Lara Logan Describes Horrors of Sexual Assault on ’60 Minutes’

Sunday night, before the news of Osama bin Laden‘s death was jubilantly announced, CBS correspondent Lara Logan was on “60 Minutes” to describe her horrific sexual assault in Cairo, Egypt. Logan suffered a “sustained beating and sexual assault” in Tahrir Square while preparing a report on the night that Hosni Mubarak’s government fell.

Logan agreed to describe her ordeal once for “60 Minutes,” and her interview is painful to watch, as video footage records Logan’s reporting before the attack, and her terrified scream as she was dragged away. The video from the interview is after the jump.

Logan breaks down while describing the events:

I remember looking up, when my clothes gave way, I remember looking up and seeing them taking pictures with their cell phones, the flashes of their cell phone cameras…I didn’t even know that they were beating me with flagpoles and sticks and things, because I couldn’t even feel that. Because all I could think of was the sexual assault, all I could feel, was their hands raping me over and over and over again, from the front, from the back.

I didn’t know if I could hold onto Ray. I’m holding on to him. I didn’t wanna let go of him. I thought I was gonna die if I lost hold of him.

Lara Logan’s First Interview Since Being Attacked in Egypt

In early February, CBS News Correspondent Lara Logan was sexually assaulted by a mob while covering the uprising in Egypt. Today, for the first time since the incident, she discussed details about the tragedy and the hope that the situation doesn’t end up defining her.

Logan tells the New York Times that the mob overtook her and her crew quickly, and “for an extended period of time, they raped me with their hands.” She explains that as the crowd tore off her clothes, they only became more ruthless:

What really struck me was how merciless they were. They really enjoyed my pain and suffering. It incited them to more violence.

However, somehow through all of the trauma, Logan immediately decided to speak up about what happened, so that it might help other female journalists who have been sexually assaulted come forward.

Nir Rosen Leaves NYU Over Lara Logan Comments

Nir Rosen, a journalist who has written for Time, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, and others, has departed his fellowship at NYU over insensitive Tweets he wrote regarding Lara Logan being sexually assaulted in Egypt.

When the news broke that Logan had been attacked, Rosen fired off a string of tweets that seemed to downplay the severity of the situation. In a reply, he stated, “look, she was probably groped like thousands of other women, which is still wrong, but if it was worse than i’m sorry,” then followed that up with the tweet pictured here.

As time went on, Rosen realized his mistake and apologized repeatedly, but he has since resigned from NYU’s Center on Law and Security.

Regardless of what Rosen thought of the situation, he should’ve known better than to tweet anything inflammatory. For a guy who makes his living with words, he sure chose the wrong ones last night.

UPDATE:
FishbowlDC caught up with Rosen and asked him some questions about the incident.

Lara Logan Was Sexually Assaulted While in Egypt

On February 3rd, Lara Logan and her crew were detained by Egyptian police forces, but it turns out, that wasn’t anywhere near the worst of what she faced while covering the revolution for CBS.

It’s now being reported that in the moments after Hosni Mubarak stepped down, Logan got separated from her crew as the huge mass of people celebrated. She was then was surrounded by a group of people and sexually assaulted and severely beaten, before being saved by some women and Egyptian soldiers.

Logan eventually met back up with her crew, and she is now back in the states at a hospital recovering. FishbowlNY extends positive thoughts to her and her family.

Also, if you do click through to the CBS story, don’t bother to read the comments. We did, and we wish we hadn’t.

Time is reporting that Lara Logan, Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent for CBS News, has been detained by police forces in Egypt.

Logan, along with her crew who were also taken into custody, has been reporting on the revolt since January 31st. Apparently Logan and others were taken by the police just outside of the Israeli Embassy in Cairo.

Today on the media- bistro.com Morning Media Menu podcast, Los Angeles Times reporter Matea Gold joined hosts Jason Boog of GalleyCat and AgencySpy‘s Matt Van Hoven to discuss her recent article about CBS News‘ “60 Minutes.”

“I thought it would be a really fascinating time to take a step back and look at what’s going on inside the show because its creator Don Hewitt passed away last month and he had really been a constant presence there even though he retired in 2004,” Gold explained. “’60 Minutes’ is, in some ways, really an anomaly in our new media universe because its an old media show conceived 41 years ago and it still is one of the few that commands regularly and reliably a mass audience every Sunday. And that is a pretty miraculous thing.”

In fact, the show saw viewership grow 10 percent in last season compared to the year before, growth that Gold attributes to the show’s coverage of Barack Obama and the increasing profile of contributor Steve Kroft.

“They also did a lot of really hard-hitting reporting on the financial crisis and in a lot of ways just hewed closely to the formula that Don Hewitt conceived of, which is a really strong mix of newsy features, investigative pieces and fun, lighter take-offs that I think there’s still a really big audience for in this country,” Gold said.

Gold also discussed the aging audience that all television news shows is facing, although she noted that the audience of “60 Minutes” has actually stayed the same age over the years, and it is a year younger than the average age of the audience that watches the evening network news. “60 Minutes” has also stayed fresh by adding correspondents like Katie Couric, Lara Logan, Anderson Cooper and Byron Pitts.

But is there a future for “60 Minutes” and other shows like it? Opined Gold: “I think if programs like ’60′ can evolve enough to provide their content online in an on-demand format, then viewers who are younger will get to know the brand and consistently turn to them. But, it’s a matter of figuring out an economic model that works for that.”

Also discussed: New York Times columnist William Safire‘s death yesterday and his contribution to language and journalism.

Print Journalism Officially in a Crisis, Or, Put Your Hand in the Hand of Your Strongest Competitor?

Maybe just to make it all official, a recent study was conducted on the effects that recent layoffs and budgets cuts are having on the country’s newsrooms (spoiler alert: it’s bad). The study concluded that newsrooms are smaller despite a greater online need for content, there is less foreign news now than there was three years ago (Lara Logan fans will already be aware of this), and there is even less national news (though as New Yorkers one wonders how long it would take for us to notice this). The good news? Well, there isn’t much except that smaller papers seem to be doing better than larger ones.

Meanwhile, over at AdAge Arthur “Punch” Sulzberger Jr. is talking to Nat Ives about how the New York Times is navigating these treacherous waters. In a word, co-operation. Starting this fall the Times plans on “automatically displaying links to competitors’ takes on big news” on its home page, no less (how very HuffPo) as well as expanding its online business coverage a la Andrew Sorkin‘s DealBook model: “each one will include original reporting and commentary from a dedicated staffer, news aggregated from elsewhere, relevant tools, e-mail newsletters, mobile applications and more.” And while Sulzberger has been the recipient of much criticism of late, particularly after NYT stocks fell to a record ten-year low last week, he has garnered some praise for keeping the Times in the family, “The fecklessness of the Bancrofts reflected that Arthur had sharp values…He may not be a business visionary, but he is stalwart in a way that they were not.”

CBS Chief Foreign Correspondent Makes E-Mail Plea For Network To Air Baghdad Story; Network Calls It ‘Too Graphic For Evening News Audience’

After the CBS Evening News decided not to air a piece on a violent, largely unknown battle in Iraq, opting to put it online instead, CBS chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan recently sent this email to friends and colleagues:

From: lara logan
Subject: help

The story below only appeared on our CBS website and was not aired on CBS. It is a story that is largely being ignored, even though this istakingplace verysingle day in central Baghdad, two blocks from where our office is located.

Our crew had to be pulled out because we got a call saying they were about to be killed, and on their way out, a civilian man was shot dead in front of them as they ran.

I would be very grateful if any of you have a chance to watch this story and pass the link on to as many people you know as possible. It should be seen. And people should know about this.

If anyone has time to send a comment to CBS – about the story – not about my request, then that would help highlight that people are interested and this is not too gruesome to air, but rather too important to ignore.

Many, many thanks.

CBS’ response, via B&C:

According to a spokesperson for CBS News, the executive producer made the decision that some of the video was “too graphic for an evening news audience.”
