Cover Battle: Billboard or Harper’s Bazaar

Welcome back to another edition of FishbowlNY’s Cover Battle, where we ask the question: Does this magazine make our blog look fat? Kidding. We just want to know which cover you prefer. This week we have Billboard versus Harper’s Bazaar.

Billboard’s cover features none other Prince, also known as the Artist, &%$#, or Dude Who Likes Wearing Coffee Filters On His Face.

Women Occupy Seven out of The Top 10 Spots in Most Powerful List

Forbes’ “Most Powerful Celebrity” list is jam packed with women. In fact, women take seven out of the top 10 spots in the magazine’s report, which ranks people according to earnings and fame. Jennifer Lopez takes the number one spot and Oprah — the highest ranking media mogul on the list — is runner-up. Other women rounding out the top 10 include Rihanna (4), Lady Gaga (5), Britney Spears (6), Kim Kardashian (7) and Katy Perry (8).

We’ve seen this “female focused” trend already, when Time’s annual Time 100 list featured 38 women, more than ever before. Does this mean that 2012 is the year of the woman? Are we even allowed to write that considering Forbes counts Kardashian as “powerful?”

Probably not.

The A-List Returns! Barbara Walters, Charlie Rose, Barry Diller Hold Court at Michael’s

As Januarys go, this one has been a bit of a snoozer, but things are finally picking up now that the boldface names have returned to their regular perches at Michael’s. The joint was jumping today as morning talkers (Charlie Rose, Barbara Walters), media moguls (Barry Diller) and fashionistas (Marie Claire‘s Joanna Coles) were all in full power lunch mode. It’s about time!

I was joined today by Seventeen editor-in-chief Ann Shoket and Hearst executive director of public relations Alexandra Carlin. It’s been a while since Seventeen was required reading in my house (I still remember begging my father to drive me to the stationary store, so I could be the first to get the magazine’s coveted September back to school issue). Back then, I’d devour every oversize page, finding tons of inspiration and validation about surviving the treacherous teenage years in one piece — and in style.

Well, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Ann, who celebrated her fifth anniversary with the magazine last week, says she feels a “huge responsibility” to readers, which means addressing the issues they care most about (a tall order to say the least). Between dealing with ‘sextortion’ (boyfriends threatening to dump girls if they don’t submit sexually) and the barrage of unrealistic images of physical perfection all around them, today’s teenage girls, says Ann, are under “huge pressure” all while dealing with the requisite drama that comes with being a high school girl. Seventeen‘s mission is to empower teenage girls (the average reader is 16), often by reporting on celebrities who can be a source of inspiration. For next month’s cover, the magazine scored the first interview with a post-rehab Demi Lovato who opens up about how she battled back from anorexia, bulimia, bipolar disorder and cutting. “Demi was amazing. It’s so refreshing to have a celebrity be honest about their struggles. It’s great for girls to read about someone like that.”

Diane Clehane, Ann Shoket and Alexandra Carlin

Seventeen, says Ann, is also a resource for girls about subjects they might want to talk about with their parents, but can’t. Topic A: ‘Digital Drama’ – the magazine’s clever moniker for ‘cyber bullying’ which “sounds so nineties.” Seventeen is so committed to wiping out the epidemic that Ann created the ‘Delete Digital Drama’ campaign for the magazine. “We only had to deal with the mean girl phone calls, but today social media has created so many more outlets for bullying to happen. It’s a serious problem.”

Lady Gaga: 2010′s Top Cover Girl

With five Grammy award nominations, a spot on Time’s 100 most influential people of the year list, and eight MTV Video Music Awards in the past 12 months, Lady Gaga had a wildly successful 2010. One more accolade that the “Fame Monster” can add to her resume is an undisputed spot atop the 2010 print throne. According to WWD, an Audit Bureau of Circulations report reveals that Gaga-centric issues sold better than any other celeb and the trend is not expected to slow down in 2011.

Lady Gaga’s July 8 Rolling Stone double issue sold 245,000 copies, nearly three times above the title’s January-September 2010 average. Gaga’s April 2010 Cosmopolitan was a major hit as well, selling 1.7 million copies and making its mark as the magazine’s leading issue through October. Lady Gaga was responsible for the year’s second most successful issue of Vanity Fair as her September cover sold 450,000 copies and trailed only Angelina Jolie’s cover. She also opened 2010 with a bang by appearing in the January issue of Elle, one which held up as their third highest seller through October.

Lunch at Michael’s: Wesley Clark & A Model Mystery

We missed Jane Fonda by a day. Today’s lunch crowd was lacking the star power we’ve come to expect on our weekly visits so while we were disappointed our usual perch at the bar had been usurped by an unidentified exec, we didn’t miss much from our less than stellar seat a few stools down. We were, though, happy to spot our pal Jack Kliger. Lunchtime chronicler Diane Clehane chatted up the Hachette honcho about the latest celebrity implosion that’s got everyone buzzing — the Rosie O’Donnell trainwreck that left the station at Monday’s Matrix Awards and crashed and burned with today’s surprise announcement that she is leaving The View in mid-June due to a reported contract dispute.

Kliger was among the stunned crowd of media elite that had to suffer through O’Donnell’s profane performance as emcee of the event that had her soon to be ex-boss Barbara Walters laying her face in her hands from her seat on the dais alongside such luminaries as Hillary Clinton and Arianna Huffington. “It was absolutely disgusting,” he said, adding that the editors from Woman’s Day and other Hachette books at his table were equally sickened by the comedian’s performance. The veteran magazine executive, who knows a thing or two about working with celebrities (remember George?), says it was O’Donnell’s ill-fated stint helming her own magazine was the “turning point” against launching further titles with stars moonlighting as editors. “We’ve learned that you can cover celebrities without giving celebrities their own magazine.” For every Oprah, says Kliger, there are scores of over-inflated egos and Hollywood headcases that are deluded into thinking they can run a magazine. “I was getting at least a proposal week,” he recalls of those days when O’Donnell was still masquerading as “The Queen of Nice.” Everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Jane Pauley(“she was talking to everyone”) was interested in adding the title of editor-in-chief to their resumes — with no personal investment, of course, he recalls. Long before the 2,000 attendees of Matrix witnessed what seemed like O’Donnell’s latest effort at career suicide, Kliger told fellow publishing bigwigs they were crazy to tie their bottom line to the star. “She’s a time bomb.” No kidding.

The rest of the crowd:
