(VIDEO) Anchor Upheaval Reaction: WNYW Entertainment Reporter Jill Nicolini is ‘Not Sure Why’

Greg Kelly held court on his final morning at Good Day New York with Rosanna Scotto.

On Monday, Kelly’s star ascends to prime time. But it’s not all excitement for the NYPD commissioner’s son. A source with knowledge of the information tells FishbowlNY that “Greg is very unhappy with the Fox changes.” The source adds: “Obviously, there’s more to this story than meets the press.”

As we reported yesterday, Kelly’s alarm clock will no longer be needed, as he’ll anchor the 6 p.m. and co-anchor at 10.

Last night, FishbowlNY caught up with Good Day entertainment reporter Jill Nicolini (above) at an event on Long Island. She was delighted for her colleague, albeit, like the rest of us “outsiders,” was surprised by the rapid nature to yesterday’s news.

“Nobody knew about this,” Nicolini admits. “Everyone I’ve talked to so far doesn’t know anything. It’s been a shocker.”

Ernie Anastos Co-Anchors Annual Greek Parade on WWOR

The 74th annual New York Greek Parade is coming to WWOR/Channel 9 Sunday afternoon. Arguably, the city’s most famous Greek-American personality, WNYW/Channel 5 anchor Ernie Anastos, is co-hosting the live event on the Fox sister station. Anastos will be joined by Fox Business Network anchor Nicole Petallides.

Anastos’ Channel 5 colleague, and fellow Greek-Americans, meteorologist Nick Gregory and Jill Nicolini will provide live reports from along the parade route.

This year’s parade focuses on Greece’s 191st anniversary of independence. New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez – who is Cuban-American but enjoys Greek food — will serve as Grand Marshall.

More than 100,000 participants and spectators are expected to line Fifth Avenue Sunday afternoon. WWOR’s coverage runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

WNYW’s Julie Chang Handicaps American Idol Finalists

With WNYW/Channel 5 as the New York home to American Idol, membership has its privileges for entertainment reporter Julie Chang. In-season her focus is the “Idol Chatter” during the  10 p.m. newscast with Ernie Anastos and Dari Alexander. Chang had been handling entertainment fare on Good Day New York until recent personnel changes. Last year, Jill Nicolini was brought on board mornings from WPIX and Anne Craig left the station and the arts beat behind.

Chang just returned from Los Angeles after the Top 13 finalists were unveiled Thursday. She’ll return to the red carpet for the two-night finale in May.

FishbowlNY caught up with the busy, frequent flier for her take on season 11 of Idol, which remains the most popular show each week.

Among the group vying for the title are several singers with ties to the New York area: Elise Testone who grew up in Kinnelon, New Jersey; Jermaine Jones, who hails from Pine Hill, New Jersey; Jeremy Rosato was born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, although listed Valrico, Florida as his hometown on the show. Rounding on the local field is Flushing’s Heejun Han.

“In the last ten years, eight of the winners have come from the South,” Chang tells FishbowlNY. “I feel that this year we really have a strong shot at having a winner from the Big Apple.”

FishbowlNY: Year in Review

As we get ready to usher in 2012, let’s take one more look at the biggest broadcasting stories that FishbowlNY covered in 2011.

In January, Scott Clark closes out a brilliant career at WABC, retiring after nearly a quarter-century at Channel 7.

Maurice DuBois makes his debut as WCBS/Channel 2 lead anchor when he is promoted to nights opposite Kristine Johnson. Chris Wragge shifts his energy to The Early Show, but that wasn’t the last we would hear from him.

Also as 2011 began, veteran radio talk host Curtis Sliwa adds an afternoon shift to his Apple/WNYM duties.

In February, among the notable events, WNBC/Channel 4 welcomes home Shiba Russell from Boston. She was named weekend anchor with David Ushery. Russell fueled speculation that she was Sue Simmons’ “heir apparent,” as the main (if not exclusive) fill-in for the legendary anchor, who started at Channel 4 in 1980.

On the radio, Craig Allen, a veteran in his own right, agrees to a three-year extension as WCBS 880’s chief meteorologist. Two months later, Allen marked 30 years at the station.

Jill Nicolini Welcomed In Her WNYW/Channel 5 Debut

Fans of Jill Nicolini, wait no longer! The popular WPIX/Channel 11 morning personality, as previously reported, resurfaced today on WNYW/Channel 5′s Good Day New York.

In the waning minutes of the 8 a.m. hour, Nicolini made her first appearance on Channel 5.

“Do not adjust your sets,” Anchor Rosanna Scotto joked. “You’re not seeing things. We’re not melding stations.”

Scotto and Greg Kelly took two minutes to introduce her to the WNYW viewers.

Many wondered what Nicolini’s role at WNYW would be. Kelly, immediately, put an end to the speculation, saying that Julie Chang will handle entertainment on the evening newscasts with Ernie Anastos and Dari Alexander, thus, clearing the way for Nicolini.

“Now you get to play with us in the morning,” Scotto told Nicolini.

“I love you guys, I’ve always watched you,” Nicolini countered.

Traffic Reporter Jill Nicolini Leaves WPIX, Heads for WNYW

Jill Nicolini, the uber-popular traffic and entertainment reporter, has left WPIX/Channel 11. She did her final broadcast this morning.

“We made her a very competitive offer and asked her to stay,” WPIX news director Bill Carey says. “She’s leaving because she sees a path and opportunity to do more with her career beyond local news. This is the next step that will help her with that.”

For now, though, that career path takes Nicolini to WNYW/Channel 5 for Good Day New York. Insiders tell FishbowlNY that Nicolini will not work as a traffic reporter at WNYW.

The former model, actress, and reality show contestant joined WPIX in 2004.

“She’s very likable and very dependable,” Carey says. “She was a good part of our [morning] ensemble… We’re fond of her here. [Nicolini] leaves knowing she did a very good job for us.”
