Petition Started Against Mayor Bloomberg’s Treatment of WPIX Reporter Mary Murphy

A force sympathetic to Channel 11′s Mary Murphy comes out swinging.

As we reported yesterday, an angered Mayor Bloomberg lost his cool for the City to see, when he didn’t like a question by the seasoned WPIX reporter.

Well, one viewer objected to Hizzoner’s less-than-professional meltdown at the press conference.

The outraged individual, who goes by the handle, TheNews Diva, started a petition simply seeking an apology from Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Bloomberg has made gun control one of his key initiatives, and has gone so far as to have ads running during the Olympics. However, the controversial matter of discarded shell casings got under Bloomberg’s skin yesterday.

When pressed by Murphy asking if the city would change its policy, as we reported yesterday, the Mayor would have none of it.

“Either you want to ask a question and I give you an answer, or please come to the next press conference and stand in the back,” Bloomberg told Murphy. “I’m happy to answer your question, thank you very much. But I’ve given you the courtesy and I expect the same courtesy. Thank you very much.”

The petition on change.org is titled, Mayor of New York City: Apologize to Mary Murphy, WPIX News Reporter.

(Video) Mayor Bloomberg Gets Confrontational with WPIX Reporter Mary Murphy

Mayor Bloomberg has been using his City Hall podium as a national pulpit for gun control. But when WPIX reporter Mary Murphy had the opportunity to question Bloomberg about the shell casing controversy, he took a different tack.

At issue, the June sale of 28-thousand pounds of spent shell casings from the NYPD firing range in the Bronx to an ammunition dealer in Georgia.

Murphy threw some questions at Bloomberg at an event yesterday. When the highly competent Murphy seemed to get the ”run-around,” she pressed Bloomberg on the City’s shell casing policy, causing an all-too-familiar, irritated scene. (See video after the jump)

“Either you want to ask a question and I give you an answer, or please come to the next press conference and stand in the back,” Bloomberg told Murphy. “I’m happy to answer your question, thank you very much. But I’ve given you the courtesy and I expect the same courtesy. Thank you very much.”

While Murphy, an 18-time Emmy Award winner, clearly hit a nerve with the shell casings question, Bloomberg ended the give and take saying, “In [this] case, we have always sold scrap metal. And that’s all this is.”

New York City-Based Programs Nab 106 Emmy Nominations

The Emmy Award nominations were released today. There are some happy people in Hollywood, but City Hall is also ecstatic. Shows that originate in New York City received 106 nominations. Mayor Bloomberg was delighted for recognition of New York programming.

“Today’s Emmy nominations cap a momentous year for our ‘Made in NY’ television shows. The shows that call New York City home and generate quality jobs for some of the 130,000 New Yorkers who work in the local entertainment industry have earned 106 nominations,” Bloomberg says. “The City is so proud to host these productions and I congratulate them on behalf of all New Yorkers. We’re especially proud of one of New York City’s funniest shows: Saturday Night Live received 14 nominations this year and now holds the record for most nominations for a single program with 156 in total.”

The City’s media and entertainment commissioner, Katherine Oliver, echoed the Mayor’s thoughts.

“We’ve watched their shows all year long on our TVs, computers and tablets, and now we’re thrilled to congratulate all of the ‘Made in NY’ Emmy nominees. New York City is home to some of the most creative and talented people in the world; we really are a TV town. We’ll be rooting for you when the winners are announced in September.”

Six new shows will be produced in New York City this fall.

Be Like Mayor Bloomberg, Learn How to Code!

These days, you can’t just be a print journalist or publicist or good old media professional. You have to know how to take wonderful pictures, work in content management systems, and shoot Spielberg-quality video.

The next thing: know how to code. Shoot, you can’t even be the Mayor without knowing how.

That’s why Mayor Bloomberg is upping his skills as one of more than 174,000 people (including this co-editor) who have signed up for Code Year, a 12-month initiative developed by Codeacademy that will deliver an “interactive programming lesson” to your email weekly so that by 2012, you’ll be building apps and websites.

Mayor Bloomberg was so excited that he tweeted about it:

Of course, mediabistro.com has always had you covered in the skill development arena. We offer an array of classes to keep you employed, such as ones that teach HTML. You can keep that resolution of learning a new career-related skill by signing up today.

Lunch: Barbara Walters, Barry Diller & Dana Perino

— DIANE CLEHANE

I’m glad I got to Michael’s early today because by 12:30 they were literally lining up outside the front door to get in the joint. Even the Garden Room (Siberia to the uninitiated) was SRO. The groups of wannabe diners at the bar and in the lounge were enviously eyeing the tables occupied by the famous and fabulous in the front room as they dined and dished without notice. Who says there’s no class system in America?

Ah, but you know better, and so do the regulars who, despite hurricane winds and the worst traffic we’ve seen all year, found their way to their power perches to see and be seen by Gotham’s glitterati. Perception is reality these days and from where I sat, it’s business as usual for these folks. We spotted Michael Fuchs working the room like nobody’s business, shaking hands with Matt Blank, Jon Tisch and an assortment of moguls who crossed his path. Others, such as Barry Diller, were riveted to the conversation at their own table. Working on some killer deal, no doubt.

I made my way around the jam-packed dining room to check in with my pals. I needed the breathing room since it was elbow to elbow at the bar, and I was seated across from a gleeful foursome who were celebrating something over a few beers. (See, despite what you’ve been reading not everything is gloom and doom). I was happy to stop and chat with Men’s Health honcho David Zinczenko and his former public relations man (and brand new dad to seven-week-old son Benjamin!) Jon Hammond. Jon, who also worked for Conde Nast Traveler, now works for the NBA as senior director of community and player programs communications. Somehow, the three of us got into a lively discussion about the merits of Twitter. “All my guys are doing it,” says Jon of the NBA players he’s working with. I shared that in working on an upcoming story for Variety, I’ve discovered that some pretty high-level folks are saying it’s an effective way “to build a brand.” David, who never misses a thing, had a brainstorm within seconds of hearing our cases for using Twitter professionally. Look for Men’s Health to have its own Twitter feed in the not-too-distant future where readers can join in the conversation about things like the magazine’s highly popular “Eat This, Not That” franchise. Dave also gave me some scoop about some changes afoot in the next issue of Men’s Health: Fans of recently shuttered Best Life (we loved it!) will be happy to hear that, according to Dave, “the best elements of Best Life are being incorporated” into Men’s Health. Makes sense to us. And, Best Life‘s former editor, Stephen Perrine, is now heading up the newly created position of overseeing books from Men’s Health and Women’s Health magazines. Congrats!

Here’s the rundown on today’s crowd:

1. A smiling Barry Diller and a bespectacled gent we didn’t recognize…

2. Jonathan Tisch and a dark-haired beauty. Jon had a big hello for Hoda Kotb when he spotted her across the room.

3. Showtime’s main man Matt Blank

4. Barbara Walters deep in conversation with Mayor Michael Bloomberg‘s gal pal Diana Taylor

Inside The Time 100 Party

America Ferrera and John Mayer

It’s arguably the most exclusive magazine party of the year. (Graydon Carter‘s Vanity’s Fair Oscar party perhaps being the other.) John Edwards mingled with John Mayer. Sir Richard Branson (just back from dogsledding in Alaska) commandeered the corner of the bar like a Virgin spaceship, and allowed Henry Kissinger to ride co-pilot. Craigslist’s Craig Newmark chatted up Wikipedia’s Jimmy Wales. New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick walked through the cocktail hour unrecognized. Michael J. Fox, too, virtually unnoticed, chatted with Elizabeth Vargas near the glass window overlooking Central Park. Arianna Huffington was noticed. (Line uttered in every pre-dinner conversation: “Is that someone? It looks like someone, I don’t know … do you?”)

Time Warner execs — like Richard Parsons and Jeffrey Bewkes — buzzed along the edges as the usual media-on-media action (including Ad Age‘s Nat Ives, WWD‘s Stephanie Smith, Jossip’s David Hauslaib, New York mag’s Jesse Oxfeld, Gawker’s Lockhart Steele and Doree Shafrir, ETP’s Rachel Sklar, Glynnis MacNicol, Julia Allison, Radar‘s Jeff Bercovici, NYO‘s Michael Calderone) made nice use of the open bar.

But as much firepower as there was at last night’s Time 100 party at Jazz at Lincoln Center, just 36 of the 100 to make 2007′s “most influential people in the world” list made it, and there were plenty of notable no-shows: No Obama. No Borat. No Queen of England. Rosie. No Leo. No Gore. No Timberlake. No Tyra.

But impassioned speeches — delivered over dinner by Elizabeth Edwards, Brian Williams, Bloomberg (with an ode to late Boston Celtics’ exec Red Auerbach — huh?) Branson and others — and a three-song set by Mayer more than made up for the relative lack of A-listers.

Others spotted during cocktail hour: Cate Blanchett, Mayor Bloomberg, Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan, Simon Fuller, Charlie Rose, Tina Fey, Mario Cuomo, Martha Stewart, Brian Grazer, Gayle King (no Oprah), Matt Lauer, Chris Matthews, Brian Williams, Ziyi Zhang, Police Commisioner Ray Kelly, Suzanne Vega, Harvey Weinstein, David Lauren and Lauren Bush.

The list of America’s 60 most generous donors is out, and Mayor Bloomberg and media magnate Mort Zuckerman [right] have made the top 20, pledging $165 million and $100 million to charity in 2006, respectively. Warren Buffett tops the list with his $43.5 billion 2006 pledge.

Curiously missing from the list are several prominent — and rich — New Yorkers: Zuckerman nemesis Rupert Murdoch, Ralph Lauren and Donald Trump.

Some selected list-makers with New York ties:

9. Michael R. Bloomberg | Media and entertainment | $165 million
18. 2006 Mortimer B. Zuckerman | Media and entertainment, real estate | $100 million
30. Ronald O. Perelman | Finance, investments | $60.8 million
35. Oprah Winfrey | Media and entertainment | $58.3 million
38. H. F. (Gerry) and Marguerite B. Lenfest | Media and entertainment | $55.7 million

EARLIER:
