Fashionista Adds Two Editors-in-Chief

FashionistaEICsThey’re not officially on board until mid-November, but it’s never too early for a correction. In their brief introductory message on Fashionista, incoming EICs Lauren Indvik and Stephanie Trong (pictured l to r) let WWD know about a slight error:

It should be noted that WWD incorrectly reported that we are owned by Say Media. Though we love Say Media, we are a happy part of the Breaking Media family.

Indvik will be coming to Fashionista from Mashable, where she was an associate business editor covering retail, media and technology. Trong meanwhile has an even more impressive background. She was formerly executive editor at both Jane and NYLON magazines, as well as the deputy editor at Lucky magazine and editorial director at Gilt Groupe. She also helped oversee the expansion of The Cut at NYMag.com.

Amy Odell Named Editor of Cosmopolitan.com, Leah Chernikoff Editor of Elle.com

Well, that was fast. Hours after we learned that Amina Akhtar, Elle.com’s executive editor, and Abby Gardner, digital director of Cosmopolitan, were let go, Hearst has named their replacements. Amy Odell has been named editor of Cosompolitan.com and Leah Chernikoff editor of Elle.com.

Odell comes to Cosmo from BuzzFeed, where she had been since February 2012. Prior to joining BuzzFeed, she was the founding editor of a writer for New York’s blog The Cut.

Chernikoff most recently served as editorial director of Fashionista.com. Before that she was a features reporter for The New York Daily News, from 2007 to 2010.

[Editor's note: There has been a bit of a dustup over who exactly founded The Cut. Akhtar insists she was, not Odell. Odell says she was, not Akhtar. Yeah! See below for our Twitter conversation. I'm leaving this post as is until I get official word back from New York. Apologies for the confusion.]

Cindi Leive Walks Fashionista.com Through a September Issue

Leah Chernikoff has put together a fun breakdown about what goes into to the critical annual September issue of Glamour.

EIC Cindi Leive tells the Fashionista editorial director that work begins on the issue pretty much right after September of the previous year. Discussions to get proven cover girl Jennifer Aniston on the front of September 2013 began a little later, in January. Leive says that reality TV, social media and even things like the 2009 documentary The September Issue have all helped raise the PR profile of Month #9:

“I think the average woman, the average magazine reader understands that the September issue is a big deal,” Leive says. “The fact that people are tweeting at me, ‘Who’s going to be on the cover of your September issue?’ That level of hunger would not have existed five years ago.”
