Katy Perry Nabs Cosmo’s First Ever Global Cover

For reasons we do not understand, Katy Perry is extremely popular. Her music is mediocre, her outfits are seemingly chosen by a drunk, blind stylist, and she tweets things like “Make grilled cheese fer you da best,” but no matter! The people of the world have spoken, and they want more Perry, not less. So Cosmopolitan is giving it to them.

Cosmo has announced that Perry will grace the front of the magazine’s first ever global cover. That means Perry will appear on the front of all 62 editions of the glossy. Joanna Coles, Cosmo’s editor, considered Perry the perfect fit.

“Katy’s music and attitude have universal appeal to young women everywhere,” said Coles, in a statement. “She crosses all cultural boundaries. Her music is soulful and empowering in equal measure.”

What does it mean that Perry is a global icon? Well, before we answer that, we’re going to have a drink or 10. We’ll let you know what we come up with later.

Bob Marley Rises Up on Billboard’s Social 50 Chart

BillboardLogoAre you familiar with Billboard magazine’s Social 50 chart? If not, here’s an explanation of what it tracks:

A ranking of the most active artists on the
world’s leading social networking sites. Artists’ popularity is determined by a formula blending their weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views and weekly song plays, as measured by Next Big Sound.

Miley Cyrus, Justin Timberlake and Katy Perry are currently 1-2-3. But, as per a report by the magazine’s social/streaming charts manager William Gruger, there’s also some noteworthy activity down below:

Bob Marley, who has the second-largest social media presence for a dead artist (behind Michael Jackson), reaches a new peak on the Social 50 chart. He rises 37 to 8 in his 88th week on the list, marking the third time Marley has climbed into the top 10.

Actor Taylor Negron Celebrates the Life, Legacy of an LA Murder Victim

A piece posted Friday afternoon on xojane.com by actor Taylor Negron about the horrific murder of 81-year-old LA resident Catherine Davis is getting a lot of attention this weekend. Deservedly so.

Negron fills in the many blanks contained in the rash of sensational media coverage more concerned about leveraging the SEO potential of a Katy Perry ex-boyfriend reference than discovering the true identity of Sons of Anarchy actor Johnny Lewis’ alleged victim. During his early years as an actor in LA, Negron rented every room in Davis’ “writer’s villa” abode in Los Feliz. It was a place that welcomed numerous other performers such as Val Kilmer, Parker Posey and Thomas Jane.

Negron notes that Davis and her daughter were both writers. Margaret penned “biographies of prominent Los Angeles figures and families,” with Negron and co. attending related book launch events. Mom meanwhile was working on an equally ambitious portrait:

Cathy, always the writer and reader, began writing her own historical biography on the life of Phoebe Apperson Hearst, mother of William Randolph Hearst. She was working on the book in her room when she was murdered.

Tom Leykis’ Latest Online Gambit: 50,000 Songs in a Row

On Monday at noon PT, Tom Leykis kicked off his latest Internet experiment: the all-music stream Pure Pop Hits. Aimed squarely at the 12-to-24 demo, it features a DJ-less run of songs from the past three years and is set to play 50,000 of them… in a row.

“We are fully licensed with ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and Sound Exchange as a webcaster,” Leykis tells FishbowlLA. “The total cost of operating Pure Pop Hits is a fraction of the cost of the KIIS-FM receptionist… if they still have one… About $7,000.”

To put that crazy 50K number in proper perspective, it means there will zero commercial interruptions in 2012. Featured artists include Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Usher and Pitbull. Pure Pop Hits also promises to never censor any song lyrics.

Women Occupy Seven out of The Top 10 Spots in Most Powerful List

Forbes’Most Powerful Celebrity” list is jam packed with women. In fact, women take seven out of the top 10 spots in the magazine’s report, which ranks people according to earnings and fame. Jennifer Lopez takes the number one spot and Oprah — the highest ranking media mogul on the list — is runner-up. Other women rounding out the top 10 include Rihanna (4), Lady Gaga (5), Britney Spears (6), Kim Kardashian (7) and Katy Perry (8).

We’ve seen this “female focused” trend already, when Time’s annual Time 100 list featured 38 women, more than ever before. Does this mean that 2012 is the year of the woman? Are we even allowed to write that considering Forbes counts Kardashian as “powerful?”

Probably not.

Katy Perry’s Dad Slams Jews

Evangelical preacher Keith Hudson, father to pop star Katy Perry, seems to have some anti-Semetic leanings. And he appears to have a special disdain for Los Angeles Jews. According to multiple reports, during a recent sermon to his congregation in Westlake, Ohio, Hudson said:

You know how to make the Jew jealous? Have some money, honey. You go to L.A. and they own all the Rolex and diamond places.

Walk down a part of L.A. where we live and it is so rich it smells. You ever smell rich? They are all Jews, hallelujah! Amen.

Poor Katy Perry. If this guy was your dad, you’d marry Russell Brand too.

Photo Agency Seeks Katy Perry Damages

In this corner, we have Mavrix, a Los Angeles-Miami based seller of celebrity pics. In the other is Idontlikeyouinthatway.com, part of of the far-flung family of CraveOnline.com websites.

Mavrix, per a report this morning on Courthouse News, is alleging that the Crave destination illicitly grabbed some Katy Perry photos. It is seeking a whopping $3 million in damages:

“In the marketplace, celebrity photos carry tremendous value,” Mavrix says in its federal complaint. “Mavrix has licensed individual images of celebrities for over $100,000 to major publication outlets… Defendants herein have driven massive traffic to their website in part due to the presence of the sought after and searched-for celebrity images.
