John Tesh Outlines His Plans for ‘Guerilla Television’

JohnTeshHeadshotThe models of success for John Tesh‘s fall 2014 return to syndicated TV include RightThisMinute and The Better Show. After a decade of co-hosting the Christian-themed radio program Intelligence for Your Life with wife Connie Sellecca and stepson Gib Gerard, Tesh is expanding to the airwaves in the fall.

The daily TV show, also titled Intelligence for Your Life, is being bankrolled via TeshMedia with a relatively miniscule budget of $5 million. Tesh told THR senior editor Alex Ben Block that he is targeting cities where his radio show is most popular:

To sell Intelligence, Tesh recruited former Paramount TV executive Mark Dvornik, who says it will debut this fall even if he can’t sign up affiliates in the biggest markets. Dvornik expects to be in 65 percent to 75 percent of U.S. TV homes – including those in Detroit, New Orleans and San Francisco – but probably not in New York or LA at launch. The show also will air in 110 smaller markets on The CW.

John Tesh Returning to TV

And FishbowlLA thanks Tesh for opting to make his new project something other than a voyeuristic reality TV show about his day-to-day life with Connie Sellecca.

Tesh, who has found great success on radio and the Web with INTELLIGENCE for your life, is now finally expanding the brand to television this June. His advice on topics such as health, wellness, personal finance and relationships will be available in snippets as part of a half-hour syndicated offering of the same name. From today’s announcement:

“The greatest differentiating factor in this program is our local strategy,” says Tesh. “It’s designed for local viewers and advertisers and for the national brands that are interested in a locally-strategic advertising approach.”

“I spent 25 years in the local news world and am naturally very familiar with the needs of the local advertiser,” he adds. “We are implementing the rich content approach we’ve been using for the last 10 years on our radio program, to not only create useful ‘life coaching’ pieces for the viewer, but to also create unique, embedded-content pieces in which our advertisers can reside. This is a show that protects our local and national advertisers from the ‘DVR dilemma.’”

John Tesh Talks Radio Show, NBA on NBC Theme

John Tesh is an accomplished musician, with gold albums, music Emmy Awards, and sell-out concerts to his credit.

To a different crowd, Tesh gained household name recognition from his decade run on Entertainment Tonight.

While the versatile performer always has projects on his plate, Tesh’s main focus is his self-titled daily syndicated radio show. Heard on 382 stations, the program is heard locally on Farmingdale, New York’s WKJY/KJOY.

However, Tesh broadcasts his show on most days from Los Angeles.

On this day, Tesh recorded the program in Manhattan, as he would be at a KJOY promotional event in Franklin Square later in the day. That’s where FishbowlNY caught up with him.

Mary Hart Gets Ready to Say Goodbye

There’s a whole lot of Mary Hart love being shown in the media this week ahead of her final appearance tonight on Entertainment Tonight. And she deserves every bit of it.

Hart is the Johnny Carson of the entertainment TV news magazine world, retiring at the top of her personal game after 29 years on the air. Joining her for an ET send-off taped yesterday were a number of her former male co-hosts, including the best one of them all, John Tesh. Those two had major on-air chemistry, the kind that LA TV station execs dream of when envisioning ideal local news anchor pairings. The latest crowning tributes include one from Brooks Barnes of the New York Times:

“Without Mary, ET starts to look like what it is–kind of dear and not particularly edgy,” said Martin Kaplan, the director of the Norman Lear Center for the study of entertainment and society at the University of Southern California. “I don’t know how large the cultural niche is for dear in a Perez Hilton, TMZ, Gawker world.”
