Atlantic Media Launches ‘Defense One,’ Covering Defense, National Security

Atlantic Media is expanding its brand with Defense One, a site that will cover United States defense and national security news. This doesn’t exactly get us excited, although we’d be interested in checking out a “The 27 Coolest Top Gun Call Signs” piece.

However, if you consider yourself among the “influentials in the national security community,” maybe Defense One is the site for you. Here’s how Justin Smith, president of Atlantic Media, sells the site:

Defense One will bring to this important market the disruptive combination of intelligent, indispensable journalism and leading edge digital expertise that is the hallmark of all of Atlantic Media’s properties. We see Defense One as a major growth venture and a core Atlantic Media brand.

Atlantic Media Revamps Site, Changes Logo

Out with the old, in with the new. Atlantic Media has revamped its website and updated its clunky old logo (pictured, right), in an effort to show that the company is “digital first.” The company behind The Atlantic, The Atlantic Wire, National Journal, Quartz and more, updated both the site and the logo with an eye toward minimalism, and it they definitely pulled it off.

The site uses HTML5, so that it appears the same across all platforms. It’s sleek and fast, and easy to navigate. The logo? Well, as you can see — the new logo is a much nicer look than the old one.

Justin Smith, Atlantic Media’s president, is obviously a big fan of the changes too. ”During a time of profound technological change, we have embraced the historic disruption facing our industry and assembled a stable of digital-first brands that reach leaders across all sectors — consumer, business, media, and government,” said Smith, in a statement. “We engage these audiences by producing high-quality journalism that is delivered through a range of formats consistent with shifting media consumption habits. Our new logo and website reflect the spirit of innovation that is at the heart of everything we do.”

Elizabeth Baker Keffer Promoted, Expands Duties at Atlantic Media

Elizabeth Baker Keffer, president of Atlantic Media’s Atlantic Live — the events arm of the magazine — has been promoted. She will now take on the additional role of president of Quartz Live and senior vice president/group publisher of live events. Baker Keffer will now be responsible for expanding events for the recently launched business site, Quartz. She will also oversee best practices for any live event programs across the company.

“Elizabeth is a superb leader and represents the gold standard when it comes to conceptualizing and executing content-rich events aimed at influential audiences,” said Atlantic Media’s president, Justin Smith, in a statement. “She and her extremely talented team will bring enormous value to Quartz Live. M. Scott Havens Named President of The Atlantic

M. Scott Havens has been named president of The Atlantic. Havens most recently served as Atlantic Media Company’s senior vice president of finance and digital preparations.

Atlantic Media’s Quartz Adds Taylor Gray

Atlantic Media Company has named Taylor Gray vice president of global marketing for Quartz, its soon-to-launch business site. Gray comes to Quartz from the Huffington Post Media Group, where he worked as vice president of marketing and social media strategy.

“Taylor boldly left one of last century’s most prominent traditional media brands to join the front lines of disruptive digital media,” said Justin Smith, Atlantic Media’s president. “Across his career, he has distinguished himself as a world-class brand builder and marketing innovator. Atlantic Media and Quartz are delighted to welcome him to our leadership team.”

Prior to his time at HuffPo, Gray was global head of brand and customer knowledge at Reuters. Before that he served as associate publisher of Time and president of Time Magazine Interactive Group.

The Atlantic Promotes Three Top Editors

The Atlantic Media Company has promoted three of its top editors. James Bennet has been named Editor-in-Chief of The Atlantic, Scott Stossel has been tapped as Editor, Atlantic Magazine, and Bob Cohn has jumped to Editor, Atlantic Digital.

Bennet has been with the Atlantic since 2006, most recently as Editor of The Atlantic. Stossel started in 1992, left in 1996, and rejoined earlier this year. He was most recently Deputy Editor of The Atlantic. Cohn has been with the company since 2009, most recently Editorial Director of Atlantic Digital.

The Atlantic Media Company has promoted Scott Havens from Vice President of Digital Strategy and Operation to Senior Vice President of Finance and Digital Operations. The move gives Havens responsibility over the company’s finances, and shifts the every day operations of its digital units to three business operations: The Atlantic, Government Executive and National Journal Group.

Justin Smith, President of the Atlantic Media Company, told Adweek that Havens has the chops to move the company in the right direction. “With the exception of marketing services business, which is more of a services model, the bulk of the opportunity we’re looking at is digital,” said Smith. “We thought it was really, really important that we put in charge of finance someone who really understands digital media.”

Steve Clemons Named Editor-in-Chief of AtlanticLIVE

Atlantic Media Company president Justin Smith announced today that Steve Clemons has joined The Atlantic as Editor-in-Chief of AtlanticLIVE and Washington Editor-At-Large for The Atlantic.

Clemons, who comes to The Atlantic from the think tank New America Foundation, was one of Washington’s early political bloggers, publishing Washington Note, which will now be included in the family of blogs at TheAtlantic.com. Clemons will also write more broadly for the website and occasionally for the magazine.

“Both James Bennet and I are delighted to welcome Steve to our teams,” said Elizabeth Baker Keffer, vice president of The Atlantic and president of AtlanticLive, in a press release. “It is a rare opportunity to add such a senior talent and we know that Steve will lift our enterprise to a new level of ambition.”

Changes At Atlantic Media: Research Co. Sold, Justin Smith Named President

David Bradley, the chairman of Atlantic Media Co., announced some big changes to his Washington, D.C.-based company today.

Emphasizing his focus on media, Bradley announced that he is selling his stake in the investor research firm he founded in 2008, Potomac Research Group. Bradley is passing PRG to Suzanne Clark, who has been serving as president of Atlantic Media’s National Journal for three years. Clark, who founded PRG with Bradley, will become the company’s CEO next month.

“Only the chance to grow my own company could influence me to leave my exceptional colleagues at Atlantic Media,” Clark said. “I am exceedingly grateful to David for providing this unique entrepreneurial opportunity.”

Justin Smith, previously the president of Atlantic Consumer Media overseeing The Atlantic and its related entities, will now be taking on Clark’s responsibilities as well as president of Atlantic Media. Explained the company:

“Smith will now add to his responsibilities oversight of the National Journal and Government Executive Groups — including the industry-leading National Journal, CongressDaily, The Hotline and Government Executive publications.”

Partytime With The Atlantic

Last night, members of the New York media gathered to toast The Atlantic and the incredible year the publication — and its parent company — have had.

There was plenty to celebrate. This year, the title reported a 16 percent increase in advertising revenue, thanks to a 115 percent increase in digital revenue. Events and subscription revenues also saw a boost, with digital subscription revenues climbing 158 percent. What’s more, 2009 saw the launch of the company’s new digital property, The Atlantic Wire, as well as politics, business and food channels on TheAtlantic.com.

“We had such an incredible year,” publisher Jay Lauf told us last night.

And there were plenty of people on hand last night to celebrate that year with Lauf and The Atlantic‘s president Justin Smith, including Glynnis MacNicol and Rachel Sklar of Mediaite.com, All Things D‘s Peter Kafka, John Carney of Silicon Alley Insider, New York Times reporter Brian Stelter and PRNewser editor Joe Ciarallo.

Atlantic Wire Launches With (Media) Star-Studded Fete

All of the (op-ed) stars were out last night to celebrate the launch of Atlantic Wire, the opinion aggregating sister site to TheAtlantic.com.

Writers for The Atlantic and TheAtlantic.com like Corby Kummer, Marc Ambinder, Ta-Nehisi Coates and Megan McArdle sipped champagne or checked out the incredible view from the balcony at The Glass Houses on the top floor of the Chelsea Arts Tower, as slides of the Atlantic 50 streamed above the bar.

Atlantic Consumer Media chair David Bradley, president Justin Smith and editor James Bennet later said a few words for the crowd, which included The New York Times‘s Frank Rich and David Carr, Rachel Sklar and Glynnis MacNicol from Mediaite.com and AOL DailyFinance‘s Jeff Bercovici.

“We like to fight with each other,” Bennet said of the impetus behind launching Atlantic Wire, which gathers some of the best opinions on the biggest topics of the day in one place.

Bradley, who leads arguably one of the few media companies that is growing despite the recession, offered some advice to would-be media moguls. “Before you own a media company, you should own a company that does well,” he said, noting how his previous experience in business allowed him to effectively operate Atlantic Consumer Media.

Well he certainly knows how to put on a party.

Why I Followed Andrew Sullivan to the Financial District

It’s sort of fitting that my last FBNY post should be about The Atlantic dinner/conversation I attended earlier this evening, which featured Michael Hirschorn and Andrew Sullivan, since this post was actually my first foray into this whole blogging thing (and remains my top Google result).

The talk — the dinner part included chili, cornbread, and brownies — was billed in the invite as “A Conversation on the Future of Media” and the crowd that packed Justin Smith‘s downtown apartment included a whole lot of very recognizable New York Media names who will no doubt be heavily involved in that very Future. Here’s a non-exhaustive list: Bonnie Fuller, Harry Smith, Richard Perez-Pena, Nick Denton, Tad Friend, Duff McDonald, Gabriel Snyder, Jeff Bercovici, Matt Haber, Danny Shea, Brian Stelter, Rachel Sklar, Jon Fine, Dylan Stableford, Laurel Touby, James Bennett…and also, strangely(?), (the very tall) Sigourney Weaver.

Alas, neither Sullivan nor Hirschorn appeared to have any definite ideas about what ‘Media’ might look in the future other than that it would probably be very different from what we currently have, but also that the New York Times is in a lot of trouble. For those of you keeping score Andrew Sullivan still reads the dead tree edition of the Times every morning and does not Twitter. @LaurelTouby, @BrianStelter, and @RachelSklar, however, all have nice tweets from the party. Now(!), before I sign off for good here’s a couple of other interesting things I read today:

Gay Talese, who is described solely in this article as “an author who writes on the sex trade.” Ahem.

This, for reasons which will become clear at some point tomorrow.

TheAtlantic.com Exploring Further Acquisitions

TheAtlantic.com — in our opinion is one of the Web’s best success stories in terms of how to establish a magazine online — is apparently looking to spread its wings even further. PaidContent spoke to Justin Smith, president of Atlantic Consumer Media who says that the site has plans to “buy or invest in content sites that can complement TheAtlantic.com‘s coverage.”

Meaning? Says Smith: “We’ve moved away from the general nature of commentary on the site and have been looking to do more breaking news, like the item we ran on Hillary Clinton’s campaign staff e-mails…And we’ve been able to prove that long-form journalism can work on the web, as long as you have a blockbuster piece. For example, Nicholas Carr‘s cover story, Is Google Making Us Stupid?, from last July, got 1 million pageviews. More recently, a piece on the economic collapse, The Quiet Coup, got 1.5 million pageviews in just five days.” PC breaks it all down in more detail here.

Lunch: The British Are Coming — Tomorrow!

We’re still exhausted from hob nobbing with last week’s overflow of A-listers, so we were almost glad things were a bit more subdued at 55th & Fifth today. It gave us a chance to catch up and chat with some our favorite regulars. Imagine my chagrin when I stopped by Matt Blank‘s table and Showtime’s CEO told me had I switched my weekly reservation to tomorrow, I’d be chatting with some of the biggest stars of his network. On Thursday, Matt and entertainment president Bob Greenblatt are hosting their own “British invasion” at table one when the entire glorious cast of The Tudors — the dreamy Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Peter O’Toole and Natalie Dormer will be breaking bread with the network’s other stars — including Tracy Ullman, whose show State of the Union, will premiere March 30, the same night as the new season of The Tudors. Thank God, something to watch! (I’ve been completely depressed over the fast approaching season finale of HBO’s In Treatment…) Also in attendance, says Matt, will be Billie Piper, who stars in — and we’re not kidding — the upcoming Secret Diaries of a Call Girl, which will premiere in June. Talk about timely. Perhaps the newly unemployed Eliot Spitzer can make a cameo appearance.

Here’s the rundown on today’s crowd:

1. Gerry Imber, Jerry Della Femina and the gang with Fox News’ Monica Crowley.

2. Showtime’s chairman and CEO Matt Blank with über producer Michael Davies.

3. “Mayor” Joe Armstrong and Glamoureditrix Cindi Leive (Glad you hear you’re a loyal “Lunch” reader!). The Mayor was celebrating with his friend Cindi over a glass of red wine — and a few asparagus spears — about her big news. Minutes before lunch, Cindi found out Glamour is a finalist for the fourth year in a row for the National Magazine Award for General Excellence. No woman’s magazine has ever been so honored! The worthy competitors: Time, People, National Geographic and Martha Stewart Living. Congrats! Before Cindi and Joe tucked into their lunch, we unanimously decided New York‘s Spitzer cover this week is one for the ages. Brilliant!
