LA Press Club’s Bad Mother Book Party

Silverlake’s El Chavito bar was packed Wednesday night with literary types, all there to celebrate journalist Nancy Rommelmann‘s debut novel, The Bad Mother, which centers around the lives of Hollywood street kids. Rommelmann now lives in Portland, but she put in nearly two decades as an Angeleno, has written for the LA Times and LA Weekly, and remains a contributor to the LA Observed website. A book trailer for The Bad Mother can be viewed here.

American Idol beat reporter Richard Rushfield, Nancy Rommelmann, and David Rensin

Mark Ebner Scientology Expose Helps Kick Off TheFix.com

Today marks the official launch of TheFix.com, a new content site aimed at recovering drug and alcohol users. Though based in New York, its most arresting piece of initial coverage comes courtesy of Mark Ebner, the LA author and journalist normally parked at HollywoodInterrupted.com.

Together with Walter Armstrong (and researcher James Patridge), Ebner has uncorked a lengthy look at the Church of Scientology’s Narconon detox program. The six-page online investigation, a must-read for anyone who likes to follow the fortunes of Scientology, wastes no time getting to an exclusive interview with David Love, a Canadian who took the treatment in 2008-09:

“When I was at Narconon, people were taken away in ambulances and had to spend days in the hospital,” said Love… “People have died in the Quebec facility… Addicts with substance abuse problems have liver problems and high enzyme counts–they should in no way be taking massive amounts of vitamins like Niacin.”

Richard Rushfield’s Book Party

RRandRR.jpg

Richard Rushfield‘s book party was in a swanky English pub downtown. The kind of place where the shepherd’s pie is served with a baby green salad in a tangy vinaigrette.

Anyway, the place was packed for the release party of Rushfield’s college memoir “Don’t Follow Me, I’m Lost.” And yes, in keeping with the theme of the book, we had trouble finding the place.

Pictured above is Gawker editor and author Richard Rushfield and Love Junkie author Rachel Resnick.

Muckraker Ebner Kicking Salomon Scum Off His Boots

ebner.gifHollywood muckraker extraordinaire Mark Ebner is getting it on with subject/socialite/womanizer Rick “Scum” Salomon, the blogger tells FBLA.

salomon.jpgSalomon, who is best known for stripping down with Paris Hilton in a fun(?) porn romp that lit up downloading geeky computer screens around the world, wants to sue Ebner for some of his, shall we say, disclosures regarding a Las Vegas associate Darnell Riley (See, at right).

This is all in anticipation of Ebner’s upcoming book, “Six Degrees of Paris Hilton.”

Book, which comes out in early February will have the usual Ebner scoops that will no doubt piss off both Salomon and, of course, Paris.

Ruffalo Shooter A Princess In Training: Ebner Blog

ruffshooter.jpgThe shooting of Mark Ruffalo‘s brother last week in Beverly Hills is inordinately shocking to be sure, but leave it to HollywoodInterrupted.com blogger Mark Ebner to unearth some even more shocking info.

Ebner discovered the story behind the story of Shaha Adham, who is being accused of the murder, just a day after Ruffalo passed away. He calls her a “dime-a-dozen Saudi princess.”

“Shaha always had a bodyguard posted outside of our classroom,” says a former classmate from the prestigious Marlborough School in Los Angeles.

Coincidentally, the alleged shooter is the younger sister of Bel Air oil heir Brandon Davis‘ former princess- girlfriend, Sharifa Adham.

Leave it to Ebner to find the juice.

Tom Cruise in Scientology Video–We Are the Way to Happiness

Tom Cruise explains it all for you–9 minutes worth. Here’s hoping that SP’s don’t blast this off the site.

Irrepressible scallywag Mark Ebner has those cult videos so craved by internet addicts. Well, kinda. He’s got the descriptions, as the actual videos vanished into the ethernet, as the NYDN explains.

Here’s a Glossary, for those who don’t speak wacko:

KSW (short for Keeping Scientology Working): A policy written by Hubbard in the 1960′s that requires all Scientologists to follow his words and his rules exactly.

Orgs: organizations, i.e., all churches of Scientology throughout the world.

David Miscavige: current leader of Scientology.

Out-ethics: any behavior that violates any of Hubbard’s rules of conduct.

Put ethics in on someone else: make others conform
to Hubbard’s rules of behavior.

Criminon: Scientology front group that tries to recruit through the prisons.

SP: Suppressive Person. Anyone that doesn’t like Scientology and/or criticizes Scientology.

PTS/SP: Hubbard term to define behavior that goes against Scientology rules.

LRH technology or “tech”: all the Scientology policies, rules, mandates, procedures.

FBLA 20 Questions:Mark Ebner

me-reunion.jpg

Journalist Mark Ebner has investigated Scientology, pit bull fighting in South Central Los Angeles, the Ku Klux Klan in Texas, celebrity stalkers, missing porn stars, sports groupies, college suicides and Hepatitis C in Hollywood. He’s got a book deal with Simon & Schuster and a tv deal with Court TV. Despite his busy blog, he yielded to our muscle and answered those deceptively duplicitous questions.

1. What’s the first thing(s) you read in the morning? The cereal box.

2. What’s your favorite guilty pleasure website? Gallery of The Absurd The artist known as “14″ is a genius, and twice the woman of the LA Weekly’s “Seven.”

3. What job do you fantasize about having? Sidewalk Sign Flipper.

4. Last movie you saw? In The Valley of Elah. Surprisingly, Paul Haggis can actually make a good film and, not surprisingly, Tommy Lee Jones can act. Too bad few will see this film until they’re reminded to around Oscar acting awards time.

5. Last book you read? Aftermath, Inc. Cleaning Up After CSI Goes Home — a fascinating participatory adventure in the nasty business of bioremediation by crime writer Gil Reavill. The author takes the Discovery Channel’s conceptualization of “Dirty Jobs” to a whole new level.

6. Best show legendary biz/movie star encounter. In 1985, I spent a night sniffling, shaking and watching bad movies with Liza Minnelli at a resort in the Land of Ten Thousand Rehabs.

7. Proudest media moment? I have three:

Accepting the Genesis Award (for humane reporting) for Pit Bullies
(New Times, 1996); appearing as a guest on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart to promote Hollywood,Interrupted and hearing that South Park’s infamous Trapped In The Closet episode (the Scientology expose I consulted on) was nominated for an Emmy award.

Mark Ebner Flushes Out Eric Red’s Flack, Gets Paul Cullum Involved

Eric.jpg

Mark Ebner has a curious ability to stir up trouble without even trying. Posting on Hollywood Interruped about The Hitcher screenwriter Eric Red’s reaction to Paul Cullum’s LA Weekly piece about Red’s car crash, hospitalization, subsequent lawsuits, and screenplays, , he gets an email from Red’s publicist. Red’s mother-in-law’s a partner in Casey Sayre and Williams, which obviously comes in handy.

The publicist writes:

We speculate, for good reason, that Paul Cullum was paid (outside the LA Weekly) to write the story–he has been stalking Mr. Red for more than 20 years and the plaintiffs used that to their advantage knowing that Mr. Cullum would relish getting close to my client.
