New Jersey’s The Record Grabs Global Editor from The New York Times

The second largest newspaper in New Jersey — The Record — has hired Martin Gottlieb, Global Editions Editor of The New York Times for the past three years, as its new Editor-in-Chief.

At the Times, Gottlieb oversaw the Paris and and Hong Kong-based operations of the International Herald Tribune. Prior to that, Gottlieb was Associate Managing Editor of the Times’ newsroom on the weekends. He originally joined the Times in 1983 as a reporter.

“I am so excited about Marty’s joining The Record,” said the paper’s Publisher, Stephen A. Borg. “He is a real pro whose experience and stature will elevate us to the next level.”

Gottlieb is succeeding Frank Scandale, who left The Record two months ago.

IHT Names William Schmidt to Top Editor Spot

23schmidt265.jpgThe International Herald Tribune has announced that William Schmidt, most recently an assistant managing editor at the New York Times, has been named IHT‘s new top editor. Schmidt will be taking over for Martin Gottlieb who has been serving in the position on an interim basis. According to the release Gottlieb will be returning to New York from Paris to continue working on the integration of the two papers.

Schmidt has been at the Times since 1981 and in 1987 he was one of a team of reporters who shared the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting for a series of articles about the causes of the space shuttle Challenger disaster. He will move into his new position by the end of the year.
