Time Celebrates 90 Years

Time turns 90 this week. To celebrate, the magazine has a slew of offerings, including a slideshow/history lesson as taught by Time, an interactive cover feature (tweet your favorite and it’ll show up here) and some birthday advice from Joel Stein.

“For me, 90 is not so much a milestone but evidence that for nine decades Time is always new, always of the moment,” Rick Stengel, managing editor of Time, writes in this week’s issue. “We have to be because we cover the way the world is changing and that never stops.”

National Magazine Award Finalists Unveiled

More awards! The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) has unveiled the 2012 National Magazine Award finalists, and leading the way are two fantastic titles — New York and The New Yorker — each nominated for six Ellies. Time: Joel Stein tries to show up Sarah Palin by writing a quickie memoir with the help of ghostwriter Neil Strauss. “We both figured it was going to take a lot of searching to find anything interesting about my life, but within half an hour I was unabashedly thrilled by my own adventures,” Stein writes. “Far stranger, Strauss was too. In addition to superfast writing and the ability to mimic other people’s voices, his artistic gift is that he finds everything interesting.”

Time.com Relaunches: Podcasts, Archives, Video, Oh My

FBNY stopped by the Time offices last week to get a quick preview of the site — did you know that Time‘s archives, dating all the way back to 1923, are available online?! Us either.

Covering Fashion Week: You’ve Got the Look, and the Blog, and the Twitter

fashion-week.jpgSo, we just remembered it’s Fashion Week here in New York. What a relief after all this “Palinating.” No need to go to the tents even, since it appears everyone seems to have everything covered from every angle possible. As per usual, NYMag’s got the Fug Girls on the case, along with videos by Jeremy Kost, Fashionista is blogging the tents, refinery29 is, as usual, giving Style.com a run for its money. And on the new, new media front not only is FBNY twittering from the tents, UnBeige is also stylin‘, so to speak, as is Racked.com is twittering.

Also, let us draw your attention to the trio Time.com has managed to dispatch to the shows: Joel Stein, fashion scribe Kate Betts, and renaissance man Isaac Mizrahi (anyone with even a shred of interest in fashion who hasn’t already done so should immediately netflix Unzipped). Per Stein:

Killing Time In New York

  • Editor Richard Stengel tells Hagan he wants Time to be a bit more like the Economist. Time Inc. editor-in-chief John Huey does not: “Well, that’s not the magazine we’re making. To say that we’re going down that road is not where we’re going.” Stengel later amends his description.

  • Stengel calls new Time columnist Joel Stein “a god to people in their twenties and thirties.”

    Joel Stein Compares Self To Tom Hanks, Phillip Roth, Doesn’t Want Readers To E-Mail Him

    stein_poy.jpgWe’ll just let columnist Joel Stein — he of Time magazine, SecondLife and VH1′s I Love The Whatever fame — explain himself:

    DON’T E-MAIL me.

    That address on the bottom of this column? That is the pathetic, confused death knell of the once-proud newspaper industry, and I want nothing to do with it. Sending an e-mail to that address is about as useful as sending your study group report about Iraq to the president.

    Here’s what my Internet-fearing editors have failed to understand: I don’t want to talk to you; I want to talk at you. A column is not my attempt to engage in a conversation with you. I have more than enough people to converse with. And I don’t listen to them either. That sound on the phone, Mom, is me typing.

    Some newspapers even list the phone numbers of their reporters at the end of their articles. That’s a smart use of their employees’ time. Why not just save a step and have them set up a folding table at a senior citizen center with a sign asking for complaints?

    Where does this end? Does Philip Roth have to put his e-mail at the end of his book? Does Tom Hanks have to hold up a sign with his e-mail at the end of his movie?

    Only one problem with Mr. Stein’s anti-Web 2.0 monologue: he lists his e-mail address — thejoelstein@yahoo.com — on his personal Web site.

    So, go ahead. Send him your thoughts. Or send ‘em to us — we love e-mail.
