That character trait has served Anastos well in the dog-eat-dog business of TV news for more than 35 years. Anastos needed all of his inner-strength in 2012, as we’ve well documented, when he was lifted from the 10 p.m. newscast on WNYW. It marked the legendary anchor’s first time being cut from his station’s late news since arriving here in 1978.

But ever-positive, the multiple Emmy Award recipiant has forged ahead. Anastos, who still anchors the 5 p.m. with Dari Alexander, is putting more focus on his pet project, Positively Ernie. You’ve seen Anastos’ show as a number of specials that began in May 2011. Now, it’s a regular part of the Channel 5 lineup, 5:30 p.m. Saturdays. He began a month-long series last weekend.

“I am working on putting the program back on for a 13-week cycle starting next March with sponsor commitments,” Anastos tells FishbowlNY. “So far, GOYA Foods, Con Edison and Red Apple/Gristedes Supermarkets have given the show great advertising support.”

Anastos, who is also a gifted movitational speaker, knows how to tap into the ways to enrich and enhance people’s lives. One feature each week is with regular guest Dr. Mehmet Oz. In a typical episode, he’d discuss how to improve health and lifestyle for the whole family, or share some secrets of setting goals for living better and longer.

And thus, legendary anchorman Ernie Anastos needed an outlet to tell heartwarming, uplifting stories-Positively Ernie was born.

Anastos is pleased that his bosses have embraced the show idea.

“Fox 5 committed to giving me the opportunity to do a number of specials throughout the year,” Anastos says. “I’ve chosen really to focus on this type of program, so they’ve been cooperative and generous.”

The WNYW/Channel 5 anchor brought his trademark smile to the first installment in May.

“The reason that I want to do this is because I feel it’s important to keep this kind of balance and positive kind of information out there,” Anastos tells FishbowlNY. “The last special that I did, I really received a lot of responses.”

Last night, Time magazine managing editor Richard Stengel hosted a distinguished panel of guests to debate the question that always surfaces around this time of year: who should be Time‘s Person of the Year?

Stengel co-moderated the good-natured debate with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani — Time‘s Person of the Year in 2001. Panelists like Barbara Walters were encouraged to bring lists of possible Person of the Year candidates who met the title’s criteria, which includes having a global impact in the past year, for better or worse.

After running through lists of possible Person of the Year winners that included Bernie Madoff, Captain “Sully” Sullenberger and the Iranian protesters, the six-person panel ended the night in a three-three split. Walters agreed with TV personality Dr. Mehmet Oz and Gayle King that “the guys from Twitter,” meaning Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams and Biz Stone, should take the prize. Giuliani, “Top Chef” judge Tom Colicchio and Pittsburgh mayor Luke Ravensthal all voted for “the economy,” settling on some amalgam of Ben Bernanke and the unemployed American worker as Person of the Year.

Stengel didn’t give any hints about who would end up the final winner later this year, but we’ll see in a few weeks when the Person of the Year issue hits newsstands.

Among the new hires are former Marie Claire executive editor Lucy Kaylin, who has been named deputy editor; Patrick Mitchell, who is taking the role of design director; former Publishers Weekly editor-in-chief Sara Nelson, who has been named books director; former Prevention senior editor Tyler Graham, who will be health and environment editor and Jennifer Rainey Marquez, formerly of Women’s Health, who will take on the role of senior editor.

“As we prepare for O’s tenth anniversary year in 2010, I couldn’t be more pleased that Lucy, Patrick, Sara, Tyler and Jennifer are joining our team,” said Casey, who joined the magazine earlier this summer. “They all come to the magazine with incredible talent and experience in their respective areas and I’m confident they will be a great asset to O as we move into our next phase of growth.”

O also named Dr. Mehmet Oz a contributing editor. He will write a regular health column for the magazine starting with the October issue. The magazine also said that features director Pat Towers will be retiring this month, although she will continue to work on special projects for the magazine.

And in other Oprah Winfrey news, Sirius XM has announced the launch of Winfrey’s exclusive 24/7 Sirius XM radio station. Starting on Monday, episodes of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” will now be broadcast on satellite radio the morning after they air in syndication on TV. The channel will also replay classic “Oprah Show” episodes as well as shows hosted by Gayle King, Dr. Oz, Maya Angelou and sex therapist Dr. Laura Berman.
