News Corp To Train Wall Street Journal Reporters To Film Videos on Their iPhones

At the DLD digital media conference in Germany, Jon Miller, chief digital officer for News Corporation, said that the company will be ramping up its focus on video, reports paidContent.

“I actually think we’re entering the age of video now…some people think we’re already there but I think we’re just getting started,” he said.

So much so that the organization will work to ensure that its print publications keep up with the video revolution:

“We’re producing everything across the board now,” said Miller. “[Because] we’re focused on video…we’re trying to move our print publications into video, too.” That includes training Wall Street Journal reporters to “take videos on their iPhones,” as well as write.

Whip out your camera phones, print journalists. Good old reporting isn’t going to cut it anymore.

NATPE 2012: News Corp.’s Miller Pushes Video, ‘Wall Street Journal’ at TV Conference

News Corp. chief digital officer Jon Miller argued that the future of digital media will center around video… and of course that his company was in prime position to take advantage of it.

“I think we are just entering into the real video age now,” Miller said at the NATPE conference in Miami Beach.

NATPE is a conference for television programming executives, with production companies and networks–both domestic and foreign–looking to make deals.

Miller said that research indicates that on the axis of money spent and time sent, print seems to be losing, the web seems to be winning, and television is in a happy place in-between. As a result, he says, print is the medium that needs to adapt most.

“It is pretty likely that is where the money is coming from, which is why we are doing things like what we are doing with the Wall Street Journal,” Miller said.

The Wall Street Journal Project is very highly regarded at News Corp., someone close to the matter says. During business hours, the WSJ has a CNBC-style lineup of business programs, streamed on WSJ.com. The key for the WSJ project is expanding its distribution beyond the newspaper’s website. Our source says that the company has CNBC in its sites, trying to create the next generation of business network, without many of the high costs associated with launching a new TV network.

Rupert Murdoch Unveils iPad Newspaper ‘The Daily’ At the Guggenheim

Jon Miller, Eddie Cue, Rupert Murdoch, Jesse Angelo

This morning FishbowlNY ventured to the Guggenheim Museum on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, where News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch unveiled “The Daily,” the company’s long-awaited iPad newspaper.

Joining Murdoch on stage at the event were “Daily” editor Jesse Angelo, publisher Greg Clayman, News Corp. digital chief Jon Miller and Apple’s Eddie Cue.

We also spotted News Corp. COO Chase Carey and one of Murdoch’s sons, James Murdoch, in the crowd.

Playing around with “The Daily” you get a sense of just how much time, effort and money went into producing it. It looks slick, and the content is strong.

Murdoch says the company spent $30 million to develop it, and operational costs will run around $500,000 a week, as a result, he said the bar for “success” will be quite low.

As rumored, it will cost $0.99 a week, or $39.99 a year, with Apple’s new subscription billing system. You can try it out for free for two weeks starting today, with Verizon on board as the launch sponsor.
