer Brett Levy (also see: WriteThru.com) who runs the site. He told us that within the past 36 hours of their soft launch one of the members of the site is “in talks” about work.

The site has no ads, it just showcases the resumes of journos who have left or been left by the LAT. “It’s more like a co-op or a club at this point,” says Levy.

Currently there are roughly 24 members listed on the site, including Scott Martelle, Nona Yates, Nancy Wride, Kristina Lindgren, Janet Wilson, Greg Johnson, Lynne Heffley, Lynn Smith, Rick Schmitt, Jim Fowler, Susannah Rosenblatt, Elizabeth Douglass, Robin Rauzi, Saul Daniels, Richard Cromelin, Robyn Norwood, Rosemary McClure, Karen Chaderjian, Craig Matsuda and Susan Brink.

Is this the solution to the woes of the laid off? Well, when the going gets tough – the tough go freelance.

We have our fingers crossed for all of them.

LAT In 90 Seconds

33429651.jpgThe Future Of Reporting: The LAT’s fire blog is exactly what newspapers will be doing with all breaking news coverage some day. And that’s not a bad thing.

33425367.jpgUnder Pressure: The air thick with anxiety. Harried people rushing about to salvage whatever they can before its too late. Fires? What fires? Rachel Abramowitz and Robert W. Welkos are describing Hollywood as a possible strike looms.

33431116.jpgFirst-Hand Account: Reporter Janet Wilson returned from her wedding to find her neighborhood threatened by flames. In her words: “It was an eerie experience as a reporter because you’re trained to observe and are often thrown into areas you don’t know. But I knew every inch of what I saw today. I know the hills and the houses.”
