Mental Floss’ Jim Kaminsky: ‘I Finally Found a Useful Outlet for That Kind of OCD Behavior’

Mental Floss, the magazine packed with information that can stump pretty much anyone you know, has a new guy tinkering under its hood. Jim Kaminsky is the title’s new Editor-in-Chief, and the first issue under his guidance hits newsstands tomorrow.

We got a chance to preview the issue, and from the looks of it, Kaminsky already has the magazine humming. Mental Floss’ Sept./Oct. issue is filled with entertaining and engrossing features that are sure to gain it new readers.

Kaminsky told FishbowlNY via email that when he came aboard, the magazine already had these things, he’s just been doing some fine tuning.

“The core idea of Mental Floss is so strong: the fantasy of a perfect liberal arts education between the pages of a magazine,” began Kaminsky. “The voice springs from that. It’s as though you’re hanging with your smartest and funniest pal, the one who wears geekiness on his sleeve, but is lovable and awesomely fun to be with. Will Pearson and Mangesh Hattikudur, the magazine’s founders, nurtured that voice over the course of a decade, so everything I’m doing with it is just an amplification of what was already there.”

Ok, so he was joking… Last night’s panel, from left: Maxim editorial director Jim Kaminsky, Details EIC Dan Peres, Playboy EIC Chris Napolitano, Elle executive editor Alexandra Postman, Glamour EIC Cindi Leive and Marie Claire EIC Joanna Coles

In what felt to many like an Ellies week amuse-bouche, 118 senior-level men’s and women’s magazine editors converged upon Twenty Four Fifth last night for mediabistro.com’s first-ever joint men’s and women’s magazine dinner, “Skirts, Slacks, and Supper.” Despite the fact that we were elbow-rubbing with the same people who by Friday we’ll be seeing in our bleary-eyed, blog-posting waking nightmares, spirited conversation quickly became the order of the evening, particularly in a post-meal panel featuring Details EIC Dan Peres, Maxim editorial director Jim Kaminsky, Playboy EIC Chris Napolitano, Elle executive editor Alexandra Postman, Glamour EIC Cindi Leive and Marie Claire EIC Joanna Coles.

Here are some choice bits from them on the differences between editing men’s and women’s mags, how their political coverage differs, the advent of celeb culture, and what the hell to do about the Internet…

Another Editor Leaves Men’s Journal

tfosterparadise.jpgFollowing Tom Foster‘s departure in January comes the latest exit at the “turbulent” world of Wenner Media, as relayed by MJ editor Jim Kaminsky:

Everyone:

It is with great regret that I’m announcing that James Lochart, Men’s Journal’s managing editor for the past year, has decided to leave his post on June 12, after the close of the August issue. James has been an invaluable part of this staff during its remarkably turbulent (and fun-filled!) past year, and in all has logged three years at Wenner Media.

On his own volition, James has decided the time is right to explore the bountiful world beyond Wenner. His unflappable demeanor, complete dedication and encyclopedic Mets knowledge will be missed.

James was kind enough to give me a long lead time to find a great replacement. Men’s Journal’s new Managing Editor is Brekke Fletcher. For the past two years she has been Managing Editor at Jane, and previously she held Managing Editor positions at Elle Girl, FHM, and Lucky. She is terrific and I feel fortunate to have her on board. She starts on June 6.

Please join me in thanking James for all of his great work, wishing him the best of luck and in welcoming Brekke. Enormous, blowout goodbye party tk.

JK
