Hollywood Reporter, In Between Layoffs, Manages To Laud 100 Women, Starting With Oprah

oprah2.jpgThe Hollywood Reporter‘s Annual 100 Most Powerful Women List came out today with none other than, no surprise, Oprah at the top of the heap.

She was followed by some of the usual female subjects, including DreamWorks Stacey Snider, Sony’s Amy Pascal, CBS’s Nancy Tellem and MGM’s Mary Parent.

The girls are all breakfasting at the Beverly Hills Hotel this morning. No doubt eating power bars.

MGM May Be Looking to India for $$$$…Like DreamWorks

MGM, with president Mary Parentmp.jpg at the helm, may be following DreamWorks down the money line to India with a deal with Reliance ADA Group, according to the New York Post.

MGM needs cash to deal with a $3.7 billion that comes due in 2012. As the studio hasn’t had many hits of late, that may be a bit difficult unless they can find a Golden Goose or a just somebody with money.

Needless to say, MGM will turn into a DreamWorks wannabe if this deal comes through. DreamWorks just closed its deal with Reliance so that Steven Spielberg can keep face with an influx of more than $1 billion in production funds.

MGM had no comment on the story, but executives were reportedly headed to Bombay for a flurry of meetings.

Just kidding.

But they still need the cash.

Parent Turning MGM Into A Studio — What Gives?

Mary Parent.jpg
Former Universal Studios film maven Mary Parent is transforming MGM into a real studio, just a few years after Sony acquired it but made it look like it was putting it to death.

Parent, a former New Line Cinema executive and then Universal Film president and then a producer, has been doing it in baby steps.
Most recently, she just bought an action film, “Wardogs,” with “Get Smart” director Peter Segal attached to direct.

MGM, which still relies heavily on another action figure (called James Bond) may be looking to tap into the ever-burgeoning foreign markets. It turns out Mary Parent is actually turning into a Parent with a little MGM waiting to grow.

Parent Evolves into a Self-Made CEO

Mary Parent, who climbed the corporate rungs at both New Line and Universal from assistant-director-VP-senior VP-president-chairman of various film divisions, is now alone at the top as chairwoman of MGM.
Parent has just set up one of her first solely organized films, a new version of “Robocop” with Pi helmer Darren Aronofsky on board to direct.
No word on who will be cast as the half-man, half-robot crimefighter.
Variety reports that MGM is keeping the logline under wraps. But insiders say it will take the sci-fi vigilante classic in more of a noir direction.
Which is right up Aronofsky’s alley with “Requiem for a Dream.” And Parent’s with her years of New Line Cinema experience.
