The Boston Globe Returns the Favor, Sends Chicago Tribune Doughnuts

Last month, as the staff of The Boston Globe was working on overdrive to chronicle every foreseeable angle of the Boston bombing story, the Chicago Tribune sent them pizza and snacks.

On Friday, a grateful Globe returned the token of journalistic camaraderie and sent the Second City newsies doughnuts, Jim Romenesko reported.

“More than ever, we’ve been honored to be journalists these last weeks, helping our community understand and process the Boston Marathon bombings and related events — but, as you guessed, the experience left us exhausted emotionally and physically,” read a note signed by “your friends at the Boston Globe.” “Then your surprise lunch arrived, feeding out appetites and lifting our spirits.”

“Since you helped keep us going, let us return the favor,” they added.

Maybe the next step is to propose marriage under a new owner, since both papers are going up for sale.

Dear @bostonglobe: Will you go to prom with us?
WSJ Wants Someone to Cover CEOs

According to a memo, The Wall Street Journal is searching for a staffer to cover “executives, management and corporate leadership trend.” Sounds breathtaking.

Here’s another snippet from the note, obtained by Jim Romenesko:

The reporter must have at least four years of experience, deep sources within companies and work well across bureaus. The reporter will write section-front stories packed with insightful takes on the news and frequent, lively blog items.

Don’t everyone raise their hands at once, now.

Gawker Adds Senior Writer

Gawker has named Nitasha Tiku a senior writer. Tiku comes to the site from The New York Observer’s BetaBeat. She had been with the Observer for almost two years. Prior to her time there, Tiku contributed to New York’s Daily Intelligencer.

In a memo obtained by Jim Romenesko, John Cook, editor of Gawker, said of Tiku, “She brings deep knowledge and extensive sources on the tech beat, and so will certainly be helping us deflate egos and mock stupidity and expose fraud in that arena. But she is a prodigiously talented reporter and merciless intellect, and will take on all manner of stories, long and fast, for us.”

You can read Cook’s full note over at Romenesko’s site.

New York Times Buyout Deadline Hours Away, Joe Sexton Leaves [Update]

The next few days are going to be rough at the New York Times. Not only is the deadline for editors to accept buyouts today at 5 pm, Jill Abramson said in a memo that staffers will have to wait “a day or two after that” to know if there are going to be layoffs.

“If you think the buyout is something that works for you at this time in your life, we urge you to give the offer serious consideration if you haven’t already,” wrote Abramson, in the note obtained by Jim Romenesko. “Each buyout we record reduces the possibility of layoffs.” No pressure though!

In the meantime, two editors have decided to join the others who have accepted the Times’ offer.

Wesley Morris Leaves Boston Globe for Grantland

Morris has been with the Globe for the past 10 years. He had been a contributor to Grantland since 2011.

According to a memo obtained by Jim Romenesko, at Grantland he will continue to cover film and other pop culture subjects.

“For a moment, forget about the writing,” wrote Doug Most, the Globe’s feature editor, in the note to staffers. “The superb, brilliant writing. Wesley’s presence in our world has been about so much more than just his wonderful film criticism and insightful takes on pop culture. Wesley is a true friend to so many of us.”

New York Times’ ‘Snow Fall’ Piece is a Huge Hit

We loved The New York Times’ amazing “Snow Fall” piece, written by John Branch. It turns out a lot of other people did, too.

According to a Times memo obtained by Jim Romenesko, the feature grabbed 3.5 million page views, was shared over 10,000 times on Twitter, and at its peak (no pun intended), was visited by 22,000 people at once.

“The Times is a premiere online destination for news and information, but rarely have we been able to create a compelling destination outside the home page that was so engaging in such a short period of time on the Web,” wrote Jill Abramson, in the memo.

The Best Wizard of Oz Synopsis Ever Written

The above synopsis of The Wizard of Oz was written by Rick Polito in 1998, when he was a journalist for the Marin Independent Journal. The picture just went viral when someone posted it on Reddit.

Polito tells Jim Romenesko that he is doing some freelancing, but is otherwise an “unemployed dad.”

According to a memo sent out by the Guild, Times staffers will stage a walk out at 3:35 pm, then hold a brief rally, where pro-union stickers will be distributed. Afterward staffers will return to their desks.

“It is long past time for the company and its negotiators to pay attention to what matters most of all to us,” reads the union memo, which was obtained by Jim Romenesko. “Together, we can make sure that happens.
USA Today Says Its Logo is ‘Cool’

As we’ve mentioned, the new USA Today logo is sort of odd. In a memo obtained by Jim Romenesko, Sam Ward — the artist behind the new look — explains the update. Sadly, he doesn’t do himself or USA Today any favors.

First of all, the title of the internal memo — sent to staffers by chief marketing officer Maryam Banikarim — is titled “Cool Balls.” It gets worse from there:

I have a dream . . . that one day all Americans will join hands and declare their undying love for our balls; our spheres of influence, our behaviors, or whatever one chooses to call them.

Actually, and perhaps with an air of creepiness, I DID have a dream about this very topic. I dreamt that people all over the place were talking about the images in USA Today’s balls.

That’s the beginning. Ward’s note goes on:

Jonah Lehrer’s Situation Gets Worse [Update]

Jonah Lehrer, formerly of Wired and recently hired by The New Yorker, is in serious trouble. Jim Romenesko pointed out that Lehrer lifted parts of a New Yorker piece from one he wrote for The Wall Street Journal, and the situation has snowballed since then. New York’s Daily Intel noted several other instances of Lehrer plagiarizing himself and now Edward Champion explains that Lehrer recycled material for his book, Imagine. Poynter also found that he lifted quotes from a story written by someone else:

An editor’s note at the foot of his excellent New Yorker piece on brainstorming says some Noam Chomsky quotes within it ‘were not made directly to Jonah Lehrer’ and that ‘Chomsky and his colleague were interviewed by Peter Dizikes for his article in the November/December issue of Technology Review.’ Gulp.

Gulp indeed. As of now, the only comment from the New Yorker is from its web editor, Nicholas Thompson, who called the plagiarizing “a mistake.” A slew of Lehrer’s posts on his “Frontal Cortex” blog also have editors notes tacked onto them. But how long until Lehrer gets the axe? He can’t possibly keep his job after all this, can he?

Cohen comes to the Times from Duke University, where she served as Knight Professor of the Practice of Journalism and Public Policy since 2009.

Prior to her time at Duke, Cohen was a veteran of The Washington Post, where she won the Pulizter for Investigative Reporting.

According to a Times memo, the addition of Cohen will be well received:

Sarah comes highly recommended by … about half the newsroom, with rave reviews from everyone in our CAR cluster, and from Aron Pilhofer, Jo Becker and former colleagues at other organizations. Several people threatened to kill us unless we hired her.

Cohen begins August 1.

Warren Buffett Won’t Stop Buying Newspapers Until He’s Dead

Warren Buffett is going to buy more newspapers. Yes, in addition to the 63 his Berkshire Hathaway Media Group scooped up last week. In a letter sent to the editors and publishers of those publications, Buffett says he “will probably purchase more papers in the next few years.” While that’s not a concrete statement, Buffett is a big newspaper fan, so it’s going to happen.

Not only is Buffett going to buy more papers, in the memo — <del>which was obtained by Jim Romenesko </del>via The Omaha-World Herald — he even outlines where they’ll likely be found:

We will favor towns and cities with a strong sense of community, comparable to the 26 in which we will soon operate. If a citizenry cares little about its community, it will eventually care little about its newspaper. In a very general way, strong interest in community affairs varies inversely with population size and directly with the number of years a community’s population has been in residence. Therefore, we will focus on small and mid-sized papers in long-established communities.

If your town qualifies, get ready. Buffett, the Savior of Small Newspapers, is coming to save your beloved publication.

Unless he dies first. But even then, we bet he puts your little paper in his will. That’s just the kind of guy he is, and FishbowlNY loves him for it.

Nick Denton Addresses Gawker Media Changes

This afternoon Nick Denton sent Gawker Media staffers a memo outlining some managerial and advertising changes. Nothing major was announced, but here are some highlights via Jim Romenesko, who obtained the memo.

“We are creating a new content department within sales to be headed by Ray [Wert]. It will encompass the existing creative services team and several additional functions: primarily branded content, marketing communications and events. Ray is the first editor to move to sales.”

“The days of the banner advertisement are numbered. In two years, our primary offering to marketers will be our discussion platform. Expanding on our existing sponsored post program, Ray’s team will recruit and identify a client’s spokespeople and advocates, advise them on web etiquette and language, and help make their most persuasive case.”

“The second main growth area for Gawker Media is content-driven commerce, ranging from affiliate marketing to in-page transactions. A historical tidbit: the original business model for Gizmodo was affiliate fees from purchases of gadgets through Amazon. We didn’t have the scale then to make that work. We do now.”

For the full memo, click through to Romenesko’s site.
