Last night, New York public radio station WNYC threw a gala at Gotham Hall to celebrate its recent acquisition of New York’s classical radio station WQXR and honor its former owner, The New York Times Co.

Hosted by Alec Baldwin, the evening featured performances by folksinger Judy Collins and opera diva Deborah Voigt. David Sanger, a New York Times correspondent and host of the “Washington Report” on WQXR — and grandson of the station’s founder Elliott Sanger — presented the Times Co. with an award, accepted by Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr., commemorating the company’s stewardship of WQXR since 1944.

Later, Baldwin announced that the winner of the evening’s raffle would get a radio — actually, an Internet radio tuned to WQXR. “The New York Times got a piece of glass, for the millions and millions of dollars they’ve coughed up,” he said. “A piece of glass. The winner of the raffle gets a radio.”

The New York Times‘ David Carr stole the show at last night’s Intelligence Squared debate on the merits of the mainstream media, when he pulled out a print out of fellow debater Michael Wolff‘s Web site Newser all full of holes. Carr had cut out every story on Newser that came from the main stream media to prove his point: new media couldn’t exist without venerable mainstream pubs like the Times.

Ultimately, Carr’s side — debating against the proposition “Good Riddance to the Main Stream Media” — won the night, with 68 percent of the audience agreeing that we should not, in fact, say good riddance to the MSM. But Carr and his mainstream-representing colleagues, Phil Bronstein from the San Francisco Chronicle and the Nation‘s Katrina Vanden Heuvel, may have just lucked out. Their argument for maintaining the mainstream media seemed to simply boil down to the fact that there are some good things about it that need to be preserved, and new media is taking the best and claiming it for itself. Also, without the mainstream media, where would the debaters all work?

The morning news show’s producers today announced that starting Monday frequent guest co-host Celeste Headlee will be joining John Hockenberry on the drive time broadcast.

Most recently, Headlee worked as the Midwest correspondent for NPR’s “Day to Day.” She has also worked as a reporter and anchor on public radio stations in Detroit and Flagstaff, Ariz.

Former “Takeaway” co-host Udoji left the show in April to spend more time with her husband and newly adopted baby girl. In June, MSNBC‘s former VP of daytime programming Mark Effron became executive producer of the show.

“The Takeaway” is a jointly produced by New York public radio station WNYC and Public Radio International. Earlier this year, the show lost co-host Adaora Udoji who departed to spend more time with her family.

Effron, a journalist and TV and digital media exec, joins “The Takeaway” from Titan TV Media, a digital network where he served as president and COO. He also writes on industry trends for trade publications like The Communicator.

And in other “Takeaway” news, earlier this week the White House announced that the show’s host John Hockenberry had been appointed to the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships, along with Tom Brokaw and others.
