New York Post Restructures Sales Teams, Cuts Nine

The New York Post is restructuring its sales team, and as we all know, anytime the “r word” is mentioned, layoffs are never far behind. Capital New York reports that as a result of the moves, a total of nine Post staffers were let go from the paper’s marketing and promotions, ad sales, and tele-sales departments.

The changes, according to a memo from the Post’s publisher, Jesse Angelo, are designed to “modernize” the paper’s organization:

Accordingly, today sales marketing and digital ad operations are being moved directly into the sales department to create a more integrated team. This will also free up the rest of the marketing department to be completely focused on a bolstered consumer marketing effort. In addition, the feedback you all gave us during the past few weeks made clear that we need a less tiered sales structure. To that end, we are reconfiguring some managerial roles to flatten our organization. We are also adopting better results-based compensation policies.

As for those let go? Angelo wrote that “We are very appreciative of their efforts on behalf of the Post and in order to assist them with their transition, we have provided each of them with severance packages reflective of their years of service.”

New York Post Launches Tour Bus

The New York Post now operates a tour bus. Yes, we’re serious. For just $49, the paper’s bus will provide tourists with a 2 1/2-hour pun-filled tour that goes through Midtown, SoHo, Greenwich Village and lower Manhattan.

Just what will riders see? How about the The Plaza, which inspired this Post headline: “TRASHED! [Charlie] Sheen in coke and hooker fueled rampage at The Plaza.”

“Overall, I want it to be fun for people,” said the Post’s publisher, Jesse Angelo, in a statement. “That’s the whole point. Every tour on earth tells you about The Plaza. None of them tells you about Charlie Sheen.”

We’d say tours don’t tell people about Sheen because no one wants to hear about the idiot actor, but sadly enough, we know people do care. Enjoy, America!

New York Post’s First eBook is Written by Former Call Girl Ashely Dupré

You had to know that The New York Post would only enter into the eBook business if it could do so in a ridiculous way. Thankfully, the paper did not disappoint. The Post’s first eBook will be the pun-tastic Tricks of The Trade, written by Ashley Dupré, Eliot Spitzer’s favorite, um, writer.

Tricks of The Trade is a collection of the Post’s “Ask Ashley” columns, which are penned by Dupré. The advice is billed as “An honest guide to sex, love, lust, and healthy relationships.” We assume the Post is joking about the “healthy relationships” part, but you never know.

“Many of our readers have already embraced the Post’s digital products, and we believe this new venture into eBooks will prove very popular,” said Jesse Angelo, publisher of the Post, in a statement.

Tricks of The Trade ($5.99) is available for download from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Apple’s iBookstore, Google eBooks and more.

The Daily Drops a Third of Its Staff [Update]

The bad news for The Daily continues. According to All Things D, the digital newspaper is cutting 50 of its 170 employees, nearly a third of its staff. Apparently the hardest hit will be the the editorial and sports pages, which will still carry on after the lay offs, but with minimal content.

The cutbacks come on the heels of News Corp. announcing that it was putting The Daily on probation, so this probably isn’t a good sign for its future.

As for Jesse Angelo‘s comments that anyone saying The Daily is doomed is a “hater?” Well, we can only imagine what he’s going to say now.

UPDATE:
Check after the jump for a release about the cuts from The Daily.

The Daily’s Jesse Angelo Has No Time for Haters

Jesse Angelo, The Daily’s editor-in-chief, has heard all the chatter about his publication being put on probation for losing too much money. In a memo to staffers, Angelo says that everything is fine and anyone saying otherwise should be ignored:

Since before we launched, our dear friends at competing media outlets have done their best to wish us ill and gleefully ‘report’ on what they think is going on here. The truth is we have over 100,000 paying subs who are renewing their subscriptions at a 98% rate and fantastic advertisers who love our brand and keep coming back for more because they get results. Pay attention to them, not the haters.

Hopefully Angelo likes this “report” better than our previous “report,” but even if he doesn’t, we’re happy to see that he uses such hip words as “haters.” Even if it’s not 1998 anymore.

The Daily Launches iPhone App

It has been a little over a year since The Daily launched, and today it has grown a bit more: The digital newspaper finally has an iPhone app. Non-subscribers can view a few articles each day for free, subscribers (The Daily is $1.99 a month or $19.99 a year) can obviously view it all.

“With The Daily now available on iPhones, readers will have immediate access to original editorial and news content, right in their pockets,” said Jesse Angelo, Editor-in-Chief of The Daily. Greg Clayman, its Publisher, added, ”Being accessible to readers across all platforms has always been a top priority, and we’re looking forward to broadening our presence in the mobile space.”

The app itself isn’t that intriguing, but it does make sense for The Daily to offer this convenience to its subscribers.

He is an excellent journalist and a great guy and we’re thrilled to have him aboard.”

Calderone added, “The Daily, which hopes to build a national audience, has always had its sights set beyond the Manhattan media fishbowl.” We’re trying not to take that reference personally.

Steve Alperin Named Editor-At-Large At The Daily

Don’t let anyone tell you that News Corp.’s tablet newspaper The Daily isn’t shaking things up in an effort to grow its still relatively small subscriber base.

FishbowlNY has learned that Steve Alperin, currently The Daily’s managing editor for video, will be named Editor-At-Large today. In his new role Alperin will be tasked with rethinking The Daily’s video content, oversee new franchise development, create “tentpole” video programming and produce content based on the news.

“Having someone as experienced and forward-thinking as Steve taking on this newly-created role is a huge asset to The Daily,” said Daily Editor-in-Chief Jesse Angelo. “Not only has he been one of the forces behind The Daily from the very beginning, he has been involved in some of the best content we have made to date. He understands how to make great video and build a compelling framework for storytelling on a digital platform.”

Jesse Angelo Purchases Muppet Mansion

Jesse Angelo, Editor-in-Chief of The Daily, has purchased the famous “Muppet Mansion,” according to The New York Observer. The property is named that because it was home to the creator of the Muppets, Jim Henson, for many years.

How much did Angelo pay? About $23 million, or almost as much as The Daily’s budget, the Daily Intel smartly points out.

It sounds like a lot of money, so that got FishbowlNY thinking, what could have possibly persuaded Angelo to sign the deed? We investigated for two whole minutes and finally came up with an answer: Angelo is getting a Muppet in his likeness as part of the deal.

Totally worth it, if you ask us.

Daily Editor-In-Chief Jesse Angelo Implores Writers To Go Above And Beyond

In the near two weeks since News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch rolled out The Daily, everyone and their mother has offered up their opinion on the iPad-only newspaper. Whether you are a fan of The Daily or not, one thing that cannot be denied is that The Daily is not resting happily after their debut, in fact editor-in-chief Jesse Angelo has sent out an edict to his editorial department asking them to ramp up their level of reporting. Take a look at his full memo, courtesy of The Daily Intel, after the jump.

WWD Profiles Jesse Angelo

The Daily finally launched yesterday, and today there will be about 4,374 articles about it. WWD has one of them - a huge piece on The Daily’s Editor-in-Chief, Jesse Angelo, who just happens to be really good friends with James Murdoch. But nevermind that! The piece makes sure to point out how hard working Angelo was during his many years at the New York Post, and that he never looked like a rich kid:

‘He was this sort of gruff, archetypal tabloid editor,’ said former Postie and current Times reporter Tim Arango, reflecting on the first time he met Angelo at the Post’s watering hole, Langan’s. ‘He seemed like someone who has newspaper ink in his veins. He was smoking and all that. I had no idea about his background or anything, but he struck me as how I would have imagined the metro editor at the Post being like.’

Sounds good to us. Oh, and we need to mention this just because we loved reading it: Angelo’s mother co-wrote the theme song for Mr. Belvedere. Amazing.

Regardless of what Angelo (or his mom) has done before, he’s taking on a huge task with The Daily. Along with Angelo, the team behind the iPad paper is impressive, so they’ve got the talent. The only question is – will it work?

Rupert Murdoch Unveils iPad Newspaper ‘The Daily’ At the Guggenheim

Jon Miller, Eddie Cue, Rupert Murdoch, Jesse Angelo

This morning FishbowlNY ventured to the Guggenheim Museum on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, where News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch unveiled “The Daily,” the company’s long-awaited iPad newspaper.

Joining Murdoch on stage at the event were “Daily” editor Jesse Angelo, publisher Greg Clayman, News Corp. digital chief Jon Miller and Apple’s Eddie Cue.

We also spotted News Corp. COO Chase Carey and one of Murdoch’s sons, James Murdoch, in the crowd.

Playing around with “The Daily” you get a sense of just how much time, effort and money went into producing it. It looks slick, and the content is strong.

Murdoch says the company spent $30 million to develop it, and operational costs will run around $500,000 a week, as a result, he said the bar for “success” will be quite low.

As rumored, it will cost $0.99 a week, or $39.99 a year, with Apple’s new subscription billing system. You can try it out for free for two weeks starting today, with Verizon on board as the launch sponsor.

New Yorker Music Critic To Join News Corp.’s iPad Paper

Sasha Frere-Jones is adding some digital work to his already busy agenda. According to NYT.com’s David Carr, The New Yorker‘s music critic will become the culture editor of News Corp.’s yet-to-be released iPad newspaper, The Daily. Frere-Jones’s hiring has not been officially announced, however it has been confirmed by sources working with The Daily.

Frere-Jones has been a regular contributor to The New Yorker since 2004. He is best recognized for publishing “A Paler Shade of White,” a controversial column that addressed race in hip-hop and indie music. New Yorker editor David Remnick said Frere-Jones’s move is not uncommon and he expects the music expert to continue to contribute to his magazine:

“People who write here do all sorts of things — books, other writing — so he can do what he wants as long as the work here doesn’t suffer.”

Frere-Jones is the latest addition a Daily team that already has acquired Viacom’s Greg Clayman to lead business operations. Mike Nizza of AOL and The New York Times and former New York Post editor Jesse Angelo have also signed on with News Corp.’s project.

News. Corp plans to launch The Daily before the year is out. Not much other information has been revealed about the new digital paper, however Rupert Murdoch is believed to be directly involved in the venture.
