Hollywood Trade #IceBucketChallenge Devolves Into Twitter War

LAObserved got the ball rolling with some media coverage of TheWrap’s August 18 #icebucketchallenge and the admittedly funny visual of site founder Sharon Waxman seeming not to get wet while underlings to her left and right did.

However, as Waxman subsequently tweeted – and LAObserved’s Kevin Roderick updated – she did in fact sustain collateral ice-cube damage. The lack of an SW torrent was the result of TheWrap’s decision to opt, in drought-stricken SoCal, for the most optimally water-supply-friendly route.

But it is on Twitter where the real cold water was poured on TheWrap. After TheWrap senior film reporter Jeff Sneider did not take kindly to the LAObserved coverage, he got into it with David Poland (Movie City News) and Kristopher Tapley (HitFix/In Contention), both of whom with Poland harshly criticizing the above video. [Editor's Note: Tapley has taken exception with my characterization; please see comments, below.] Also chiming in more neutrally: Sneider’s former colleague Josh Dickey, now with Mashable, and Wall Street Journal film reporter Joe Flint.

Awards Site InContention.com Finds a New Home

In the wake of the 2010 Hollywood film awards season’s dramatic impact on the box office performance of various contenders, there is renewed value for websites in having as much related ad space to sell as possible.

That’s not to say Kristopher Tapley, founder of InContention.com, is undeserving of today’s announcement of the relocation of his site within the infrastructure of HitFix.com. Rather, it’s just another reminder that from Labor Day to Oscar Day, for mainstream movie websites, it’s a buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz world. Per Tapley, the partnership was sparked at Telluride:

These negotiations began as a feeler email a few weeks back. Greg pitched me his full ideas before the Albert Nobbs screening in Telluride. Less than two weeks later and we’re facing the biggest change the site has ever seen. It’s dizzying, scary, exciting, all wrapped up into one. But I have the utmost faith in the HitFix team and infrastructure. We are in very good hands here.

Carlos, the Awards Season Terrorist

While many LA film journalists scoff privately at the mercenary aspects of the Hollywood Movie Awards, set for Monday, October 25th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, few are willing to state these same opinions publicly. So thank goodness for David Poland.

In a tart take-down of the annual event shared earlier this week, Poland – who once served as an Advisory Board member for the ceremony – marvels at the way Hollywood Film Festival founder Carlos de Abreu (pictured) is able to bilk the studios for talent, sponsored table money and silent subservience.
