Fox 5/WNYW Sends Dr. Oz to 4 p.m. Looking to Grab Oprah’s Audience

With Oprah Winfrey set to sail off into cable TV full time next week, some stations are looking to fill the void left by her 25 legendary years.

Fox 5/WNYW had an easy decision–move Dr. (Mehmet) Oz to 4 p.m. beginning Thursday.

“There’s no other show that was a possibility,” Lew Leone, WNYW VP/GM, tells FishbowlNY. “It’s a 4 o’clock show.”

But since Oz’s show is produced by Winfrey’s Harpo team, their hands were tied contractually from moving it–until she walked away from over-the-air TV.

Co-Anchor Harry Martin Calls WWOR Bringing News Back to 10 p.m a ‘Great Opportunity’

After two years, My9/WWOR is returning to its longstanding 10 p.m. news slot, The Ten O’Clock News beginning June 27. WWOR had moved its evening newscast to 11 p.m. and sliced it to 30 minutes.

Now the veteran news team consisting of anchors Harry Martin and Brenda Blackmon, meteorologist Audrey Puente, and Russ Salzberg on sports get the earlier start. The broadcast remains at 30 minutes, half the length of the original Channel 9 10 p.m. newscast.

“I think it’s a great opportunity,” Martin tells FishbowlNY. “Lew Leone, our general manger, said there’s an audience that really wants to watch us at that time.”

WPIX News Director Bill Carey Says Station ‘Blew Through Our Own Estimates’ With Transformation at 10 p.m.

After recently reporting changes to the WPIX sports department and other measures, FishbowlNY now sheds light on what news director Bill Carey sees as important innovative steps to improve the standing of his operation.

As you’ll recall, Channel 11 underwent a new 10 p.m. look on October 11, bringing in Jodi Applegate, late from News 12 Long Island.

The tandem of Kaity Tong and Jim Watkins was relocated. Tong still has roots on the weeknight newscast, but “anchoring” portions from remote locations in Brooklyn or Queens. Watkins anchors four newscasts, but he has been relegated to weekends.

As we told you last week, the sports section of WPIX is no more, other than Applegate reading a few scores (the no-frills graphic is a throwback to the Jerry Girard days).

With the station about to mark the pivotal six-month period, FishbowlNY spoke to Carey for his examination of the product and the all-important ratings.

My9 and Yankees Together Again This Season

The Yankees are returning to My9/WWOR for a seventh consecutive season. Yankee fans will see their beloved pinstripers 21 times in 2011 on WWOR.

“My9 is proud to be the long-standing broadcast home of the New York Yankees,” Lew Leone, WWOR general manager, said.  “We enjoy a great partnership with the YES Network and look forward to presenting this year’s terrific slate of games to the number one television market.”

Among the notable games, on May 20, the Yankees host the Mets. My9 also gets a pair of Yankees/Red Sox matchups in June, and one at Fenway Park in August.

“We are once again pleased to partner with My9, one of the country’s largest broadcast stations, to bring these 21 Yankees games to our viewers and advertisers,” said Michael Wach, executive vice president, global partnerships, YES Network.  “Yankees telecasts offer advertisers an extremely valuable promotional platform, and this year’s edition of the Yankees is expected to once again provide fans with plenty of engaging action.”
