In spirit at least, in the form of the feature documentary Plimpton! Starring George Plimpton as Himself!
The movie screens tonight at the Coolidge Corner Cinema in Brookline, and as WBUR’s Andrea Shea’s interview with the two filmmakers reminds, there’s no better karmic city for this tribute to the great author and journalist than Boston:
“This is the home of two of the teams that George played for,” Luke Poling explained. “He would be the answer to the Jeopardy question of: Who’s the only person to have played with the Bruins and the Celtics?”
Playing goalie for the Bruins is just one example of George Plimpton’s many “amateur intrusions.” As a Sports Illustrated correspondent, he took that old journalist joke about “being an expert for a day” to the extreme and turned his escapades into best-selling books. Poling first discovered Plimpton when he read the writer’s Bruins’ chronicle, Open Net.
