NPR Reorganizes Executive Structure

NPR has developed a new executive structure that it hopes will allow closer coordination of its news, digital and programming strategies and a greater alignment of its news operations.

This has translated into the promotion of Kinsey Wilson to the new role of executive vice president and chief content officer. He will set the direction and oversee the operations for all content areas: news, programming and digital media. Margaret Low Smith will permanently lead NPR News as senior vice president, a position she has been acting in since January 2011. These changes are effective immediately.

“This is a time of great opportunity for NPR and our Member stations,” says CEO Gary Knell. “In Kinsey and Margaret, we have two journalists, strategists and leaders with a keen understanding of the craft that distinguishes NPR – and how we must continue to innovate and evolve. Our collective aim is to work with stations to become an unrivaled leader in news and cultural coverage that reaches all Americans, no matter how they tune in.”

NPR Shuffles Its Executive Staff

NPR’s Kinsey Wilson just got a major promotion. It was announced today that Wilson will be NPR’s new executive vice president and chief content officer, in charge of shaping the direction of all NPR news, programming and digital media content. Wilson has been a digital innovation guru of sorts at NPR since his arrival in 2008. He headed the efforts to develop the radio network’s web and mobile platforms.

Meanwhile, Margaret Low Smith has been formally named senior vice president of NPR News, where she had been serving in acting capacity since January of 2011. Smith oversees the daily operations of NPR’s news staff of around 400.

Eric Nuzum was also formally named acting vice president for programming, a position he too has held on an interim basis since January 2011.
