Pakistan Suspends License of Leading News Channel (NYT)
The Pakistani government on Friday suspended the broadcasting license of Geo News, a popular television channel, in a major escalation of Geo’s dispute with the country’s powerful Inter-Services Intelligence spy agency. WSJ Pakistan’s media regulator said it would temporarily take off the air the country’s largest news channel after it aired allegations that the spy agency was behind the shooting in April of the channel’s star anchor. Bloomberg The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority ordered the closure of Geo for two weeks and imposed a 10 million rupee fine, according to a statement. “The authority further decided that in case of repeated violation by the said licensee, proceedings for the revocation of the license shall be initiated,” according to the statement. Al Jazeera Geo stayed on the air for a few hours and reported the news of its own license being pulled along with a graphic showing the Geo News logo wrapped in chains before the signal was cut. Rights group Amnesty International described the ban as a “politically motivated attack on freedom of expression and the media.” BBC News Geo argues that it has already publicly apologized to the ISI for its coverage in the aftermath of the shooting of Hamid Mir, one of Pakistan’s best known TV presenters. He was hit six times in the abdomen and legs after his car was fired on by men on motorbikes as he was leaving Karachi airport on April 19. It remains unclear who fired the shots and no group has said it carried out the attack. In May, a group of PEMRA board members had tried to suspend Geo TV’s license on the same issue, but that decision was quickly “disowned” by the regulatory body.

The above is final print issue of Jet. The magazine, launched in 1951, is folding its print edition and going forward as an app, available June 30. Sort of a sad way for a magazine that was once so important and groundbreaking to go out.

NBC Secures Olympics Through 2032 (TVSpy)
NBCUniversal has acquired the rights to the Olympic Games through 2032. The new deal, valued at $7.65 billion, is the longest U.S. Olympic sports rights agreement in history. TVNewser NBC adds to the three Olympics it secured in an earlier deal: 2016 in Rio, 2018 in Pyeongchang and 2020 in Tokyo, with six more Summer and Winter Olympics through 2032, the host cities of which have not yet been selected. Adweek The deal comes as a major surprise on the week before the broadcast upfront presentations, as rival media outlets appeared to have been altogether unaware that negotiations were in the works. In fact, several sources confirmed that no other networks were so much as invited to bid for the package. This was by design, said IOC president Thomas Bach. Reuters The IOC did not approach ESPN, a network spokesman said, and neither were Fox nor CBS. The agreement includes media rights across broadcast television, cable TV, Internet and mobile platforms. NBC and rival networks have been stocking up on live sports content, which are popular with advertisers because large audiences watch in real-time and do not skip the TV commercials. Mashable NBC has become a player in the live sports industry in recent years, signing deals for the U.S. rights to the English Premier League, the National Hockey League and Sunday night NFL games. The Olympics are an expensive property, but NBC claims that it has been able to turn a profit on them. The price tag for the most recent deal is $1.4 billion more than the previous one.

HBO Classics Coming to Amazon Prime (LostRemote)
Amazon is continuing its streaming-TV push, partnering with HBO on a multi-year deal to exclusively bring classic HBO shows to Amazon Prime subscribers, the two companies announced Wednesday. Variety Terms of the deal were not disclosed; it covers only the U.S. Under the agreement, Amazon has exclusive SVOD rights for select HBO programming and will make the first wave of it available to Prime subscribers beginning May 21. That includes full seasons of The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, The Wire, Big Love, Deadwood, Eastbound & Down, Family Tree, Enlightened, Treme, early seasons of Boardwalk Empire and True Blood, as well as miniseries like Band of Brothers and John Adams. GigaOM Some of HBO’s newer shows will also be available, with a substantial delay: “Previous seasons of other HBO shows, such as Girls, The Newsroom and Veep will become available over the course of the multi-year agreement, approximately three years after airing on HBO.” In addition, Amazon said that it will add HBO Go to its recently launched streaming video box, Fire TV — “targeting a launch by year-end.” New York Post HBO’s coveted content has long been kept beyond reach of outside content bundles like Amazon and Netflix, and only available to subscribers. Amazon’s win will surely be viewed as a loss for Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, who still dominates the bundled streaming space, but who also recently announced a price increase for new subscribers. Amazon also increased its prices, but is also seeking to expand its customer base with Fire TV. THR Amazon Prime also has exclusive online-only subscription deals for PBS’ Downton Abbey and Mr. Selfridge, CBS’ Under The Dome and upcoming Halle Berry-headlined miniseries Extant as well as 24, Veronica Mars, Orphan Black, The Americans and Justified. But it has had less success with its own original series; neither Alpha House nor Betas has achieved the pop culture significance of Netflix’s Kevin Spacey drama House of Cards.

Mitzi Miller Named Ebony Editor-in-Chief

Johnson Publishing has named Mitzi Miller the new editor-in-chief of Ebony. Miller was most recently editor-in-chief of Jet, where she had been since 2011. Wendy Wilson, currently the managing editor of Jet, will assume the Miller’s duties.

“Mitzi is a gifted editor with tremendous energy and passion, and her strong editorial background will catapult the Ebony brand to greater heights,” said Desiree Rogers, CEO of Johnson Publishing, in a statement. “We are thrilled to have Mitzi in our JPC family and are excited to see the new direction she will bring to the magazine.”

Miller’s appointment is effective immediately.

Same Size, Different Look: Jet Magazine Unveils Full Makeover

We included a size reference in the headline because evidently that aspect of Jet magazine is a big deal to loyal readers. From a New York Times report by Tanzina Vega:

One thing that won’t change, however, is the magazine’s unusual size — 5⅛ inches by 7⅜ inches. [Johnson Publishing chief executive Desirée] Rogers said the magazine enlisted the opinions of focus groups around the country for ideas on the makeover. “The one thing we kept hearing was, ‘Don’t change my size,’ ” she said.

The revamped August 12 Jet issue (pictured) comes on the heels of a very successful 2012 online revamp of sister publication Ebony. That followed a print redesign and in the wake of those separate changes, traffic at ebony.com has increased six-fold since July of last year.

Jet Wants News Stories About The Black Community

Since launching in 1951, Jet has sought out to be the authority on breaking information in the black community — but this is not your mama’s Jet. Freelancers who fail to do their journalistic due diligence will be swiftly sniffed out.

“If you just send me whatever and it’s not very well thought-out and it makes no sense for my magazine, you’re wasting my time. And I remember that,” says editor-in-chief Mitzi Miller. “A lot of things have changed recently with Jet in terms of our tone and the type of stories that we’re now covering, and I can tell when writers have truly been paying attention and when they’re just like, ‘Oh, I remember when my mom used to read Jet.’”

Since pitching is your one opportunity to make an impression, get to the point of the story succinctly and swiftly, advises Miller. ”Make it impossible for me to say no.”

J.P. Morgan Chase Buys ‘Substantial’ Stake in Ebony, Jet Publisher

J.P. Morgan Chase has purchased a large stake in Johnson Publishing, the company that published Ebony and Jet. Johnson Publishing’s CEO Desiree Rogers wouldn’t comment on how much Chase has invested; only describing it as “substantial.”

Rogers told Crain’s that Chase supports Johnson Publishing’s mission, which includes growing digitally (through partnerships with more vendors) and increasing marketing for Ebony and Jet.
