Vanity Fair Scouting for New Oscar Party Location

ShutterstockSofiaVergaraVF2012Nice lede from E!’s Marc Malkin. He writes:

Perhaps throwing a party for Hollywood’s biggest stars in a parking lot wasn’t such a good idea after all.

Vanity Fair confirms to Malkin that indeed, after a year in the main parking lot of Sunset Plaza, publication event staff – per Graydon Carter‘s directive – are evaluating new locations for next year’s star-studded bash. However, a spokesperson was equally quick to clarify that despite what Malkin had heard, the embattled Beverly Hills Hotel has not been visited as part of this process.

Glamour Follows Katie Holmes with Olivia Wilde

One sure sign of an effectively presented women’s magazine cover story is to find people still talking and-or writing about it four weeks later. Score one in that department for Glamour‘s August 2014 issue.

The magazine went with three different covers of Katie Holmes, including the strategically topless shot above. The actress told E!’s Marc Malkin this weekend that the photo “wasn’t about being sexy. It was about being a woman.”

Marc Malkin Disputes THR’s Kristen Stewart-Snow White Item*

Just a few hours tonight after Kim Masters and Borys Kit filed a story for The Hollywood Reporter indicating that Kristen Stewart has been dropped from Universal’s Snow White and the Hunstman sequel plans, Marc Malkin over at E! News begs to differ.

Tying to an earlier item he wrote about Stewart in late May, Malkin insists the actress was never contractually committed to a SWATH sequel. Therefore, he argues, she cannot be “dropped” from the nascent follow-up:

Contrary to a report, Stewart has not been dropped from Universal’s planned Snow White and the Huntsman sequel because the concept is being retooled to focus on Chris Hemsworth’s Huntsman.

Rather, she was never officially attached to one to begin with. (And, for that matter, neither is Hemsworth, as yet.) What’s true is that a new writer is being brought in to replace the first film’s scribe, David Koepp, sources confirmed to E! News Tuesday.

Ted Casablanca Bids Adieu to E!

The door has closed on a Hollywood gossip institution.

After many years at the helm of column “The Awful Truth,” Ted Casablanca (a.k.a. Bruce Bibby) announced last Thursday, right after Independence Day, that he was moving on from E! Online. This morning’s pick-up by TheWrap’s media reporter Lucas Shaw was the first we’d heard of it. From Casablanca’s farewell note:

When I first took this job at E! – in 1996, when the network founded E! Online – I was working at the established and respected Premiere magazine. Scores of people told me, “Online just isn’t the place to go.”

Everybody told me to pass on the job, and so I did. Then I called back the next day and an amazing man named Lew Harris said, yes, of course, I could change my mind. And I did.

Getting to the Bottom of Freida Pinto’s ‘Butt Double’

A few days ago, E! Online columnist Marc Malkin had a fun item about actress Freida Pinto admitting to using a “butt double” for a love scene in the new historical drama The Immortals. The revelation sparked a trail of additional media coverage, including mention during an Ellen interview.

Realizing that this topic usually gets the bum’s rush from investigative journalists, FishbowlLA decided to check in with SAG’s director of background actors, Terri Becherer, and director of theatrical-TV contracts, Elizabeth Moseley, to find out more.

First off, the next time you snicker at the idea of a body double, consider that the current SAG daily minimum for principal work of this nature is $825. Even the lesser, “special ability background” variety pays $152.

E! Online Columnist Gets Kara DioGuardi Scoop

Late yesterday afternoon, E! Online columnist Marc Malkin got the jump on his media colleagues with some sensational excerpts from former American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi‘s new autobiography A Helluva High Note: Surviving Life, Love, and American Idol, due for release a week from today from the Harper Collins imprint It Books.

She details an incident of childhood molestation, at age 11, by a family friend’s son and two more traumatic experiences as an adult: a date rape at the hands of a “fairly known producer” around the year 2000 and extended sexual harassment while working at a suburban location with a “hugely successful artist.”

Grammy Gossip Fest

Saturday night found everyone but a hung-over indisposed Justin Timberlake at Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy bash, Jennifer Hudson was in full voice, as were The Blackeyed Peas and Smokey Robinson. Davis, known for speechifying to the max, dedicated the evening to Ahmet Ertegun.

Maria Villar, the other resident of Franklin Avenue, was nominated for a Grammy for her design of Rhino’s boxed set, Girl Group Sounds Lost and Found. She didn’t win, but she looked hot.

Marc Malkin thinks Jessica Simpson and John Mayer are an item. Ryan Seacrest asked Mayer directly, and got an answer in Japanese. Or maybe an order for Nobu to go.

The Envelope’s Jeff Miller sorts best, worst and who cares? moments. In no particular order: Police reunite, Joan Baez compares Dixie Chicks to Woody Guthrie and Carrie Underwood thanks Simon Cowell after her folks and the supreme deity.
