Steve Mason Reveals HBO Star’s ‘Pocket Personality’

Today at lunchtime, a memorable pair of anecdotes were shared on 710 ESPN Radio by John Ireland and Steve Mason, chatting on the crossover with Mychal Thompson and Mark Willard.

First, Ireland recalled how he and Mason once owned a horse that started out well but then became a loss leader. They wanted to call the horse Pocket Personality, but the name was taken and they settled instead for Phone Abroad.

Mason meanwhile explained that when he worked on The Late, Late Radio Show with Tom Snyder and Steve Mason, he once asked an absolute knockout of a female guest why she was dating a certain celeb. She admitted it was because he had “pocket personality,” e.g. his wallet was the overriding attraction. Mason promised to share the details on Twitter, only, and did.

Max and Marcellus Moving to Drive Time

ESPN 710AM  is reshuffling their radio lineup starting next week when the Max and Marcellus show moves to the drive time slot of 3-7 p.m. and Mason and Ireland moves to noon-3 p.m.

Hosted by Max Kellerman and Marcellus WileyMax and Marcellus is moving to a later time slot in order to accommodate Wiley’s new job as co-host of ESPN’s SportsNation next year, according to Tom Hoffarth of the Daily News. The show is making the move to Los Angeles from ESPN’s headquarters in Bristol, Conn. Wiley will replace Colin Cowherd, who is leaving the show on Dec. 31.

To fill the morning void, Mark Willard will get his own show from 10 a.m.-noon.

ESPN LA Radio Host Pays Emotional Tribute to Former Chargers Teammate Junior Seau

Suicide is a brutal act for close friends and family to comprehend, especially when the person choosing to end their life does not leave behind any explanation. According to early reports, that is apparently the case with former USC great, San Diego Charger and perennial NFL Pro Bowler Junior Seau, found today by police at his home in Oceanside.

For 710 ESPN radio host Marcellus Wiley, a 2001-02 Chargers teammate of Seau’s, it has been an especially devastating piece of news. He last saw Seau in November, and during this very emotional appearance on Sports Center, Wiley explained that at first he couldn’t quite believe the news, scanning the Internet for a retraction and even texting Seau directly:

Bloomberg Businessweek Profiles Hollywood’s Go-to DC Guy

There’s an intriguing article in the new issue of Bloomberg Businessweek, hitting newsstands today. Written by Robert Schmidt, it’s all about Steven Ross, head of Washington organization The Artists & Athletes Alliance, which helps A-listers navigate Washington attractions and the halls of government.

He’s arranged a special tour of the  National Gallery for Will Ferrell and family; gotten Foo Fighters frontman David Grohl and daughter into the Smithsonian. He also comes to LA every one in a while for some no-press-allowed outreach at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills:

An event in April featured Philippe Cousteau, who discussed the one-year anniversary of the Gulf oil spill and the environmental consequences from the Japanese disaster. Attendees included two actors from the CSI television shows, Jorja Fox and Omar Benson Miller, as well as former NFL player Marcellus Wiley.
