WNYM/The Apple Rebrands as The Answer

The Answer Takes a Bite Out of The Apple

The Apple/970 WNYM began running promos recently saying the “Old Apple was going away,” and to check out the station starting today for the answer.

Well, it’s just that–Salem’s owned The Apple has been rebranded as The Answer in on-air promos, top-of-the-hour IDs, and show opens.

The program schedule has been altered slightly, especially the local presence with Curtis Sliwa getting a later morning start. It’s still a three-hour block for the Guardian Angels founder, but now it’s from 7 to 10 a.m.

Nationally heard Bill Bennett‘s Morning in America takes the 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. slot.

A couple of Dennis’ –Miller and Prager get an hour earlier start time for their syndicated shows. Dennis Miller moves to 10 a.m. to noon, while Dennis Prager takes the noon to 3 p.m. block.

The other weekday programming remains unchanged: Michael Medved from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sliwa and Jeffrey Lichtman from 5 p.m to 7 p.m., and Hugh Hewitt on 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The changes were announced by Salem’s new VP and director of spoken word format, Phil Boyce, who joined the company last month.

The Apple’s Curtis Sliwa Drops Saturday Morning Shift

Curtis Sliwa, a workaholic to be sure, is giving up his Saturday morning show on 970 The Apple/WNYM, effective immediately.

Sliwa is the station’s local linchpin, hosting four hours each morning and co-hosting a couple more hours in the drive home.

The opinionated Sliwa, though, is not looking to just lounge in bed. He told his listeners this morning that due to the rise of crime in New York City, he and his fellow Guardian Angels will don the world famous uniform to patrol the streets.

“He’s been so busy,” WNYM program director Peter Thiele tells FishbowlNY. “Something had to give.”

Thiele says ”maybe in the future” he’ll air taped “Best of” Sliwa segments in the 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday slot.

Thiele says Jeffrey Lichtman, a former attorney for John Gotti Jr., has been been removed from his 10 a.m. to noon show. But Thiele hopes to find a better time for the program.

LAT In 90 Seconds — Tupac Edition

37179194-26102002.jpgReality Check: The L.A. Times is reeling from the embarrassing revelation yesterday that a story linking Sean “Diddy” Combs to the murder of Tupac Shakur was, in a word, bullshit. In a story today by James Rainey (man, does that guy get the bum assignments), the paper does a mea culpa, apologizing for writing a story based on fabricated documents, and giving props to the Smoking Gun for figuring the whole thing out.

36768674-14161800.jpgGet Out Your Checkbooks: Rap talent manager James Rosemond said the Times article created “a potentially violent climate in the hip-hop community.” His attorney, Jeffrey Lichtman, added: “I would suggest to Mr. Philips and his editors that they immediately print an apology and take out their checkbooks — or brace themselves for an epic lawsuit.”

4ssss5tqdfagdag.jpgQuestions Remain: We hope this isn’t the last we hear of this story because we still have a ton of questions. For one, Chuck Phillips says he believed the veracity of the forged FBI documents because they were filed in court. So, who filed them? Who masterminded this hoax? So help us, if Ashton Kutcher is involved, we’re gonna throw our computers out the window and move to a farm.
