More Changes at WOR; Clear Channel Names Program Director

Now that the talent pool has already been altered at WOR, it’s time to hire someone to oversee the daily operations. The Clear Channel news/talk station has hired Tom Cuddy as program director.

Cuddy, the one-time WPLJ PD, tells Radio Ink, “I’m beyond excited to be joining a News-Talk station that enjoys legendary status in New York. We have amazing plans to grow WOR and make it the hottest spot on the AM dial. WOR has one of the best signals on the east coast.”

There was no room at the inn for GM Jerry Crowley, who turns up in the same capacity at Salem’s WNYM and WMCA, according to Radio Ink.

Crowley had several decades of service at WOR, including 18 years as sales manager.

Clear Channel Layoffs Begin at WOR; David Paterson and Joy Browne Axed

It was only a matter of time at WOR. It’s the sense of radio insiders that staffers at the venerable news/talk station were on borrowed time since Clear Channel purchased the 710 frequency in August.

Now, FishbowlNY has learned that numerous changes have taken place at WOR, with others still possible, all within days of Christmas. Here’s what we know at this point. Midday host, Dr. Joy Browne is out. The psychologist spent 15 years dishing advice to callers on WOR.

Mike Huckabee‘s syndicated show has been dropped.

A source close to the information tells FishbowlNY that only scratches the surface.

“All local show promos are off… news department will be absorbed into Total Traffic. It’s a bloodbath there today.”

Part of that bloodbath, we’re told, is the dismissal of former New York Governor David Paterson. The unorthodox hire joined WOR for a weekday two-hour show, succeeding Steve Malzberg in September 2011.

Paterson’s spokesman confirmed the firing to FishbowlNY.

WOR Enhances Its Partnership With NBC News

Anyone tuning to WOR 710 recently thinking they’re hearing an influx of NBC-related programming would be right!

NBC News and WOR Radio have joined forces in a broadcasting partnership. NBC News will be the dominant provider of international and national news for the talk radio station.

As part of the arrangement, WOR will simulcast Meet the Press in its entirety every Sunday morning at 9.

Additionally, starting this week WOR began airing NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams live each day at 6:30 p.m.

WOR has already been using the NBC News Radio resources for several years to provide updates throughout the day. The signature NBC chimes will be played before each “NBC News Radio” update as well as the tagline “WOR powered by the world wide resources of NBC News.” Westwood One is official radio partner of NBC News.
