Calderone discussed his coverage through Christmas of the attempted terrorism attack in Detroit and his blog post yesterday about The New York Times Magazine‘s decision to print its recent story on terrorism online two weeks before its scheduled print date.

“This is actually the longest stretch of time that the paper has ever published a magazine story online that’s going to end up in print. It’s still not going to be in the print edition for two more weeks,” he explained. “It shows something about how the Times thought that there was such an urgency to this story. And it also raises questions about the newspaper industry and whether you can sit on great material for a couple weeks or do you have to get it online as fast as possible.”

Also discussed: political memoirs to watch out for in 2010, including Karl Rove‘s upcoming book and what Calderone will be covering during the coming year.

We kept one eye on Twitter all day on Friday, waiting for some crazy news to break. Who knew it would be about former VP candidate and Alaska governor Sarah Palin? In the afternoon, news started to trickle in. The first reports from a press conference in Alaska without a live transmission were that Palin would not run for a second term. Then it became clear that she would be resigning, at the end of the month, and her lieutenant governor will be taking over her role for the remainder of her term.

In the days that followed, talking heads and critics have attempted to make sense of the unexpected turn of events, but Palin’s reasons for her resignation are still unclear. CNN‘s Anderson Cooper interviewed Palin’s spokeperson Meg Stapleton on Friday but didn’t get any closer to understanding the decision (see video above). Conservative pundits Karl Rove, Mike Huckabee, Chuck Grassley and George Will all appeared on Sunday morning talk shows questioning Palin’s unprecedented move.

Some have (not surprisingly) managed to find the humor in the situation. Political analyst Andy Ostroy suggested a few other jobs for Palin including Alaska tour guide and personal shopper, while Berkman Center fellow David Weinberger listed the top 10 reasons she resigned. Number one? “Desperate bid to be mocked by Tina Fey one last time.”

Expect more weighing in over the next few days as all the “media elite” start to return from their holiday weekend vacations. No rest for the weary!

The best way to handle bad press is to overwhelm it with other press. If you try to refute, and think that’s an effective way for that to go away, it’s not. All it will do is increase that particular angle in your Google search. The only way to deal with is to keep on going and take in other press for good things.

Fournier recently made headlines when an old email exchange between he and White House adviser Karl Rove came to light. In it Fournier, who was an AP reporter at the time, is quoted as telling Rove to “keep up the fight.” He later said he regretted the “breezy nature of the correspondence.”

Timing is everything. Just ask Hillary Clinton. If we’d come a day earlier we would have dined with Karl Rove. (Well, okay, we’d have been in the same room.) Our spy says the sight of ‘Bush’s brain’-turned-Fox commentator at table five had the joint buzzing (or was it hissing?). In any event, politics were still very much front and center today. My pal producer Beverly Camhe introduced me to Patricia Duff who had just yesterday hosted a lunch at the Friar’s Club with Paul Begala for her political think tank, The Common Good. According to Beverly, who says joining Patricia’s group has been “life-changing,” Paul told the crowd that he’s all but certain Barack Obama will win the Democratic nomination. Since Paul is a Hillary supporter his prediction carries some heft. Patricia, who has also hosted Henry Kissinger and economic advisor Robert Hormats, is sure to have more heavy hitters hold forth on all things presidential in the coming months. Check it out yourself. After all, you can’t spend all your free time watching Gossip Girl no matter what New York says…

A year watching Steven Colbert fillet the Bush administration at the White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington, we knew Colbert’s replacement, Rich Little, would be about as edgy as a butter knife. What we didn’t know: Little’s act would bomb like one. Which is, to a man, what everyone in the room said (except for Bush himself, who said Little was “absolutely perfect“).

The whole thing made us feel that we were not at the White House Correspondents Dinner, but rather frozen in a 1970s moment … stuck in a basement somewhere with orange carpeting, flower patterned couches, wood paneling and a black and white television with rabbit ears.

In fact, the evening’s lone exciting moment came in the form of Sheryl Crow and Karl Rove, who got into a Lou Piniella-worthy argument over global warming between the tables. (Crow and Laurie David‘s take is here.)
