Awards Pundits Cast Their Votes for Most Egregious Golden Globe Snub

There was no HFPA silver lining this morning for Robert De Niro. Deadline Hollywood awards expert Pete Hammond thinks he knows why:

The omission of Silver Linings Playbook’s Robert De Niro [from Best Supporting Actor] was among the most surprising snubs to me but clearly those two Django co-stars DiCaprio and Waltz rode in and stole his thunder (he also was too busy working to do the all-important – in terms of nominations – HFPA press conference).

Over at TheWrap, Steve Pond leads off his analysis with a look at how the lack of a Beasts of the Southern Wild Best Drama nod underscores the starry-eyed HFPA ballot view:

How else to explain the way the Globes voters ignored Beasts but nominated Nicole Kidman for the laughably trashy The Paperboy? And not only did they go for Kidman in that potboiler, but they gave her a second nomination for her performance in the TV movie Hemingway & Gellhorn.

Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj Joining American Idol

Get ready for the most dysfunctional season in American Idol history.

Country star Keith Urban and rapper/pseudo-Republican Nicki Minaj have signed on as the final judges for the Fox singing competition.  They will be  paired with R&B legend Mariah Carey and Randy Jackson to form quite the odd foursome.

Even though Urban’s compensation wasn’t revealed, Minaj reportedly signed a one-year contract for $12 million and further extending her 15 minutes of fame.

A-List Turnout for Kathy Freston’s Vegan Book Party

For most of us ink-stained wretches, throwing a book party in Los Angeles during a torrential downpour would whittle the attendees down to single digits. But when Arianna Huffington and Wendi Murdoch (yes, wife of Rubert) host such an event, everyone grabs an umbrella and braves the rain.

Friday night’s event, hosted at Arianna’s Brentwood home, was held in honor of Kathy Freston‘s newest book, “Veganist: Lose Weight, Get Healthy, Change The World.” Notable guests included Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, Moby, Frances Fisher, Lorne Michaels, and Rob Reiner. So naturally, there was plenty of starfuckery going on. This fishie was making polite conversation with an elderly gentleman when he abruptly shoved me out of the way to get to Marla Maples. Remember her? Other 90′s flashbacks in attendance included Elizabeth Berkley, Tracey Ullman, Candice Bergen, and Oliver Stone.

Roger Friedman Points Thievery Finger at Deadline.com

New York based showbiz columnist Roger Friedman has never been shy about outing media outlets that allegedly steal material from his Showbiz 411 website to then claim the news, exclusively, as their own. In fact, learning about the latest poacher(s) is half the fun of checking in with Friedman’s (recently revamped) site.

Yesterday, Friedman went for the thievery trifecta, accusing People of grabbing some Nicole Kidman-Keith Urban baby naming background info and the Deadline.com website family of two uncredited showbiz news borrows. The first, claims Friedman, involved a TVLine.com item by Michael Ausiello about Ricky Gervais possibly guesting on the US version of The Office; the other was a Deadline.com piece about Regis Philbin‘s retirement announcement.

Deadline lifted an entire story out of this column yesterday [1/18], about Regis not retiring from his career but simply leaving his show. This Nellie Andreeva is really a piece of work.

Glamour Women of the Year Awards: ‘I’d Like to Thank My Mother’

lieveglm.jpgLast night’s Glamour Women of the Year Awards ceremony held at Carnegie Hall was a rare thing — interesting and inspiring all at the same time (and how often can you say that?!) We’ve all heard more than once in the last twelve months that regardless of the outcome of this election this year has been all about the woman. And last night’s line-up of recipients, which included Condoleezza Rice, Tyra Banks, Maureen Chiquet (the woman who heads Chanel is from Missouri!), Kara Walker, Nicole Kidman, the Nobel Women’s Initiative, Jane Goodall, Najood Ali (the 10 yr old Yemen girl who convinced the courts to give her a divorce from her adult husband), and Hillary Clinton (two standing ovations) was an excellent representation of just that. Also perhaps a reflection of the magazine’s pull, particularly in these tough times (Condi Rice said she’s been reading since she was twelve). Also, Cindi Leive rocked the most amazing shoes of the night, just saying.

-2.jpgThe star-studded event lived up to its glamour moniker (we joked on our way in that security was so tight it felt like the secret service was in the building…turns out they were!) and most of the recipients attended the packed dinner at the Essex House afterward — we spotted Nicole Kidman front and center with hubby Keith Urban, tiny Kate Bosworth floating about, and Harvey Weinstein “dropping in” on our way out. Later this twitter from Julia Allison turned us almost entirely green with envy. After the jump more highlights from the night as well as some vid of Hillary’s, Condi’s, and Tyra’s speeches (all of them mention their mothers). [UPDATE: The video is now working!]

LAT In 90 Seconds

second_thought_220_2.jpgPissed Much, Ken? Within the first few grafs, film critic Kenneth Turan shows his disdain for his (admittedly stupid) task of having to answer whether critics ever second-guess themselves: “Let me explain why I feel that asking critics about what they got wrong, or for that matter what they got right, is to fundamentally misunderstand what it is we do and how we do it.”

40727141.jpgChilling Sentence Of The Day: In this story about a new Gits‘ docu, one of Mia Zapata‘s bandmates, Steve Moriarty says, “It can be pretty awful to have to describe what it was like to go out every night for three months looking for a murderer on your own with a knife and a baseball bat, which is what I did.”

40754044-07100117.jpgWelcome Sunday Rose: Nicole Kidman gave birth to a daughter this morning. Congratulations. Here’s hoping Nicole will be able to work off the remaining 3 ounces of baby weight.
