Former WPIX Weathercaster Chris Knowles Appears on CNN

When last we heard from weather forecaster Chris Knowles he was fired from WPIX in October.

But, a blizzard can’t keep a good meteorologist down.

Today, Knowles was on CNN during American Morning reporting on the aftermath of the megastorm from New Jersey.

It’s uncertain whether this was a one-time appearance for Knowles or if he was auditioning for a larger role at CNN.

Knowles is married to American Morning anchor Kiran Chetry.

Update: Knowles tells FishbowlNY that he also was scheduled to do live weather updates at 10:30  and 11 a.m. this morning.

WPIX Axes Weekend Weathercaster Chris Knowles

There has been a casualty of the newly formatted WPIX newscasts.

Chris Knowles, the WPIX weekend weather anchor, was fired and replaced by Lisa Mateo.  She began her new role on Saturday night.

“WPIX is an organization that has been going through transition and financial reorganization for some time,” Knowles tells FishbowlNY exclusively.

A WPIX spokeswoman tells FishbowlNY that Knowles’ per diem agreement came to end. “He opted to not continue with this on a per diem basis.”

Knowles spent six years at Fox News Channel before joining WPIX in June 2007.

Knowles is married to Kiran Chetry, co-anchor of CNN’s American Morning. The couple met while working at a TV station in Erie, PA.

“I am looking forward to a permanent situation where I can continue to do what I love–anchoring and using my meteorological skills,” Knowles says.

As for Knowles’ replacement, the station spokewoman says, Mateo, who has been going to school for meteorology, will maintain her face time on the PIX Morning News with news and feature reporting three days a week.

The Knowles termination comes as the PIX News at Ten moves into its second week following major changes. Jodi Applegate took over for Jim Watkins and Kaity Tong on the weeknight 10 p.m. newscast. The broadcast originates directly from the newsroom without those TV news staples–desks and chairs.

“I’ve heard from many co-workers who are shaken up over the whole thing, and I really appreciate their reaching out to me,” Knowles says.

Morning Media Menu Live From CNN’s American Morning

mornmm.gifToday on the Menu Steve gets to play roving reporter again (sadly, he was flying solo due to sudden bout of the flu on our end — but he did great!) this time at CNN’s American Morning. Steve was there to chat with co-anchors Kiran Chetry and (newly inducted into the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame) John Roberts (or J.D. Roberts as he was known to us in our formative years).

JohnRoberts_KiranChetry_AM_20070713_01cr.jpgChetry and Roberts are are part of CNN’s week-long special “Road to Rescue” coverage about the economy. “There’s been so much pessimism in the economic coverage that we want to turn things around,” says Roberts. People don’t want to hear just ‘doom and gloom, doom and gloom,’ they want to hear ‘what can you arm me with.’”

On what differentiates them after almost two years on air together Chetry says “It’s less about our opinion, it’s less about chatting…At the end of the day it’s about making sure you’re as informed as possible.”

And for those of you who keep up with these sorts of things at the very end of the interview Steve goes there! Partying With The King

King and his wife flank the Trumps

The short hallway between the “Pool Room” and bar acted as a sort of cosmic, generational media portal last night at the Four Seasons, where a pair of cocktail parties — one celebrating Larry King‘s 50 years in broadcasting (a.k.a the “old people room”), the other celebrating the New York Observer‘s redesigned paper and Web site (a.k.a the “kids room”) — were in full, boozy, media-centric swing.

In the “Old People Room”: King and his television and famous New York pals, like Joan Rivers, Donald and Melania Trump, the View‘s Barbara Walters (at one point Trump and Walters were just feet from each other, but didn’t appear to acknowledge each other) and Joy Behar, Campbell Brown, Mario Cuomo, Lou Dobbs, Phil Donahue and Marlo Thomas, Tina Brown, Jeff Greenfield, Ron Howard, Time Inc. managing editor Jim Kelly, Keith Kelly, Ray Kelly, Oprah B.F.F. Gayle King, Calvin Klein, Time Warner chief Dick Parsons, Sandra Bernhard, Jerry Stiller, Arliss actor Robert Wuhl, Mort Zuckerman, American Morning‘s newly-installed Kiran Chetry, Glenn Beck, Montel Williams, James Carville, Tom Wolfe, Andy Rooney and artist Peter Max, whose colorful rendering of King served as the room’s centerpiece.

In the “Kids Room”: 23-year-old Observer owner Jared Kushner held court with twentysomething bloggers and their youthful bosses, like Gawker’s Choire Sicha, Radar‘s Jeff Bercovici and Maer Roshan, Page Six‘s Corynne Steindler, Slate‘s Jacob Weisberg, Domino‘s Deborah Needleman, WWD‘s Irin Carmon, and HuffPo’s Julia Allison, Katharine Thomson and Rachel Sklar. Fittingly, Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, chose the Observer party over King’s.

CNN Flips American Morning: Soledad, Miles O’Brien Out; John Roberts, Scorned Fox Newser Kiran Chetry In

cnn_american_morning_shuffle_fbny.jpg

Weird 24 hours at CNN. First, a shooting at CNN HQ in Atlanta yesterday, which killed a woman. Then the news that Miles O’Brien and Soledad O’Brien — not married and/or related [above right] — co-hosts of CNN’s American Morning, had been ousted from hosting duties, replaced by CBS vet John Roberts and ex-Fox Newser Kiran Chetry [above left].

Chetry, you’ll recall, was unceremoniously let go by Fox News after a scandalously-failed contract renegotiation, after which Fox leaked a memo blasting Chetry’s agent and inferring Chetry had demanded a spot Fox & Friends, which would’ve required a current host’s firing. Chetry was immediately hired by CNN and filled in for Soledad on American Morning the next day.

TVNewser reports Soledad will become anchor of CNN’s “Special Investigations” unit.

As TVNewser first reported yesterday, Fox News sent a letter to John Ferriter, agent of weekend anchor Kiran Chetry, blasting the pair’s contract demands and severing relations with his client. Fox and Chetry were in the middle of contract renegotiations.

Fox News legal VP Dianne Brandi writes:

You have treated Fox News with such arrogant disregard that we do not desire to do any further business with you. You refused to enter into good faith negotiations despite your client’s statements that she wanted to remain at Fox News and was happy with the renumeration we had offered. You and your client’s unprofessional demand that we include a clause in her new agreement which would have been detrimental to other Fox News talent is simply not the way we conduct business.

What was the demand? A TVNewser source speculates it could’ve had something to do with Chris Knowles, Chetry’s husband and Fox News weatherman. (Nah, it won’t be too awkward for Knowles in the office or anything. Not at all.)

The letter also stated that Chetry was “free to leave” before her contract expires on March 6.

Well, guess who showed up on CNN this morning filling in for Soledad O’Brien. Kiran Chetry.

No official hiring announcement has been made from CNN.

    UPDATE: It’s official.
