Vogue zapped the article, “A Rose in The Desert,” from the web, and the article’s editor, Chris Knutsen, defended it, telling The Atlantic the piece was “a balanced view of the first lady and her self-defined role as Syria’s cultural ambassador.”

According to The New York Times, the article’s author, Joan Juliet Buck, also began speaking out against the Assad regime after it was published. But it took until now to hear from Vogue’s big gun, Anna Wintour.

Wintour issued the following statement about “A Rose in The Desert” to the Times:
