Last night, media bar Destination (co-owned by Dan Maccarone of Hard Candy Shell, which has redesigned major media sites from Gawker to Eater) hosted a book release party for This Is Why You’re Fat, a meme-to-book deal in the six figures co-written by Gawker videographer Richard Blakeley and Buzzfeed‘s Jessica Amason. The event was co-hosted by Obliterati, a monthly media party started by Nick McGlynn of Random Night Out after Blakeley discontinued his Media Meshing soirees last year.

Earlier in the day, Amason hosted a book release celebration of her own, asking dedicated foodies to travel between six food trucks around the city, order a special This Is Why You’re Fat-inspired culinary creation and post pictures of themselves eating it to Twitter. The event, dubbed the “Eat N Tweet Challenge,” kicked off at 11 a.m., and by the time we made our way to the Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream at 5th Ave and 23rd St. at 1 p.m., McGlynn had already claimed victory. His prize? A private party for 25 friends, catered by the food truck of his choice.

Going Viral On The Menu With BuzzFeed’s Amason

On the morning after the conclusion of mediabistro.com’s user-generated content focused conference UGCX, Matt Van Hoven of AgencySpy and guest host Joe Ciarallo of PRNewser welcomed BuzzFeed.com‘s viral media editor Jessica Amason to the Morning Media Menu podcast.

Following up on her presentation at UGCX on Tuesday, Amason talked about tracking the viral presence of Web articles in real time and making it work for advertisers.

The group also addressed some of the changes that traditional media companies are making in order to stay alive. Said Amason: “I think that testing the waters with new ideas about revenue and about advertising wouldn’t be a bad thing. I don’t exactly know what that would mean for them…but I think that thinking outside of CPM and the standard model certainly couldn’t hurt. They certainly could benefit from thinking in a social way.”

Amason also talked about her Tumblr blog This Is Why You’re Fat that has since developed into a book, available in stores next week. “When we launched it we thought it would be a pretty contagious idea,” she said. “We thought it might make an interesting book some day, but we didn’t think we would have a book deal within the first month because it really took off.”

Gawker’s Blakeley Arrested

blakeley.jpgIt took over a week for news to surface about Gawker video editor Richard Blakeley‘s arrest, but today Gawker and Blakeley himself confirmed that it is true.

Gawker says that Blakeley was arrested on domestic violence charges by ex-girlfriend Jessica Amason of BuzzFeed.com with whom he co-founded This Is Why You’re Fat and co-wrote the recent book derived from the site.

This blog has all the details, but Blakeley has denied the accusations on his Tumblr:

“Yes it’s true, I was arrested for assault. However the allegations against me are 100% not true. In cases of domestic abuse there’s an assumption not of innocence but of guilt so half of you won’t believe me. I hope we can put this behind us and move on with our lives as quickly as possible.”

Update: The New York County District Attorney’s office confirmed that Blakeley was arraigned on September 4 in criminal court on a misdemeanor charge. If convicted, he could face up to a year in jail. He is due back in court on November 4.

We’re obsessed with ThisisWhyYoureFat.com. We are. It’s like a watching a deep-fried bacon-infused lava lamp – mesmerizing.

Jessica Amason, Lead Blogger for AOL’s Urlesque.com and co-founder of the site ThisisWhyYoureFat.com sat down with us for a little Q&A.

FBLA:Is this satire or food porn?

JA:It’s both really. Some of these items are horrifying, some are enticing and some (the best ones) have a little of both. The fact that these gnarly items are given the “food porn” treatment, i.e. simple design, image-heavy with little text, is a bit silly. We often call what we do: “junk-food porn.”

FBLA: When does the book come out?
