On Friday, a grateful Globe returned the token of journalistic camaraderie and sent the Second City newsies doughnuts, Jim Romenesko reported.

“More than ever, we’ve been honored to be journalists these last weeks, helping our community understand and process the Boston Marathon bombings and related events — but, as you guessed, the experience left us exhausted emotionally and physically,” read a note signed by “your friends at the Boston Globe.” “Then your surprise lunch arrived, feeding out appetites and lifting our spirits.”

“Since you helped keep us going, let us return the favor,” they added.

Maybe the next step is to propose marriage under a new owner, since both papers are going up for sale.

In a memo obtained by Jim Romenesko, John Cook, editor of Gawker, said of Tiku, “She brings deep knowledge and extensive sources on the tech beat, and so will certainly be helping us deflate egos and mock stupidity and expose fraud in that arena. But she is a prodigiously talented reporter and merciless intellect, and will take on all manner of stories, long and fast, for us.”

“For a moment, forget about the writing,” wrote Doug Most, the Globe’s feature editor, in the note to staffers. “The superb, brilliant writing. Wesley’s presence in our world has been about so much more than just his wonderful film criticism and insightful takes on pop culture. Wesley is a true friend to so many of us.”

According to a Times memo obtained by Jim Romenesko, the feature grabbed 3.5 million page views, was shared over 10,000 times on Twitter, and at its peak (no pun intended), was visited by 22,000 people at once.

“The Times is a premiere online destination for news and information, but rarely have we been able to create a compelling destination outside the home page that was so engaging in such a short period of time on the Web,” wrote Jill Abramson, in the memo.

The long-lasting contract negotiations

According to a memo sent out by the Guild, Times staffers will stage a walk out at 3:35 pm, then hold a brief rally, where pro-union stickers will be distributed. Afterward staffers will return to their desks.

“It is long past time for the company and its negotiators to pay attention to what matters most of all to us,” reads the union memo, which was obtained by Jim Romenesko. “Together, we can make sure that happens. Join in, as beginning today, we will repeat our message until they hear it: Nothing less than fair wages and benefits.”

First of all, the title of the internal memo — sent to staffers by chief marketing officer Maryam Banikarim — is titled “Cool Balls.” It gets worse from there:

Actually, and perhaps with an air of creepiness, I DID have a dream about this very topic. I dreamt that people all over the place were talking about the images in USA Today’s balls.

“Affected employees are being notified effective today; however, certain positions will have a deferred termination date between now and the end of the year for various business reasons,” wrote Media General’s CEO, Marshall Morton, in the memo.

Jonah Lehrer

An editor’s note at the foot of his excellent New Yorker piece on brainstorming says some Noam Chomsky quotes within it ‘were not made directly to Jonah Lehrer’ and that ‘Chomsky and his colleague were interviewed by Peter Dizikes for his article in the November/December issue of Technology Review.’ Gulp.

Gulp indeed. As of now, the only comment from the New Yorker is from its web editor, Nicholas Thompson, who called the plagiarizing “a mistake.” A slew of Lehrer’s posts on his “Frontal Cortex” blog also have editors notes tacked onto them. But how long until Lehrer gets the axe? He can’t possibly keep his job after all this, can he?

Warren Buffett is going to buy more newspapers. Yes, in addition to the 63 his Berkshire Hathaway Media Group scooped up last week. In a letter sent to the editors and publishers of those publications, Buffett says he “will probably purchase more papers in the next few years.” While that’s not a concrete statement, Buffett is a big newspaper fan, so it’s going to happen.

Not only is Buffett going to buy more papers, in the memo — which was obtained by Jim Romenesko via The Omaha-World Herald — he even outlines where they’ll likely be found:

We will favor towns and cities with a strong sense of community, comparable to the 26 in which we will soon operate. If a citizenry cares little about its community, it will eventually care little about its newspaper. In a very general way, strong interest in community affairs varies inversely with population size and directly with the number of years a community’s population has been in residence. Therefore, we will focus on small and mid-sized papers in long-established communities.

If your town qualifies, get ready. Buffett, the Savior of Small Newspapers, is coming to save your beloved publication.

Unless he dies first. But even then, we bet he puts your little paper in his will. That’s just the kind of guy he is, and FishbowlNY loves him for it.
