THR Deals Into Hollywood’s High-Stakes Poker Game Scene

“Competition, power and ego.” That’s the mix Hollywood Reporter writers Daniel Miller and Kim Masters suggest is at the center of Hollywood’s Texas hold ‘em no-limit private poker tables. A familiar Tinseltown cocktail, to be sure.

Perched at the very top of the scene’s four-suit totem pole is Spider-Man himself, Tobey Maguire. His is one of two celebrity names being actively floated around within some nasty litigation pertaining to Ponzi poker winnings, along with that of Nick Cassavetes. FishbowlLA’s favorite portion of the article is a truncated passage that hints at a world of accidental privilege that very few of us will ever get to witness, let alone experience:

The trouble began one day in summer 2006 when a hedge fund manager named Bradley Ruderman wandered off of exclusive Carbon Beach in Malibu and talked his way into the game…

Revisiting That Bumble Ward Interview

Now that 20th Century Fox has confirmed last week’s Mike Fleming Deadline.com scoop about Bumble Ward coming out of retirement to head up the studio’s national film publicity department, it’s worth revisiting an interview she gave to Kim Masters in 2005.

Although Ward’s LA Times phoner echoed sentiments captured in a fall 2002 New Yorker mini-profile by Tad Friend, she still managed to rankle the godfather of LA show business PR, the late Warren Cowan. Per Cowan’s response in the same newspaper five days later:

Ward’s saying that she can count on “one hand” the number of great people in PR came as a shock to me. I know hundreds of outstanding people in the PR field… I am sorry that Ward was not blessed with the feeling of pure joy that I have for an occupation that has brought me a lifetime of enjoyment.

Fear and Loathing Behind the Scenes at The Walking Dead?

AMC may have some of the best programming on TV, but it’s definitely going through some growing pains. First, Mad Men’s fifth season was delayed over haggling between the network and the show’s creator Matthew Weiner. Then Breaking Bad, for reasons that still seem odd, was given a yearlong reprieve between its third and fourth seasons. Now The Walking Dead‘s showrunner Frank Darabont has been unceremoniously given the boot. What’s going on?

An anonymous source tells the Hollywood Reporter‘s Kim Masters that “AMC has been “terrorizing” [actors] and their representatives to discourage them from speaking out on Darabont’s behalf.” Adds another insider: “They’re scared. They’re on a zombie show. They are all really easy to kill off.”

Seems like an odd way for a network to treat its highest rated show.

Hollywood Reporter Responds to Sharon Waxman Accusations

Last Friday afternoon, Sharon Waxman made like Nikki Finke and accused a Hollywood trade rival of failing to properly credit her website’s scoops. Except in this case, rather than it being a matter of Deadline.com vs. TheWrap, it was all about TheWrap vs. The Hollywood Reporter.

Waxman alleges that four recent TheWrap “exclusives” about Universal Motown Records, Comcast, Relativity Media, and Epic Records were subsequently picked up without a courtesy link by, respectively, THR reporters Shirley Halperin, George Szalai, Kim Masters, and (again) Halperin. Waxman was bylined on both the Comcast and Relativity Media pieces and says that as a result, she emailed THR executive editor Owen Phillips to complain about the lack in those two instances of a link back to TheWrap.

Innocent Hilary Swank Remark Sparks Tempest in KCRW Teapot

After a harmless Hilary Swank interview remark made by Kim Masters on Monday’s edition of KCRW-FM program The Business, the sound bite was picked up Tuesday by EW and TMZ, continuing on today via CNN.com. Each of these reports skipped over the part where Masters quickly apologized, acknowledging that her observation that Swank and Meryl Streep are not “pretty girl”-like came out wrong.

But that’s enough for an Internet news trail. Would you believe that TMZ got 200,000 clicks in a poll asking readers to rank the relative horizontal hotness of Masters and Swank?

Daily Beast: Former Scientologist Deconstructs Alley’s New Diet Products

kirsty.png
Kim Masters talked to a former Scientologist to asked if Kirstie Alley‘s “non-Scientology” Scientology weight-loss program is in anyway related to Scientology.

Scientologists are always so open and candid about everything they do. Can’t imagine why the press is calling Alley out on this whopper.

Sorry for the pun…ahem.

Kim Masters Confirms Conan is Out at NBC

Kim Masters writes on The Daily Beast:

The NBC-Leno-Conan war is close to ending, according to a knowledgeable source. According to the outlines of a settlement, Conan O’Brien will leave NBC and the network will make an as-yet unspecified payment. The comedian will be free to appear elsewhere on television well before his contract expires, despite earlier threats from NBC that it would prevent him from working anywhere else.

There is still opportunity for the negotiation to fall apart, but clearly, at this point it is in NBC’s interest to put an end to this dismal episode.

Hm. What nobody has brought up yet is that NBC is fourth-place these days. Fourth. They’re getting brutalized by – wait for it – Fox in the number one spot. So, NBC, like the current Republicans out of power and the Democrats before them, they’re eating their young. Doing wacky, desperate, Hail Marys to end up back on top. Which is impressive when it works, but super interesting when it doesn’t.

Is Michael Jackson Making Trouble for Bruno?

Bruno-Striptease-Riot-Sacha-Baron-cohen-webcastr.jpg
Kim Masters at Daily Beast reports there is a scene in the new Sacha Baron Cohen movie Bruno with La Toya Jackson and a reported Michael Jackson joke.

Masters writes:

Asked whether the studio will alter the film, a Universal executive yesterday shot back with two words: “Too soon.”

This is after the premier of Bruno at the Mann Chinese Theater where the pop icon’s star was under the red carpet and fans were strangely over on Vine at the wrong Michael Jackson’s star.

UPDATE: That scene was taken out of the film reports EW.

  • Will William Morris and Endeavor Merge?

    emanuel_ari1.jpg
Will giants William Morris and Endeavor become one super agency? The answer is that it’s complicated. And by ‘complicated’ we mean packed full of super rich successful people with super rich successful egos. Entertainment writers love this type of script. It’s a dramity.

Nikki Finke‘s source says that ‘Thursday is the big day’ as to whether this deal will fly.

And Kim Masters over at, The Daily Beast (the same site that the youth from a younger generation who’s totally not like 40 or anything, Meghan McCain has a column at – so you know they have standards) gets into the personalities at work in the deal (spoiler: they’re all Ari Emanuel‘s).

Maybe This Why the Media is Dying

    twittermediadies.png
Last night we read on Twitter that there was a new feed TheMediaisDying. We thought,”Oh, we should do a post about that.” And before we woke up this morning – it was in the NYT, Gawker, AFP, Buzzfeed – just about everywhere.

    From NYT:

Sites like MediaBistro, Gawker and The Poynter Institute’s Romenesko blog have long provided an overview of the comings and goings of the media industry. But since Twitter limits posts to 140 characters, The Media Is Dying sidesteps commentary to deliver the bare minimum – a recent post simply read: “Kim Masters has been let go at NPR.” The feed has even broken a few stories, with reports of layoffs at Adweek and Brandweek posted before they appeared on traditional media sites.

If information is currency and speed compounded interest…that’s why the dinosaurs are going extinct…err broke.

Anyway, @themediaisdying awesome tweets. Love them.
