Fan Tweet Morphs Into $69,000 Kevin Smith Cartoon Feature

How cool is this? A few years ago, Toronto-based animator Steve Stark tweeted out to Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes a cartoon he put together based on a Jay & Silent Bob SModcast. It led to a relationship that now has the Canuck first-time directing the pair’s cartoon feature.

Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie will start rolling out this spring by means of a Red State USA-style cross-country road show, with the two leads in tow for lively post-show podcast Q&A. From today’s announcement:

“This is what can happen when you put the plug in the jug, kids,” said Mewes. “As an actor, it was awesome to play Jay again. But as a producer, I sweated every nickel because I wanted to keep the budget low… And dirty.”

Jon Lovitz Gooses Ora TV Election Night Coverage

There was probably no stranger election panelist intro on Tuesday than the one given by Ora TV’s Larry King for comedian Jon Lovitz. The rejuvenated talk show host explained that he had just watched, the night before, a crazy Kevin Costner-Elvis movie, 3000 Miles to Graceland, that features his guest getting killed.

Lovitz started out by revisiting, in very articulate fashion, the reasons for his recent (and now-infamous) “anti-Obama” rant about one-percenters supposedly not paying their fair share of taxes. The actor emphasized that in addition to a 35% federal tax rate, he is subject to a lowered but still-there capital gains tax on any stock-market reinvestment earnings.

Jon Lovitz Takes Unexpected Flack for Fighting Anti-Semitism

You’d think it would be tough for anyone to find fault with a celebrity’s effort to fight a horrific case of anti-Semitism. You’d be wrong. That’s exactly what happened to Jon Lovitz after he tweeted a pic of the three 15-year-old girls who defaced the home of a Jewish friend in Northridge with feces and swastikas. Lovitz sent a message with his pic.

“The 3 girls who are bullying my friend’s daughter. They want to be known. Let them be famous as Jew haters. Pls RT.”

The girls were subsequently expelled from school. Kudos to Lovitz for bringing some accountability to a terrible crime, right? Not according to Above the Law associate editor Chris Danzig.

Seriously, dude?

Jon Lovitz Glad He Ignored Agent’s Advice

Stand-up comedy has turned out to be just the ticket for former SNL regular Jon Lovitz. At age 54, he’s about to head back to Chicago for a third stint, performing in Schaumberg and throwing out another first pitch at Wrigley Field.

However, back when Lovtiz decided in 2003 to change things up in the face of disappearing movie role opportunities, he didn’t exactly get a vote of confidence from his talent rep. During a recent telephone interview from LA with Chicago Sun-Times reporter Annie Alleman , Lovitz recalled the off-putting feedback he received:

“It was like starting over. I was 46, and I needed to make money,” he said. “Stand-up was something I always wanted to do. I told my agent, ‘You’ve got to get me work.’ They go, ‘Why don’t you sell your house?’ That really made me angry.”
