Forecast is Sunny for WNYW Meteorlogist Shay Ryan, Heading to Tampa

Perhaps the heat wave wasn’t providing enough warmth for Shay Ryan. The WNYW/Channel 5 weekend meteorologist is on her way to a TV station in Tampa. FishbowlNY has been told Ryan starts the new gig immediately.

Ryan, who took over weekends in 2010, began at sister station WWOR/Channel 9 in 2008.

She spent eight years at WXYZ in Detroit. Ryan is married to former WNBC reporter Glenn Zimmerman.

There’s no mention of a replacement for Ryan, but one-time WNBC and WCBS meteorologist John Marshall is on the sidelines. He worked for many years under Channel 5 news director Dianne Doctor.

WNYW could not be reached for comment.

Veteran Cable Anchor Laurie Dhue Finds Work at WPIX

You’ll recall Laurie Dhue from her anchoring on the Fox News Channel from 2000 to 2008. During that time, Dhue was also featured prominently as reporter for Geraldo at Large.

A WPIX spokeswomen tells FishbowlNY that Dhue is now a fill-in PIX Morning News anchor on a per diem basis.

You’ll recall, morning anchor Chris Burrous left Channel 11 last month for the Tribune owned station in Los Angeles.

Other comings and goings at WPIX, WPIX brought meteorologist John Marshall on board in per diem role earlier this month, while the contract of veteran reporter/anchor Jackie Hyland was not renewed.

Former WCBS-TV Reporter Kirstin Cole Back on Air at WPIX

For close to ten years, Kirstin Cole was a top-notch reporter at WCBS/Channel 2. She left the station in September 2010 as the station’s consumer reporter. But in recent weeks she began filing reports for WPIX/Channel 11. It is a homecoming of sorts for Cole, as she was a reporter at Channel 11 from 2000 to 2001.

Cole, who joined WCBS in 2001, had two weekend anchoring stints. She was the weekend evening anchor from 2001 to 2003. From 2006 to April 2007, Cole teamed with Cindy Hsu for weekend morning newscasts.

A WPIX spokeswoman tells FishbowlNY that Cole works “occasionally” for them as a “per diem” reporter.

It was just last weekend that WPIX added veteran meteorologist John Marshall for some fill-in work on the evening newscasts. He had a brief tenure at Channel 2 after more than a dozen years on WNBC.

We told you about the weekend weather changes at WCBS, where veteran meteorologist John Marshall was ousted in favor of Katie Fehlinger earlier this month.

A FishbowlNY Investigation explores if Fehlinger is actually a meteorologist.

It’s not a new question; just the names have been changed. But with more than 30 comments questioning WCBS for dropping Marshall, we looked deeper.

Fehlinger is listed on screen as meteorologist at WCBS where she does weekend morning forecasts, yet there appears to be a grey area for what constitutes a meteorologist. (It should be noted that on their website, Channel 2 refers to Fehlinger as a “weekend weathercaster,” while colleague Lonnie Quinn is the “chief weathercaster.” The website says Elise Finch and John Elliott are the station’s only meteorologists.)

The blond Fehlinger, who was part of the Asylum.com’s “Hottest Weather Girls” countdown, spent the past few years online at Accuweather.com.

According to her LinkedIn page, Fehlinger is “scheduled” to complete her meteorology courses at Mississippi State University this year. Some industry veterans say, technically, that means Fehlinger “is not a meteorologist yet.”

Meteorologist John Marshall ‘Wasn’t Shocked’ by Losing Weekend Shifts at WCBS-TV

If you wake up early on the weekend, then you are probably aware of the John Marshall body of work. He had more than a dozen years under his belt at WNBC when they went in another direction last summer.

But as fate would have it, the timing worked perfectly for Marshall. In August, Megan Glaros left her weekend morning weather anchoring at WCBS-TV for Chicago. That same month, Marshall joined Channel 2 as a per diem employee.

Unlike at WNBC, Marshall, who grew up in New Jersey, was unable to get full-time status at WCBS. On Sunday, he did his final shift for the station. As we reported last week, Katie Fehlinger has been hired to take those shifts. Like Glaros before her (along with the same hair color), Fehlinger also handles weeknight feature reporting.

Marshall says news director David Friend had an open-door policy with him.

WCBS-TV Hires Katie Fehlinger as Weekend Morning Meteorologist

As we reported last month, Katie Fehlinger has been hired as the weekend morning meteorologist at WCBS-TV. Channel 2 made it official yesterday.

Fehlinger joins the station effective March 28. She’ll also do feature reporting during the week.

“Katie Fehlinger is passionate about weather,” said David Friend, WCBS-TV news director. “She is a great addition to the best TV weather team in the tri-state area.”

Prior to joining WCBS, Fehlinger spent four years at AccuWeather in State College, Pennsylvania where she delivered daily national weather coverage. During that time, she served as a regular football, baseball, and hockey game day weather reporter for the YES Network, several regional Fox Sports Networks, NESN, and the Big Ten Network.

A Blizzard of Coverage by Local Stations

As the blizzard began to barrel down on New York yesterday with varying intensity, stations gave viewers information on the storm ending their Christmas holiday with varying results.

The best of the bunch was WABC, which provided top-of-the-hour updates until 3 p.m. with meteorologist Bill Evans. After that WABC, which had no sports commitments, went full throttle with complete c0verage. The seriousness of the impending storm was shown when Bill Ritter was brought in to co-anchor coverage. Ritter was joined by weekend anchor Sandra Bookman. For the next four hours, Ritter and Bookman took viewers on a tour of the snow with reporters stationed throughout the region. The meteorologists’ hands were all on deck as well, with Lee Goldberg and Jeff Smith as part of the special broadcast.

Part of WABC’s coverage was to take Mayor Bloomberg’s press conference live. Another feather in their cap—they would be the only station to carry it in its entirety. Ritter and Bookman, along with seven live reporters and Goldberg and Smith returned for an expanded 11 p.m. newscast.

Meteorologist John Marshall Finds Work at WCBS

John Marshall is back on the air in New York. The veteran meteorologist turned up on WCBS/Channel 2 last weekend, doing weather forecasts on the morning newscasts.

He is reunited with anchor Rob Morrison.

“He and I started about same time at peacock. Great guy. Psyched he’s on board,” Morrison told FishbowlNY via Twitter.

Marshall’s status with WCBS, however, is uncertain.

“He is just filling in until they find a replacement,” a WCBS spokesperson said.

Last month, WNBC didn’t renew Marshall’s contract.
