Mediabistro.com community manager Seamus Condron welcomes party-goers to the Tweetup

As Social Media Week continues in full force in New York, members of media are swarming and gathering in large groups to keep warm and dry and out of the NYC winter slush.

One of last night’s biggest events was hosted by mediabistro.com at Turtle Bay, a social media Tweetup that drew a hefty crowd filled to the brim with social media experts and community managers from media outfits across the city.

For more photos of the lively crowd, check out the Flickr photostream.

Could E&P Have Been Saved?

Did The Nielsen Co. have an opportunity to sell newspaper industry trade Editor & Publisher instead of shutting it down?

That’s what Alan Meckler, CEO WebMediaBrands, told FishbowlNY today. Meckler said his company, which also owns mediabistro.com, offered to take the pub off Nielsen’s hands several months ago. He said his company offered to pay nothing for the title, but was willing to take on all of their subscriber liability. Under WebMediaBrands’ oversight, E&P would have continued to produce content, although it’s likely its print version would not have survived the transition, Meckler said.

However, Nielsen declined the offer, claiming it could receive “millions” for the title, Meckler told us.

Today, E&P wrote the worst story a publication can ever produce: a report on its own closure. Reported the pub:

“The expressions of surprise and outpouring of strong support for E&P that have followed across the Web — Editor & Publisher has even hit No. 4 as a Twitter trending topic — raise the notion that the publication might yet continue in some form…As news spread of E&P‘s fate, the staffers have been inundated with calls from members of the industry it covers, and many others, expressing shock and hopes for a revival. Staff members will stay on for the remainder of 2009.”

The end of the article includes a way to contact all of the title’s staffers. Pretty smart. We think they’ll probably be getting some job offers soon.

‘Editor & Publisher’ to Cease Publication After 125 Years –Editor & Publisher

Top 2008 News Stories that Don’t Begin With ‘O’

Barack Obama is not the only top story of 2008! Over at The Morning Delivery Bill Lucey has done some digging and uncovered websites such as HuffPo, Salon, and yours truly (technically mediabistro.com) who crowned others the most newsworthy this year (hello Sarah Palin!). You can find his full list here, in the meantime some highlights:

At The Huffington Post, for example, Sarah Palin‘s lavish spending was the most popular piece, which collected the most page views, while the Republican vice presidential candidate’s bikini photos was the blog post with the most page views-979 million to be exact.

At mediabistro.com, the shocking news of NBC Meet the Press host Tim Russert, dying from a heart attack at age 58 was the story that received the most reaction of the year.

Google, meanwhile, posted their most popular search terms of 2008, which shows Sarah Palin, the fastest rising search term around the globe, followed by ‘Beijing 2008,’ and Facebook.

Want to Know Where the Media Types are Partying? Check Out mediabistro.com’s The Press List

Everybody knows that the key to succeeding in media is schmoozing! Well in New York media anyway. (The boa is optional, though clearly it has proven results). To that end, the ever industrious mediabistro.com folks who run our show (and they are seriously industrious, have you looked through all this stuff?) bring you The Press List, a weekly newsletter alerting you to upcoming media events worth knowing about. Here’s a sneak peek:

On Friday, there will be several magazine-sponsored events for your Halloween partying convenience: Esquire hosts the annual celebrity-studded Joonbug masquerade at Capitale. Hip-hopper-turned-MTV reality star Reverend Run will be the evening’s master of ceremonies. For those of you who’d rather not pony up for a ticket, Mass Appeal and Missbehave will team up with Rockstar Games to host a dance party in Williamsburg. If you’re looking for a more refined Halloween night, The Economist, kicks off its “Off The Page Discussion Series” Friday, with Leonard Lopate hosting a fittingly morbid look at the “art of obituary.” Off the Page events will continue throughout the weekend…

Interested? Sign up here. Want them to include your stuff? Just submit your event here.
