Graydon Carter

The other issue at hand is that Carter isn’t sure how much longer he wants to stay at Vanity Fair. He has already been the editor of the magazine for 21 years, so you can hardly blame him. Carter also has other interests, such his overseeing his popular restaurants and producing films.

Charles Townsend, Condé’s CEO, told the Post that all is well and “There are no plans for anyone to succeed Graydon at Vanity Fair.” Which means, of course, it’s time to guess who is succeeding Carter at Vanity Fair! Below are some names that have been circulated:

In keeping with the usual head-spinning weekly scene that is Wednesdays at Michael’s, the joint was jumping today. It was SRO in the front dining room and at the bar where producer Beverly Camhe was holding court with fellow producer Marc Altshuler and writer/directors Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek in celebration of their upcoming documentary In God We Trust Who Pays for His Crime on the Bernie Madoff scandal. The film will debut in the highly coveted Friday night slot at the Tribeca Film Festival next week.

Bev tells me the tickets for the highly anticipated film sold out in ten minutes when they went on sale at with American Express last night, and they are currently looking for a theater to handle the overflow. For those of you who missed the boat entirely, there’s always pay per view. Bev says anyone who sees the film should prepare to be shocked. “Don’t believe what you’ve heard. You’ll be surprised to know who knew what and when they knew it.” For the record, Bev believes that both Madoff sons, the late Mark Madoff and Andrew Madoff, didn’t know anything. I would have loved to have explored that very topic myself when I spotted Mark at Michael’s last spring, but he bolted before I could ask him anything about their father’s massive Ponzi scheme. “Bernie was a bi-polar sociopath, so it’s entirely possible he was able to keep it from them,” says Bev.  I asked Marc if they’d heard from any of the Madoffs or insiders since they began production, and he told me, “They’ve been oddly quiet. I’m surprised they even stayed in New York.” Some people have no shame.

Mickey Ateyeh and Angela Cummings

Not all the action was in the main dining room. I was invited to the swanky lunch held in the Garden Room for Angela Cummings today celebrating the launch of her new collection with Assael. Mickey Ateyeh, Angela’s long time BFF and business partner gathered 24 New York power gals – the ladies who never eat lunch who actually lunched today – for an intimate gathering.  The first to arrive was Liz Smith followed by a veritable who’s who in New York social and business circles, including Paula Zahn, Linda Fairstein, Jackie Leo,  Barbara Taylor Bradford, Christy Ferer, who is in hot pursuit for her company’s next CEO (Anyone?), Fern Mallis, DuJour‘s Cindy Lewis and Judy Licht.

Janice Min, deputy editor of THR, said Belloni was more than qualified to take for the exec editor position. ”In addition to his unparalleled newsroom instincts, Matt has helped steer the news coverage of THR and built the industry’s most eagerly watched blog on the intersection between law and entertainment,” said Min, in a statement. “He’s helped move THR forward into uncharted territory, and will continue to do so in new role as executive editor.”

Brower has held a variety of high-level editorial positions during her career, including executive editor of Redbook and special projects editor at O, The Oprah Magazine.

“Alison has one of the best eyes in the business for creating content that connects readers to publications with special issues, events and partnerships,” Min said. “Her ability to coordinate multiple factors that elevate both editorial and the brand will be key to THR.”

“He [Miller]  has significant digital and print experience and has experience juggling both sides of a chaotic operation,” Min told the Post.

At first glance, it seems Min is settling in nicely with her big move to Los Angeles. But the publishing vet says there are some big differences of the media scene in both coasts that made the transition rough.

“It’s weird,” the editorial director told us. “New York is so media-centric. People find people in the media fascinating.” But L.A., said Min, isn’t down for fawning over big-name editors when there are Hollywood heavyweights stealing the limelight. “There’s no media hangout in L.A.”

Former Forbes magazine columnist Lacey Rose is joining The Hollywood Reporter as a senior writer in the television department.  Rose will be publishing news and offering her analysis on the television industry for both the weekly THR magazine and website.  Editorial director Janice Min is pleased with the newest addition to the team.

We are thrilled to welcome a journalist of Lacey’s caliber to the team.  Lacey is an established media and entertainment reporter and will undoubtedly be a tremendous asset to the team.  We are delighted to have her on board.

In her time at Forbes, Rose covered the TV business and founded the title’s Moneywood blog.  She also co-edited the annual “Celebrity 100” list and appeared on a plethora of shows including NBC’s Today Show, CBS’s Early Show, ABC’s 20/20, Entertainment Tonight, and Extra.

Guider’s fate was sealed back in January with THR‘s takeover by e5 Global Media CEO Richard Beckman and subsequent appointment of former Us Weekly editor Janice Min as new editorial director.  The magazine is heading in a new direction and will depart from the five-times-a-week publication to print one weekly magazine.

According to THR‘s announcement, Guider stepped down for “personal family issues” and cited a “desire to finish a book.”  Guider joined The Hollywood Reporter in 2007 following a stop as executive editor of Variety. 

During Guider’s tenure, THR launched a daily New York edition with morning distribution to New York subscribers as well as communities in major East Coast cities.  THR‘s Premier Edition is available on Manhattan newsstands each weekday morning.  Guider will continue to contribute to the magazine on a freelance basis.

Today, Min took to The New York Post to write an op-ed about being the family breadwinner — and making more in one paycheck than her teacher husband made in a whole year.

While the article deals with Min’s struggles to balance work and home life and avoid wanting to kill her husband for not being able to go grocery shopping, we can never get enough of her Us Weekly anecdotes. Like this one:

“Two months after becoming editor-in-chief, I became pregnant. (I’m sure my boss was not psyched, though he never let on.) Nine months later, I gave birth — just hours after closing an issue and an early morning Today show appearance to talk about J.Lo’s third wedding.”

The Biggest Move in Magazines: Stephen Adler leaving BusinessWeek.
When editor Stephen Adler announced his departure from BusinessWeek this October following the magazine’s sale to Bloomberg LP, he wasn’t just making a statement, he was starting a trend. Soon he was followed by some of his former colleagues, like John Byrne and BusinessWeek‘s president Keith Fox, who decided to stay with magazine’s original parent, McGraw-Hill. (Not to mention all of those who involuntarily left the pub not long after.) It takes a lot of chutzpah to up and quit your editor gig in the middle of this turbulent media landscape, it takes even more to get your coworkers to come with you. Fortunately for Adler, he’s already landed another gig at Thomson Reuters.

But this year, due to the significant changes that have occurred in the past year in the media and magazine worlds, the event is welcoming high profile editors who have left print publications to launch online publications — with a few representing this growing group by speaking on a panel at the event.

The event, which will include a networking cocktail hour with the panel held afterward over dessert, will feature panelists Caroline Little, the CEO of Guardian North America; Caroline Miller, the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Newser; Nicole Stagg, founding editor of Hearst‘s new beauty focused Web site RealBeauty.com; Jennifer Salant, VP of business development at Glam Media and Michelle Adams, a former editor at the now-defunct Domino who recently launched online shelter and lifestyle magazine, Lonny.

The whole event will be emceed by comedienne Sara Benincasa, who gained national notorteity last year thanks to her Sarah Palin impersonations. Benincasa will keep panelists on track with discussions about current projects, the challenges of online content, the benefits of leading an online pub, incorporating multimedia and what all of these new digital publications mean for print editors’ futures.

Attendees will also be encouraged to discuss pressing topics with tablemates, thanks to discussion topics provided at each table. “It’s something we do every year and everyone really likes it,” explained Carmen Scheidel, director of education, events and multimedia content at Mediabistro, who planned the event. “It’s like an ice breaker that’s not corny.”

Min told The New York Times she didn’t know what she would do next, “But I’m 39 and I’d like to have another career. I felt like I’d done every possible thing at Us Weekly to make it successful.”

In a letter to her staffers, obtained by Mediaite.com, Min said she had “decided it was time to try something else in my life, do a little Gosselin detox and occasionally go out on Monday nights.”

Executive editor Michael Steele will be taking over Min’s spot, the magazine’s owner Jann Wenner told the Times.

Former Us editor Bonnie Fuller hired Min as her number two in 2002, and Min took over the magazine’s top editor slot when Fuller left for Star a year later. Last week, Fuller was named editor-in-chief at celebrity Web site HollywoodLife, becoming the latest big name journalist snapped up by the site’s owner Jay Penske for his growing media empire. Might Min be eyeing a spot on Penske’s team? Or, conversely, does Penske have a place for the successful editor? It’s certainly possible, but no matter where she goes next, all eyes will be on her.

New York Observer: Newsweek‘s recent redesign has yet to improve newsstand sales. Sales for the first six weeks after May’s revamp were flat compared to the previous 18 issues in 2009, and the following four weeks showed a pretty steep decline. Is this a reflection of readers’ summer buying habits, lack of interest or a rejection of the magazine’s new look?

Page Six: Is US Weekly editor Janice Min ready to pack in her million-dollar-plus pay check and head to greener pastures? One source told Page Six, “She’s had enough,” and she’s reportedly taking meetings with TV execs while vacationing in Los Angeles.
