The King Eddy farewell train continues tonight. Dan Fante, the son of legendary LA novelist John Fante, will be headlining a reading at the Downtown dive tonight at 8. Fante the younger will be reading bits from his memoir Fante: A Family’s Legacy of Writing, Drinking and Surviving.
King Eddy’s was a favorite spot of Fante the senior. The underground speakeasy beneath the bar is the spot where Fante’s famous character Arturo Bandini drank the wages away in Ask the Dusk.
The bar under its current ownership will be closing for good this summer. If you’ve never been, and need an excuse to check out the last true Downtown dive bar before it’s gone forever, tonight is as good a time as any.
