Reporter Tallies Lakers vs. Clippers Tattoos

Another day, another bit of fodder for the Lakers vs. Clippers debate. Actually, make that two bits.

Along with Friday’s news that the Clippers have signed free agent Kenyon Martin, LA Times reporter Gale Holland has distilled her own fan allegiances dilemma down to some unique pick ‘em methodology. And when it comes to tattoos, the comparative discussion inevitably must begin with Lakers forward Matt Barnes:

Barnes has his twin sons’ footprints on his neck and a heavenly mural of his mother, who died in 2007, on his torso. A pair of eyes on his back glares at viewers over “La Famiglia,”a tribute to the Italian half of his heritage. He plans to add the rest of his family tree to what empty space remains below. Barnes said the eyes are a reminder to “watch my back.”

It was SRO at Michael’s today. The dining room was a tasty mix of media mavens with a heaping helping of politicos and a dash of flash with a very tall L.A. Laker. (We don’t follow basketball, but several guys in the room made sure we knew it was Matt Barnes who made heads turn.)

I was joined by Andrew Amill, VP of media sales at Weight Watchers, who, unlike many of his colleagues in publishing is seeing some extraordinary numbers these days. “This is a record year in the history of the brand driven by The Points Plus system and [spokesperson] Jennifer Hudson,” Andy tells me. The numbers speak for themselves: Newsstand sales are up 10 percent;  print ad revenue is up eight percent. Online, the business is exploding with an impressive 25 percent jump in ad revenue.

As a lifetime members of Weight Watchers, I told Andy I’d been a longtime fan of the brand but was really impressed by their canny selection of Hudson as a spokesperson. “She has a lot of credibility with members and readers,” says Andy, and that’s translated into plenty of new members who have joined because of the amazing results the Oscar winner got from the program. In fact, the cover of this month’s issue features an attractive array of men and women, ‘real life success stories’ that attest to the program’s sweeping success. This is definitely not your mother’s Weight Watchers.

Here’s the rundown on today’s crowd:

1.  Atttorney Rob Barnett, presiding over a table of business types

2.  Wayne Kabak and Lauren Green

3. Oxygen Media founder Geraldine Laybourne

4. Producer Francine LeFrak and some colorfully dressed social swells

Basketball Wives LA Schedule Now Includes Two August Court Dates

Even though the upcoming VH1 series Basketball Wives LA encompasses Kimsha Artest, the significant other of “Metta World Peace,” the final weeks leading up to the scheduled August 29 debut on VH1 have been anything but in keeping with Ron-ron’s new handle.

According to the always eagle-eyed Eriq Gardner of THR Esq., there are not one but two court dates set for later this month. On August 22, Orlando Magic star Gilbert Arenas will try to get an injunction to prevent the show from airing, while a week later, on the series debut date, attorneys for production company The Shed Media Group will be ready to fire back. Per Gardner:

Here’s the key [Media Shed response] passage:

“In a showing of unparalleled hubris, Plaintiff claims that he is so famous and important that simply mentioning the words ‘basketball wives’ in the same sentence as [his former fiancée Laura] Govan’s name -impermissibly impinges on his rights… Plaintiff is wrong.”
