Sharyl Attkisson Resigns From CBS News (Politico / Dylan Byers on Media)
CBS News investigative correspondent Sharyl Attkisson has reached an agreement to resign from CBS News ahead of contract, bringing an end to months of hard-fought negotiations, sources said. Attkisson, who has been with CBS News for two decades, had grown frustrated with what she saw as the network’s liberal bias, an outsized influence by the network’s corporate partners and a lack of dedication to investigative reporting, several sources said. She increasingly felt like her work was no longer supported and that it was a struggle to get her reporting on air. The Washington Post / Erik Wemple Rumors of Attkisson’s stormy relations with her superiors at CBS News have made the rounds for months. In conversations from last year, CBS News sources said that Attkisson was frustrated that more of her reporting on Benghazi and other investigative pieces didn’t make The CBS Evening News with greater frequency. HuffPost The Emmy-winning reporter also made headlines in 2013 after CBS News confirmed that her computers had been hacked. Attkisson had suggested that “there could be some relationship” between the suspicious activity and the government’s probes into the Associated Press and Fox News’ James Rosen. The Department of Justice denied that possibility, and the network also addressed it in a statement in August, saying, “To be clear, the federal government has not been accused in the intrusion of Attkisson’s computer; CBS News is continuing to work to identify the responsible party.” The Washington Times Attkisson began negotiating with CBS News president David Rhodes as early as last April about getting out of her contract. She announced her resignation to her 41,000 Twitter followers Monday with the simple message: “I have resigned from CBS.” TVNewser Attkisson, a Washington-based investigative correspondent, called her time at CBS News “one of life’s great privileges” and said she is “grateful for the many opportunities I’ve had.”

Gawker’s John Cook Leaves for First Look Media

GawkerJohn Cook, editor of Gawker, is leaving the site to join Pierre Omidyar’s First Look Media. Recode reports that Max Read will succeed Cook.

Other First Look hires include The Guardian’Glenn Greenwald and Matt Taibbi, formerly of Rolling Stone.

Cook had been with Gawker since 2009.

Gawker’s John Cook: ‘I Think of Media Ethics the Same Way I Think of Plumber Ethics’

The journalist who crowdfunded $200,000 to try and break the story of a Toronto mayor’s alleged crack use wide open is back in that Canadian city. Tonight, Gawker editor-in-chief John Cook will chat with Jeffrey Dvorkin, director of the journalism program at the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus, as sponsored by the Canadian Journalism Foundation.

Ahead of the event, Cook spoke with Toronto Globe & Mail media reporter Simon Houpt about this and that. FishbowlNY got a particular kick out of Cook’s answer to the question, “What do you think of media ethics?”:

“I think of media ethics the same way I think of plumber ethics: I think that, as a human being, I’m bound by certain ethical precepts I try to live my life by, but I do not think as a profession that reporters and editors need to think of themselves as bound by an additional, secondary set of ethical restrictions – the way that, say, lawyers or doctors think of themselves as bound by an additional set of conditions.”

Gawker Calls Its Own Sponsored Content ‘Straight-Up Garbage’

No one likes sponsored advertising, but it is apparently here to stay. So it’s nice to see Gawker — which posts plenty of advertorial content — acknowledge how awful it is. Here is Tom Scocca — managing editor of the site — on its own sponsored content:

The ad that doesn’t feel like an ad—this is the grail right now, for everyone, Gawker Media very much included. So we get the occasional humiliating advertorial post, with straight-up garbage dressed to resemble actual content, through which the advertiser (or the publication) tells the reader, ‘We think you are stupid, and we have bad taste.’

Well said.

Scocca also called out another post, in which John Cook was irrationally upset about adults using wipes instead of toilet paper. Cottonelle’s parent company — Kimberly-Clark — noticed the post and paid Gawker to promote it. The result is that readers saw the post once, and then again, because ”the toilet-paper company wanted you to see the name of the toilet-paper company.”

We love that Scocca wrote this about sponsored content, but sort of disagree about how bad it is. To us, advertorials are becoming just like any other ad: We ignore them all completely. If this is how media companies have to make money, then so be it. It sucks, but you know, there are worse things in life. Like Bruno Mars.

Gawker Post Reaming Rupert Murdoch’s Mostly-White Team Ignites Race Debate

When Gawker’s John Cook noticed a grainy photo of Rupert Murdoch “hanging with the Dow Jones team” on the News Corporation CEO’s Tumblr, he proposed to his readers a game.

But Gawker’s fierce commenters turned the gun on Nick Denton‘s flagship site.

“Gawker media is not exactly a Rainbow,” wrote one under the nom-de-commentaire, birthdeath. “Pot, meet kettle.”

“No, not a rainbow. But for what it’s worth and since you asked, 1/3 of our masthead (at this site, not company-wide) is not white,” Cook replied.

Wrote another commenter: “I’m sure the difficulty in having more people of color at sites like Buzzfeed and Gawker is that they only want to pay people under 40,000 a year….and they want them to live in NYC and be super trendy etc. So who can afford to live like that? Trust-fund, predominately white, babies of course. See: Lena Dunham’s character in ‘Girls.’”

Gawker’s John Cook Guts McKay Coppins’ BuzzFeed Story on Marco Rubio

McKay Coppins, BuzzFeed’s political editor, is no stranger to haters among his New York media compatriots.

In January, the bespectacled politics wonk drew ire from Complex’s Foster Kamer and Reuters social media editor Anthony De Rosa over a story hedging their apparent-newfound love of guns on a photo from a shooting range.

Now, he’s in Gawker editor John Cook‘s crosshairs over a story that seems to have a similarly flimsy premise.

Entitled “The Endless Vetting of Marco Rubio,” Coppins’ post details weaved into the 555 pages of a Democratic opposition research firms book on the Republican Party’s rising star from Florida. The question he’s left with: “What element of his time in Florida politics will come back to haunt him?”

“Hmmm, yes, what element, exactly? Well, Coppins doesn’t quite say,” Cook wrote with that biting tone Gawker usually saves for Politi — er, “The Politico.”

Gawker Adds Senior Writer

Gawker has named Nitasha Tiku a senior writer. Tiku comes to the site from The New York Observer’s BetaBeat. She had been with the Observer for almost two years. Prior to her time there, Tiku contributed to New York’s Daily Intelligencer.

In a memo obtained by Jim Romenesko, John Cook, editor of Gawker, said of Tiku, “She brings deep knowledge and extensive sources on the tech beat, and so will certainly be helping us deflate egos and mock stupidity and expose fraud in that arena. But she is a prodigiously talented reporter and merciless intellect, and will take on all manner of stories, long and fast, for us.”

Ex-Gawker EIC A.J. Daulerio to Consult for BuzzMedia

It was just a few months ago that A.J. Daulerio vacated the EIC position at Gawker and was replaced by John Cook. This week comes word that Daulerio will soon be taking on a high-level three-month consulting gig with BuzzMedia. The move was announced Wednesday on the west coast and again last night at an all-hands NYC BuzzMedia  meeting.

Our sources tell us Daulerio will work closely with executive vice president of programming Mike Porath to devise a cohesive new battle plan for the company’s portfolio of websites. BuzzMedia currently operates a staggering 40+ different Web properties.

Porath has an impressive background. Before joining BuzzMedia, he was the editor-in-chief of AOL News as well as an ABC News-pioneering overseas digital reporter, working out of Kosovo.

Deadspin and Gawker Switch Managing Editors

Deadspin and Gawker have swapped managing editors. Deadspin’s managing editor, Tom Scocca, is going to Gawker; while Emma Carmichael returns to Deadspin.

As noted by Deadspin, Scocca will not take on the role of deputy editor at Gawker, reporting to new editor-in-chief, John Cook.

A.J. Daulerio Steps Aside as Editor of Gawker, John Cook Takes Over

The A.J. Daulerio Gawker era is coming to a close. According to New York’s Daily Intelligencer, Daulerio is stepping down as editor-in-chief of Gawker, and John Cook is succeeding him.

“John Cook is the most experienced reporter on the team, a surprisingly powerful opinion writer and a gossip of the most refined kind,” wrote Nick Denton, in a memo. “He has natural authority. John will preserve the crew and build on the success of 2012. I’m grateful to AJ for leaving Gawker in such great shape and I can’t wait to see what John and his colleagues will do in 2013. Roger Ailes’ excitement may be more muted.”
