Randall Roberts Named LA Times Pop Music Critic

Current LA Times Pop Music Editor Randall Roberts is taking on a new job — that of Pop Music Critic. The post was vacated by Ann Powers in February, nearly two years after she moved to Alabama and began telecommuting.

Roberts was the LA Weekly music editor until last year, when the LAT hired him away to become Pop Music Editor. He’ll continue with his editorial duties until a replacement is found.

Memo from the LAT after the jump.

Skeptic Michael Shermer is Blogging at True/Slant

156px-Shermer_wiki_portrait4.jpgMichael Shermer author and publisher of Skeptic Magazine is now at True/Slant. He was gracious enough to give us a moment of his time to ask him about it:

FBLA: Does this mean we can call you a blogger? As in, “we’re interviewing a blogger right now”?

MS: Yup, I’m officially a blogger now, so I can use colloquialisms, like “yup.”

FBLA: Are you skeptical about this whole old media thing now that you’re a blogger?

MS: I’ve always been skeptical of the media, ever since I saw a story on the news on a topic that I actually knew something about, and I could see exactly where and how the reporting was wrong, and that made me wonder what I was being told (and accepting uncritically) about subjects I knew next to nothing about, which is most of the news.

FBLA: Who’s your favorite True/Slant blogger (save Matt Taibbi)?

MS: Tina Dupuy is my favorite True/Slant blogger, because she speaks truthiness/slantiness to power.

FBLA: Good pick. We also would have accepted Matt Fleischer as an answer. What can we look forward to on your page?

MS: Science and politics, science and economics, science and society, and science and sex (the latter thrown in so I can get more followers).

FBLA: Oh you bloggers are all alike.

Thanks Michael! Check out his page here.

Matt Fleischer Joins True/Slant

matthewfleischer_136.jpgMatt Fleischer sent us an email begging us to post about his latest attempt at infamy – a column at the new media business model hybrid True/Slant (or as everyone else calls it, ‘that site Matt Taibbi writes for’).

So we checked out what Fleischer is writing about:

And so it was with great joy today that I stumbled across the work of Leonard Gravis in the Boston Globe. It only took one clue for Mr. Gravis to reel me in. “The ____ mightier than the sword.”

Think about that one for a moment and then consider that this clue fell on space number 69 across.

Yes, the answer to 69 across in today’s Boston Globe is “Penis.” (Come on, click the links. It’s funny.)

Really, Matt? You’re opening with a dick joke? We guess if you’ve been laid off as many times as Fleischer has (LA Weekly then City Beat), a dick joke is actually a higher form a humor. The lower being the one the city workers make as they scrape you off the pavement after you’ve flung yourself off whichever building is tall enough to do the trick.

Good luck to you, Fleischer.

Welcome to LA, President Obama

President Barack Obama is in town today. That’s why traffic is worse than normal. Hmf. Motorcades.

And to welcome our new overlord is the cover story on today’s City Beat with a piece about a group that thinks Obama is a lizard or something subversive with scales. Was this on purpose? No, according to editor Matt Fleischer said it’s a coincidence.

“There is lucky, there is good, and then there is City Beat. Today we are gods among men.” Fleischer told FBLA.

“Oh, and we challenge President Obama to come by the City Beat offices and prove he’s not leading a cabal of reptilian space invaders bent on world domination …and to sign some copies of the paper for us.”
