Bravo’s Andy Cohen Eyes Madonna, Michelle Obama

As Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live celebrates five years, the numbers are better than ever.

Per a Q&A with show star Andy Cohen by Hollywood Reporter TV editor Lacey Rose, the program this year is up five percent compared to the same period last year with a weekly viewership of 997,000.

When asked who is at the top of his guest wish-list, Cohen came up with four immediate answers:

“I love music people. I’d love Beyonce or Justin Timberlake. I’d still love Madonna, and I think that’ll happen.”

“The best guests for me are people who I’m actually a big fan of and very invested in. And we’re working on the first lady, too. She and I spoke about it, and she said, “I think that’s a thing we could do later in Barack’s second term.” I loved that answer because what that said to me is, when she comes, she’s going to go for it.”

Alamo Drafthouse Still Waiting for Madonna Apology

Shutterstock_MadonnaMadonna is going to remember The Alamo Drafthouse for a very long time.

Since the pop diva chose to text on her Blackberry throughout the first half of the New York Film Festival October 8 premiere of 12 Years a Slave, all manner of media hell has broken loose. Sparked by a Facebook post from film critic Charles Taylor about her rude Lincoln Center behavior.

We’ve confirmed with a rep for the Alamo chain that per CEO/founder Tim League‘s tweet that she would be as a result banned from all Alamo locations unless she apologized (a joke that he is now standing more firmly behind), Madonna has not at press time contacted the theater chain. As far as the ensuing, exploding media coverage of The Blackberry Girl’s Lincoln Center transgressions, one of our favorites items is Toby Young‘s op-ed in London’s Telegraph:

I’m so hysterical about it [objecting to people being anti-social in movie theaters] – so shouty and aggressive – that my wife refuses to go to the cinema with me. She would far rather turn a blind eye to the disturbance than endure the torture of sitting next to me when I explode with indignant rage because the person two rows in front is eating their popcorn too loudly.

Fans Set to Download Madonna at Midnight

A trailer for Madonna‘s secretprojectrevolution went up on YouTube a few weeks ago and has racked up several hundred thousand views. But chances are the full 17-minute version of the film being teased, co-directed with Steven Klein, will generate a lot more Internet activity.

The short spearheads Art For Freedom, a global digital freedom-of-expression initiative led by the singer in partnership with VICE. Starting at midnight ET tonight, secretprojectrevolution will be available for free download at BitTorrent.

One Night Only: Madonna at Macy’s

Actually, Madonna herself won’t be at Macy’s Westfield Century City, Main Floor, Level 1 tomorrow night from 6 to 8 p.m. But fans can still count on seeing eight of the singer’s most iconic outfits and saying hi to the superstar’s longtime costume collaborator Arianne Phillips. It’s all part of a special one-night-only pop-up event titled “Madonna’s Fashion Evolution.”

The Macy’s connection comes from the fact that the singer has for several years been selling through the department store chain a “Material Girl” clothing line designed with daughter Lola. The corresponding Twitter account @MaterialGirl currently has more than 80,000 followers. From the announcement:

Madonna personally handpicked eight of her favorite costumes from a vast archive of tour costumes and her personal collection for the exhibition. The cone bustiers were flown in from a Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit in Amsterdam, her “Like A Virgin” wedding dress is on loan from the Hard Rock Cafe, while the remaining items are from Madonna’s personal archives.

Rolling Stone Restaurant Makes Reviewer Queasy

Under the perversely brilliant headline mention of “Beer and Loathing,” LA Weekly writer Drew Tewksbury today puts another nail in the PR coffin of the Hollywood and Highland Center. At least from the perspective of locals, who prefer to stay a Grove-mile away.

While he acknowledges that the restaurant serves “the best mall food” he’s ever had, he mourns the bigger-picture meaning of a Rolling Stone eateries chain (a second location is planned in New York). For a magazine caught in the cross hairs of both a music industry and print media downturn, spinning off themed restaurant grub is in keeping with putting George Clooney on the latest cover. Tewksbury concludes:

How far can a brand be stretched before it breaks? Maybe Rolling Stone is already broken. When does a brand lose its meaning, as its logo no longer represents the spirit that spawned it.

Pharrell Williams Joins Oscars as Music Consultant

Can it be? Are The Oscars actually making an attempt to attract a younger, diverse audience?

Rapper/producer Pharrell Williams is joining the 84th Academy Awards as a music consultant with Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer.

Williams is the lead singer of the rap group N.E.R.D. and has produced the likes of Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Snoop Dogg and Jay-Z.

Zimmer needs no introduction as he’s composed music for over 100 films including The Lion King and The Dark Knight.

“I am honored to work with my mentor and teacher, Hans Zimmer, and I have wanted to collaborate with Brian Grazer on something for years,” Williams said in a statement. “I cannot believe I will be joining them and their teams on the most prestigious show of the year, the Academy Awards.”

Ken Regan Recalls Madonna Photo Shoot

Get ready to hear a lot about All Access: The Rock ‘n’ Roll Photography of Ken Regan, a brand new must-have coffee table book with a forward written by Keith Richards.

Sixteen photos from the October 18 release are being teased this week at RollingStone.com, while New York based Canadian newspaper correspondent Marie-Joelle Parent has posted a seductive lead-in to her forthcoming interview with Regan. In her piece, Parent reveals Regan’s all-time favorite photo (of Bob Dylan) and excerpts his memorable recollection of a Material Girl LA moment:

“I arrived at four a.m. and checked into the Mondrian hotel… As the elevator doors were closing, I lunged to open them and get in. Inside the car, judging by her trashy/chic style, was what I thought to be someone resembling a hooker. She got off on my floor and went to the end of the hallway. I went the other way.”

LA Times Chronicles City’s Other Celebrity-Endorsed Religion

Though coincidental, the timing of an excellent two-part LA Times series on LA’s Kabbalah Centre seems almost anti-spiritual, given the current marital troubles reportedly enshrouding Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore. In happier times, they were wed by a Kabbalah teacher.

In Part Two of the investigation, reporters Harriet Ryan and Kim Christensen focus on an aspect that is as critical for religious success in LA as it is for ascension in the movie, TV and sex tape businesses. The celebrity factor:

The first celebrity drawn to the Kabbalah Centre was Sandra Bernhard, who began studying in 1995… She dove into kabbalah classes with a charismatic Israeli teacher, Eitan Yardeni. She was effusive in the media about kabbalah, which she said had eliminated “at least 80% of the chaos in my life.” In her Hollywood circle, she was a one-woman marketing campaign for Yardeni and the center.

Up for Bid: Marlon Brando’s Personal Phone Book

According to the old adage, Hollywood’s greatest actors are ones who can triumph even if the script is a phone book. In Marlon Brando‘s case, Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills has the next best thing this weekend – the late actor’s actual personal phone book.

The starting bid for this item is $500, and while many of the numbers may no longer be in service, it’s still a great dinner party conversation starter:

A burgundy leather three-ring binder telephone book circa 2003 containing hundreds of Brando’s personal friends and business contacts worldwide. Some names include Michael Jackson, Johnny Depp, Alec Baldwin, Johnnie Cochran, Francis Ford Coppola, Robert De Niro, Jane Goodall, Faye Dunaway, Jane Fonda, Madonna, Jack Nicholson, Robert Redford, John Travolta, Barbra Streisand as well as noted scientists in various fields of study, press contacts and the United Nations and many other noteable entries.

If that’s not good enough, you can also bid this weekend on a Golden Globe the actor refused to accept for his portrayal of Don Corleone in The Godfather.

LA Newsstand Owner: Material Girl Still Tops

A year after Hershey Weisman‘s family took ownership in 1976 of the massive World Book and News newsstand on the southeast corner of Hollywood and Cahuenga Blvd. (pictured), a certain aspiring singer moved to New York City and got a job waitressing at Dunkin’ Donuts. Thirty-four years later, says Weisman, she remains his best guarantee of brisk magazine sales.

Madonna will always and forever be a top seller,” Weisman tells FishbowlLA via email interview. “Put her on the cover of Scientific American and I will sell more copies of that issue than I have sold in 30 years of Scientific American combined. No one even comes close to her ongoing appeal.”

Amazingly, Weisman’s expansive newsstand has been open 24 hours a day ever since his parents took it over from the family that had previously operated it since 1936. Its location in the heart of Johnny Grant‘s old stomping ground has led to various brushes with celebrity.
