Scintillating TheWrap Stats Also Remind: comScore Counts It Differently [Updated]

On January 26, TheWrap will celebrate its fifth anniversary. And when staff gather at the outlet’s west Los Angeles offices for that purpose, there will be extra cause for whooping and hollering.

TheWrapLogoLast month, guided in large part by the astute Web traffic wisdom and knowledge of executive editor Joseph Kapsch, TheWrap lapped rivals Deadline and Variety by a very impressive comScore margin. TheWrap welcomed a little over 3.4 million unique visitors (its highest monthly total yet), compared to around 2.6 million for Variety and Deadline.

There is, per usual and as mentioned in TheWrap item, a wide discrepancy between comScore’s December 2013 numbers and those tabulated by Google Analytics and Quantcast. Which begs the answer to the question – how can the latter two services measure so many more unique visitors for TheWrap (around seven million)?

Pair of Columbia J-School Alums Officially Join TheWrap

All sorts of good things are happening at TheWrap this first week of September. On Tuesday, the Hollywood industry-focused outlet launched a complete overhaul of its website, an iteration being referred to as 3.0. In addition, a pair of recent Columbia journalism school grads who had been interning over the summer have both been promoted to full-time status.

TV reporter Tony Maglio, who graduated from Columbia this spring, started in a full-time capacity on Tuesday. He holds an MBA and B.S. in Business Management and Marketing from Monmouth University, and in fact was working in accounting and finance before he decided to make the transition via Columbia to reporting.

“I cannot believe I actually get to write about television for a living,” Maglio tells FishbowlNY. “And I could not have hand-picked a better place to officially kick off my journalism career than TheWrap!”

Josh Dickey’s Tenure at TMZ Lasts All of Three Months

TMZ founder Harvey Levin can be a demanding boss. His ability to ferret out stories, sources and exclusives in a telephone manner that is second-to-none creates exceedingly high expectations for all those who work alongside him in the 24/7 newsroom.

Did the Levin horizon of journalism deliverables have something to do with the exit in late June of Josh Dickey (pictured), hired as TMZ.com managing editor just a few months earlier? Probably.

This morning, just as TheWrap provided a friendly, familiar home for fired Variety film reporter Jeff Sneider, it is now also the new place of re-employ for Sneider’s old boss. Dickey has rejoined Sharon Waxman‘s operation as managing editor, bumping Joseph Kapsch up to Lisa Fung‘s vacated executive editor slot.

An Historic Hollywood Trades Panel

We’ve attended many Digital Hollywood’s and similar conferences over the years. For the life of us, we cannot remember another time when editorial representatives from all four Hollywood trades participated in the same panel discussion.

The May day confluence will occur tomorrow afternoon at the Ritz-Carlton in Marina del Rey. Moderating “The New Digital Age of the Hollywood Trade Press” will be Rick Markovitz, president of Weissman/Markovitz Communications. And participating:

- Andrew Wallenstein, editor-in-chief, digital, Variety
- Chis Krewson, editor, THR.com, The Hollywood Reporter
- Dominic Patten, reporter, Deadline Hollywood
- Joseph Kapsch, deputy managing editor, TheWrap

Jethro Nededog Follows Joseph Kapsch to TheWrap

Lots going on these days at TheWrap. As we previously reported, Joseph Kapsch is set to begin Monday March 25 as deputy managing editor. Also, in a separate, unrelated move, Jon Thurber has been completing his tenure at the outlet this week.

Now comes word of another hire very closely connected to the incoming deputy editor. Jethro Nededog (pictured), Kapsch’s longtime friend and colleague at Zap2it, The Hollywood Reporter and Celebuzz (where he is currently), will be starting at TheWrap April 1 as senior TV writer. He will report to Tim Molloy.

The news was shared internally this afternoon with the trade’s hard-working staff and included the following quotes:

Nededog: “I’m ecstatic about joining the TheWrap team. Not only does it bring me back to the caliber of stories that I enjoy writing and breaking, but I get a chance to work and learn from some talented people who I’ve looked up to, including Tim Molloy, Joseph Kapsch and, of course, Sharon Waxman.”

TheWrap Hires Joseph Kapsch as Deputy Managing Editor

We just wrapped up (pun intended) a brief conference call with Sharon Waxman and Joseph Kapsch. They were kind enough to ring FishbowlLA this morning to let us know that Kapsch, formerly with Celebuzz, The Hollywood Reporter and the LA Times, will be relocating back to the west coast to start as deputy managing editor of TheWrap on March 25.

“I just think that when it comes to the entertainment industry, you have to go where the opportunities are,” Kapsch said. “And this was a really great opportunity for me.” Added Waxman: “I’ve been a fan of Kapsch for a long time and admired what he’s accomplished at other sites.”

Kapsch will be tasked with growing the breadth, depth and audience for content created by the TheWrap’s roster of staff reporters. The site also has a network of several hundred unpaid bloggers, but that side of things will remain the purview of managing editor Lew Harris.

BIG Changes at CELEBUZZ

This afternoon, via Facebook, CELEBUZZ executive editor Joseph Kapsch announced he was leaving his New York post. Just a few months after exiting The Hollywood Reporter and relocating cross-country.

“A decision like this is never easy to make,” CELEBUZZ editor-in-chief Dylan Howard tells FishbowlLA. “I wish Joseph the absolute best as he begins the next phase of his professional life.” The Kapsch departure comes weeks after BUZZMEDIA VP of programming Gillian Sheldon shifted to Berman Braun.

Such is life at a fast-paced, celebrity-driven operation. Meaning that along with these two departures, there are a variety of new CELEBUZZ arrivals to pass on:

- Andrea Simpson, who worked with Howard at Radar Online and Star magazine, is CELEBUZZ news director;

- Kristin Koch, formerly senior editor of style at XO Group, has assumed the similar title of senior editor at CELEBUZZ. She also previously contributed to Vanity Fair and iVillage;

Jethro Nededog on Joining Celebuzz

It’s been a month since Jethro Nededog switched to the professional channel of Celebuzz senior editor, TV. But one thing remains the same – he is reporting once more to good friend and mentor Joseph Kapsch.

The two previously worked together at the LA Times, Zap2it and, most recently, The Hollywood Reporter. Kapsch joined the fast-expanding BUZZMEDIA site in June as New York based executive editor, while Nededog has been working out of the company’s Hollywood offices since June 25.

“We care a lot about breaking news at Celebuzz, but we also care about the context of that news,” Nededog (pictured) told FishbowlLA Friday afternoon via telephone from Comic-Con. “For example, within my first week, I wrote a story about how Anderson Cooper‘s coming out will affect his TV career and viewers.”

Nededog, a native of San Diego and Comic-Con veteran, was at the show this year alongside Celebuzz movie writer Taryn Ryder. His numerous SDCC items included this text and video report about Australian actress Yvonne Strahovski joining the cast of Dexter.

THR Grabs Variety.com Editor Chris Krewson

This one’s gotta hurt – big time – at the Variety end.

Ahead of the impending sale of Tinseltown’s second oldest trade, Web editor Chris Krewson has decided to head on up Wilshire Blvd. to perform the same duties for Variety’s revamped, slightly older competitor. He starts as THR.com editor tomorrow.

“Chris brings a strong news metabolism that will continue to drive growth at THR.com,” said editorial director Janice Min in this afternoon’s announcement. “As our digital footprint continues to grow, his contribution will be invaluable.”

Added Krewson: “I’m thrilled to be joining THR, especially at a time when the brand’s online presence is growing at an incredible pace as its digital properties expand each day.”

THR.com’s Joseph Kapsch Headed to Celebuzz.com

We told you earlier this month about Dylan Howard moving from Star magazine and Radar Online to celebuzz.com as the BUZZMEDIA site’s new editor-in-chief. At the time, Howard promised he would be “hiring some of the best journalists in our beat over the coming weeks.”

The first hire is a good one. Relocating within a few weeks from LA to New York as celebuzz.com’s incoming executive editor will be Joseph Kapsch (pictured), currently the editor of THR.com. One of the reasons for the move is that it will allow Kapsch to be closer to family. Here’s what Kapsch posted on his Facebook page:

SOME EXCITING/BREAKING PERSONAL NEWS: So most of you that know me well know that I’ve always said when the right time and opportunity arrived I would eventually head back to New York. Well, that time has arrived: Today, I accepted a new opportunity with BUZZMEDIA in New York as the executive editor, Celebuzz.
