Pakistan Suspends License of Leading News Channel (NYT)
The Pakistani government on Friday suspended the broadcasting license of Geo News, a popular television channel, in a major escalation of Geo’s dispute with the country’s powerful Inter-Services Intelligence spy agency. WSJ Pakistan’s media regulator said it would temporarily take off the air the country’s largest news channel after it aired allegations that the spy agency was behind the shooting in April of the channel’s star anchor. Bloomberg The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority ordered the closure of Geo for two weeks and imposed a 10 million rupee fine, according to a statement. “The authority further decided that in case of repeated violation by the said licensee, proceedings for the revocation of the license shall be initiated,” according to the statement. Al Jazeera Geo stayed on the air for a few hours and reported the news of its own license being pulled along with a graphic showing the Geo News logo wrapped in chains before the signal was cut. Rights group Amnesty International described the ban as a “politically motivated attack on freedom of expression and the media.” BBC News Geo argues that it has already publicly apologized to the ISI for its coverage in the aftermath of the shooting of Hamid Mir, one of Pakistan’s best known TV presenters. He was hit six times in the abdomen and legs after his car was fired on by men on motorbikes as he was leaving Karachi airport on April 19. It remains unclear who fired the shots and no group has said it carried out the attack. In May, a group of PEMRA board members had tried to suspend Geo TV’s license on the same issue, but that decision was quickly “disowned” by the regulatory body.

A Thank You Note for Jimmy Fallon

Thank you… for making The Tonight Show monologue your own.

JimmyFallonPic

Three months ago, when you took over the NBC late night franchise, many wondered how you would deal with the heavy burden of following the Jay Leno and Johnny Carson monologue format. The solution, as you have shown, was to sidestep their version of the news in favor of a broader, goofier and slightly shorter rundown.

Your populist approach begins each night with the refrain, “Here’s what people are talking about.” Cleverly, that leads you to talk about everything under the one-liner sun. Not just politicians, pundits and Presidents but also YouTube videos, last night’s TV programs and more. It’s an approach that basically combines the best of Leno and Kimmel.

Former NBC News president Steve Capus is joining CBS News as the executive producer of CBS Evening News With Scott Pelley and executive editor of the news division. He will begin in his new role in July. Capital New York Capus is no stranger to the evening news beat. He served four years as executive producer of the NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams before taking over NBC’s news division in 2005. Capus is currently an “executive in residence” at IESE Business School at the University of Navarra, a role he will continue in after he joins CBS. HuffPost / AP Capus left NBC in 2013 after eight years as president of the news division, part of a turnover triggered by troubles at the Today show. He was Tom Brokaw’s last executive producer at NBC’s Nightly News and is close to Williams, whom he will now compete with each night. Capus will also have broader responsibilities as executive editor of CBS News, behind chairman Jeff Fager and president David Rhodes. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media His appointment has raised internal speculation that he’s in line to succeed Rhodes, perhaps as early as next year. Several CBS News sources believe that Les Moonves, the chairman and CEO of CBS Corp., tapped Capus in order to position him for that role. THR Rhodes and Capus have been in discussions for several months with more specific talks about the Evening News role evolving over the last few weeks. The broadcast has been on a rating uptick since Pelley took over; notching a gain of 6 percent so far this season among total viewers. But it is still stuck in third behind Nightly News and ABC World News With Diane Sawyer.

Fallon’s First Month: 120M+ Social Media Impressions

RelishMIXLogoForget Nielsen. The company that matters when it comes to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is the one called RelishMIX.

Per a report by AP television writer David Bauder, Fallon is not just topping the other Jimmy in traditional metrics, but also in the all-important social media counted sphere:

During his first month, Fallon generated more than 120 million YouTube views, Twitter mentions and Facebook posts, the research firm RelishMIX said. That’s more than double Kimmel, who had 57 million in the same social media metric. Letterman had 2.3 million.

A Sure Thing: Ellen DeGeneres and Oscar Prop Bets

The only problem with Jimmy Kimmel‘s brilliant proposal last night is that Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres is in absolutely no need of extra cash. But if she were, she might definitely take up her ABC-TV Academy Awards broadcast mate on his crafty idea.

Kimmel told Ellen she is in the perfect position to bet, through an anonymous middleman like Guillermo, on prop wagers like these:

  • Will Ellen wear a dress during the show?
  • What will be the color of the first suit Ellen wears on stage?
  • Will Pink and Bette Midler perform a duet?

Kimmel Follows Fiery Twerk with Sochi Wolf

Score one for Inside Edition. The syndicated news magazine is being credited with spoiling, by a few hours, talk show host Jimmy Kimmel‘s newest fake-viral-video prank.

From a write-up by Kansas City Star reporter Lisa Gutierrez:

Inside Edition reports that a video shot by American luger Kate Hansen of a “wolf” prowling the halls outside of her Sochi bedroom was a prank.

Kimmel, Damon Log Another Tense Late Night Chapter

As one early YouTube commenter so rightly notes, “OMG, this does not get old!” It also risks upstaging, not by accident, Jay Leno‘s NBC Tonight Show farewell with Billy Crystal and Garth Brooks. Kimmel, called out by Leno in several recent interviews, has not just Matt Damon tonight but also George Clooney, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, John Goodman and Bob Balaban!

Per the teaser clip above, Kimmel relegates his least favorite The Monuments Men star to a stage-left improvised seating arrangement. One that is brought out after the exasperated host tells Guillermo, “Will you get this baby his chair?”

Kimmel Twerk-Prank Makes This Freelance Writer Look Like a Genius

It’s the media stunt being heard around the world this morning. Everyone from Mediaite to Salon to the New York Daily News is applauding Jimmy Kimmel for choreographing a fake viral “twerk fail” video with the help of Hollywood stuntwoman Daphne Avalon.

But we want to shine a light on another LA lady – Desi Jedeikin (pictured). This freelance writer was among those who smelled something fishy and posted a solid piece on Smosh to that effect last week titled “7 Reasons Why the ‘Worst Twerk Fail EVER’ is Fake.” Jedeikin asked questions like this:

Why Wasn’t the Music Loud from the Start?: I’ll tell you why. Because the music being turned up was probably a signal to her accomplice. BOOM. Watch out Sherlock. There’s a new master sleuth in town!…

Tony Ortega Puts the Skids on Tom Cruise TMZ Item

Here’s a suggestion for TMZ. When the next need-for-verification Church of Scientology-tinged item comes along, like this Friday afternoon EXCLUSIVE speculating that a pair of wee-hour motorcycle riders were Tom Cruise and girlfriend, check with Tony Ortega first.

The former Village Voice editor-in-chief works tirelessly at the helm of his must-read Scientology blog The Underground Bunker. No one knows more about CoS celebrity members past, present and near future-than this guy. If TMZ had checked with Ortega, they could have easily avoided this Saturday morning admonition:

This isn’t the first time that ex-Scientologist Tiziano Lugli has been mistaken for Tom Cruise zipping around Hollywood on his Ducati motorcycle.

But TMZ? You’d think Harvey Levin’s outfit would want a bit more confirmation before deciding that a video of Tiziano and his wife Jamie is Tom Cruise and his “Rebound Chick.”
