People Celebrates ‘Most Beautiful’ Issue with Creepy Photos

People’s “World’s Most Beautiful” issue hits newsstands April 25, and to celebrate, the magazine photoshopped celebrities hanging out with their younger selves. Go ahead and click through. If you like disturbing pictures, that is.

The editor who thought of this idea should probably take a week off and think things over. Just get away from it all, you know? Head to Key West or somewhere tropical, enjoy the sun and a Mai Tai or 10, and just contemplate life.

Because once the editor comes back, he or she cannot do the photoshop thing again. It’s creepy and weird.

Especially Jennifer Lopez’s pictures, because she apparently has not aged since 1990. We’d suggest staying away from her. Something is not right with that woman.

AP Photographer Killed, Reporter Wounded in Afghanistan (The Associated Press)
An Afghan police commander opened fire Friday on two Associated Press journalists, killing Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Anja Niedringhaus and wounding veteran correspondent Kathy Gannon — the first known case of a security insider attacking journalists in Afghanistan. FishbowlNY Niedringhaus and Gannon were covering the nation’s election when a policeman opened fire on their vehicle. Niedringhaus was killed instantly and Gannon was shot twice and later underwent surgery. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Niedringhaus and Gannon were traveling in a convoy of election workers delivering ballots from the center of Khost city to the outskirts, in Tani district, protected by the Afghan National Army and Afghan police. As they were sitting in the car waiting for the convoy to move, a unit commander named Naqibullah walked up to the car, yelled “Allahu Akbar” — God is Great — and opened fire on them in the back seat with his AK-47. He then surrendered to the other police and was arrested. BBC News The attack came as Afghanistan intensified security ahead of presidential elections on Saturday, in response to threats of violence by the Taliban. The new president will succeed Hamid Karzai, who has been in power since the 2001 fall of the Taliban but is constitutionally barred from seeking a third consecutive term. The run-up to this historic election had already been the bloodiest, and fears of electoral fraud are pronounced. NYT Niedringhaus, a German citizen who was based in Geneva, first came to Afghanistan after joining the AP in 2002, and she quickly formed a partnership with Gannon. They were among a band of female photographers and correspondents who persevered through many years of conflict in Iraq as well as in Afghanistan. In the process, they helped redefine traditional notions of war reporting. Even as they covered the battlefield, they also focused attention on the human impact of conflicts known for their random, unpredictable violence against civilians.

J. Lo Outbids Diddy for Fuse TV

NuvoTV, the cable channel backed by Jennifer Lopez, has won the bidding war for Fuse Network. Lopez was going head-to-head with her former boyfriend, Diddy, for MSG owned Fuse.

Diddy was the first to make an offer, but his $200 million bid wasn’t enough. The New York Post reports that J.Lo’s slightly higher bid of what has only been described as “more than $200 million” won. By adding Fuse Network, NuvoTV will now reach over 100 million homes across the country. Diddy had wanted to do the same for his network, Revolt TV.

Eric Sherman, the former president of Fuse, told the Post that Diddy losing to J.Lo was “a real blow.”

We’re not so sure. People still like Sean John, right? Right?

J. Lo Battles Diddy for Fuse Network

NuvoTV, the Jennifer Lopez-backed cable channel for Latinos, has made a bid for Fuse Network.

Bloomberg reports that J.Lo’s offer is “cash and equity valued at more than $200 million,” which means she out bid Sean Combs, her former boyfriend. Diddy offered only $200 million for Fuse.

Lopez holds a minority stake in the LA based NuvoTV. The network reaches 34 million homes, so adding Fuse’s 74 million homes would be a huge boost. Diddy’s Revolt TV, meanwhile, currently reaches even less homes — only 22 million.

Fuse TV has more bidders than just J.Lo and Diddy, but they’re the most important because they’re famous. Obviously. So which one will get Fuse? We say let the person with the most nicknames but least amount of terrible music win. It’s a tough call, we know.

Jay Mohr on Juggling Acting Gigs with FOX Sports Radio Duties

Just how hot is Jay Mohr these days?

Well, in the short time between when we spoke to him for Mediabistro’s weekly series “So What Do You Do?” and the publication today of that interview, he added a Hulu game show. Money Where Your Mouth Is premieres later this year and will feature male friends wagering their most prized possessions in a three-round, head-to-head Mohr-hosted battle.

We wondered how Mohr’s daily FOX Sports Radio show is affecting his ability to pursue TV guest star roles, feature films and the like. He told us so far, so good:

“I just did the season finale of Suburgatory, and they were very accommodating. I thought I might have trouble continuing to do the acting, but so far people are making it work.”

Cover Battle: Billboard or Harper’s Bazaar

Welcome back to another edition of FishbowlNY’s Cover Battle, where we ask the question: Does this magazine make our blog look fat? Kidding. We just want to know which cover you prefer. This week we have Billboard versus Harper’s Bazaar.

Billboard’s cover features none other Prince, also known as the Artist, &%$#, or Dude Who Likes Wearing Coffee Filters On His Face.

Which is the Bigger Oscar Snub: Ben Affleck or Kathryn Bigelow?

Seth MacFarlane‘s Hitler joke during this morning’s announcement of the 2012 Oscar nominations rippled awkwardly through the AMPAS room. (And brought back memories for FishbowlLA of Ricky Gervais‘ aborted plans to come out for one Golden Globes telecast dressed as the Führer, waving at the crowd “Heil!” style.)

But that was nothing compared to what happened when the nominees for Best Director were announced. The tweets quickly started flying as west coast entertainment journalists rustled up at the break of dawn reeled in the face of the omission of Ben Affleck (Argo) and Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty). Tom Hooper was also passed over in the category for Les Miserables, but that was something a number of pundits had actually been expecting.

The first wave of shocked analysis is floating all kinds of theories as to why Bigelow and Affleck were snubbed. Did accusations of Zero Dark Thirty being “pro-torture” hurt Bigelow? Was all that fawning over Affleck this awards season too much for jealous Academy members to bear?

Gossip Cop Founder Narrowly Avoids Becoming People’s ‘Hexiest Man Alive’

First, we wrote about how People magazine embedded their 2012 “Sexiest Man Alive” issue into last night’s episode of Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23. Then, we wondered if a November 3 scoop by gossipcop.com “top cop” Michael Lewittes might hex Channing Tatum and prompt the magazine to opt for someone else. Today, with Tatum still strutting his stuff on the cover, we’re debating if mention of the actor in last night’s episode might have had something to do with the magazine’s decision to stick with the 32-year-old actor.

Lewittes’ SMA advance reveal was a huge media scoop, the latest in a long line of solidly vetted exclusives published by the three-year-old New York-based website. “We’ve had a number of scoops,” Lewittes tells FishbowlLA via telephone. “For instance, when no one even had Jennifer Lopez or Steven Tyler for American Idol, we went with it. Everyone thought we were crazy, and when it was announced a couple of weeks later, they realized we were right.”

Adding insult to injury, Gossip Cop posted the Tatum cover at 6:45 a.m. ET this morning, about an hour ahead of people.com, after grabbing a copy at a local newsstand. All in all, we’re pretty sure Lewittes’ nickname around the hallways of the  magazine is nothing close to “magic Mike.”

Mariah Carey Joining American Idol

Pop singer Mariah Carey will join American Idol next season as a judge on the sinking music competition series.

“I am so excited to be joining ‘American Idol,’” Carey said during the Television Critics Association on Monday. “This kind of all just happened really quickly.”

A judge that can actually sing? (Sorry, Jennifer Lopez) What a concept for a singing show.

As for Lopez, executive producer Nigel Lythgoe is holding out hope that J-Lo could return for Season 13, per The Associated Press:

Earlier Monday, veteran “Idol” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said there’s a slender possibility that Jennifer Lopez might return. His reasoning: Since she told “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest she was 99 percent sure she was leaving, that means there’s a 1 percent chance she won’t, Lythgoe said Monday.

That should sum up how desperate the folks over at AI are for another competent judge.

Jennifer Lopez the Latest to Quit American Idol

Guess 12 hours wasn’t enough time for American Idol to convince Jennifer Lopez to stay.

Lopez followed Steven Tyler out the door, calling into Ryan Seacrest‘s radio show on Friday to break the news.

“I honestly feel the time has come to get back to do what I do. I have put it on hold because I love Idol so much. You have a lot of other responsibilities and other things you want to do,” Lopez told Seacrest. ”We had an amazing run.” Read more
