<title>Anna Wintour Admits Glorifying Mass Murderers Isn&#8217;t a Good Idea</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p><em><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-61887" title="Screen Shot 2012-06-11 at 1.27.09 PM" src="http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/files/2012/06/Screen-Shot-2012-06-11-at-1.27.09-PM.png" alt="" width="184" height="252" />Vogue</em> has been widely criticized for its puff piece on <strong>Asma al-Assad</strong>, the wife of Syrian president <strong>Bashar al-Assad</strong> since it ran, but not much has come of it.<em> Vogue</em> zapped the article, &#8220;<a href="http://www.vogue.com/404/">A Rose in The Desert</a>,&#8221; from the web, and the article&#8217;s editor, <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Chris-Knutsen-profile.html">Chris Knutsen</a></strong>, defended it, <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2011/02/vogue-defends-profile-of-syrian-first-lady/71764/">telling <em>The Atlantic</em></a> the piece was &#8220;a balanced view of the first lady and her self-defined role as Syria&#8217;s cultural ambassador.&#8221;</p>
<p>According to <em>The New York Times</em>, the article&#8217;s author, <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Joan-Juliet-Buck-profile.html">Joan Juliet Buck</a></strong>, also began speaking out against the Assad regime after it was published. But it took until now to hear from <em>Vogue&#8217;</em>s big gun, <strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/Anna-Wintour-profile.html">Anna Wintour</a></strong>.</p>
<p>Wintour issued the following statement about &#8220;A Rose in The Desert&#8221; <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/11/world/middleeast/syrian-conflict-cracks-carefully-polished-image-of-assad.html?_r=2&amp;pagewanted=all">to the <em>Times</em></a>:</p>
