Meredith Vet Jill Waage Adds Another Impressive Career Chapter

JillWaageHeadshotOne way to frame how long Jill Waage (pictured), the new executive editor of the Better Homes and Gardens brand, has been with Meredith is to note the average median purchase price of a U.S. home when she first started: $120,000.

Waage, a graduate of Drake University, joined Meredith in 1991 as an associate editor, where she was responsible for creating a lineup of New Product Guides for kitchen, bath, home building and home furnishings. In her Meredith career, Waage has held a number of senior editing and management positions, including executive editor of over 20 Special Interest media titles and a lineup of high-end home and décor bookazines. Waage also served as title editor of three decorating magazines, including the bi-monthly Decorating, and was the founding editor of Real+Life Decorating.

Eat This, Not That! Magazine Launches

The empire of Eat This, Not That! — which started as a Men’s Health column penned by David Zinczenko — continues. The latest development is a quarterly magazine carrying the brand name, published by Meredith and Zinczenko’s media company Galvanized.

Eat This, Not That! will be sold at roughly 80,000 newsstands across the nation beginning today. The debut issue features standard healthy eating content, plus Zinczenko’s guide to choosing the healthiest options in restaurants.

The magazine is the first of what promises to be many joint projects between Meredith and Galvanized. “David has done an excellent job bringing the best of the Eat This, Not That! brand to life in a magazine format, and has created exciting new features that will entertain and inform,” said Meredith National Media Group president Tom Harty, in a statement. “We’re excited to be working with Galvanized and look forward to creating more products in the future.”

AMC Networks Buys 49.9 Percent Stake in BBC America (TVNewser)
AMC Networks has agreed to purchase a 49.9 percent stake in BBC America from BBC Worldwide for $200 million. AMC Networks will look for greater distribution for BBC World News in the U.S. B&C BBC Worldwide will retain a 50.1 percent equity stake in the cable channel, while AMC Networks will have operational control of BBCA, including affiliate and advertising sales, though it will still be consistent with BBC’s editorial standards and policies. THR The cable networks company and the commercial arm of U.K. public broadcaster BBC announced the deal Thursday after reports of their talks first emerged over the summer. The channel airs such BBC favorites as Doctor Who, Sherlock, Top Gear and Planet Earth. AMC Networks operates the AMC, Sundance, WE tv and IFC channels, and can now add the so-far independent BBC America when it negotiates carriage fees, giving both partners increased leverage in talks with pay-TV operators. WSJ The deal comes as the biggest pay-TV distributors are consolidating, prompting analyst speculation that content players will also have to seek greater scale. Variety Executives at both companies portrayed the arrangement as one borne out of a desire to gain greater reach for premium content that attracts high-income audiences. The two sides have worked together in the recent past. The two have collaborated on series including Top of The Lake and The Honourable Woman as well as the coming program One Child. AMC Networks and BBC Television have agreed to continue to jointly pursue a number of content investment opportunities on a range of future projects, both through BBC America and other AMC Networks channels. BBC America is to be managed as a standalone asset within AMC’s portfolio.

HBO to Offer Stand-Alone Streaming Service Beginning in 2015 (LostRemote)
HBO announced plans Wednesday to offer a stand-alone streaming service in 2015. FishbowlNY “We will work with our current partners,” HBO’s CEO Richard Plepler said, in a statement. “And, we will explore models with new partners. All in, there are 80 million homes that do not have HBO and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them.” SocialTimes Having a Web-only option will help the channel with online-TV watchers, who cite flexibility as the main reason for watching original series online. Internet users are becoming more accustomed to consuming what they want, when they want it; HBO is finally adapting to this reality. THR Plepler didn’t give too many details about the service, such as pricing and when it would launch, saying he didn’t want to tip off competitors too much. Shortly after Plepler’s announcement, shares of Netflix dropped 4 percent, while shares of Time Warner were about 3 percent higher as investors digested the HBO news as well as some other rosy predictions coming from the Time Warner investor day presentations. Mashable It is important to note that HBO is far from giving up on cable television. Plepler stressed in his statements before the announcement that HBO’s business and relationships with cable partners is important. The channel brought in $4.9 billion in 2013 and has about 114 million subscribers. There has been eager anticipation for HBO to capitalize on its already popular streaming platform by offering it outside of cable subscriptions. HBO Go logins have become something of a social currency, allowing users to access content via accounts of friends and family. Game of Thrones has also grown into the most pirated TV show of all time.

President Obama took the podium Wednesday in Martha’s Vineyard to speak about James Foley, the American journalist who was beheaded by ISIS in a video released Tuesday. The United States Wednesday morning verified the authenticity of the video, which also shows another captive American journalist, Steven Sotloff, and warns that he will be next to die. They fail because the future’s won by those who build and not destroy. The world is shaped by people like Jim Foley.” ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, FOX News, CNN, MSNBC and Al Jazeera America all broadcast Obama’s statement live. NYT Obama declared on Wednesday that the entire world was “appalled” by the videotaped beheading of Foley by Islamic militants, speaking as American warplanes conducted 14 airstrikes in Iraq and the State Department asked the Pentagon to send as many as 300 more American troops to Iraq for security. Mashable Obama sent U.S. troops to Syria earlier this summer to rescue a number of Americans held by a violent extremist group, including Foley, but the troops did not find the hostages, senior Obama administration officials said Wednesday. The officials said the rescue mission was authorized after intelligence agencies believed they had identified the location inside Syria where the hostages were being held. HuffPost Associated Press CEO Gary Pruitt condemned the murder of journalist Foley in a statement on Wednesday. His murder should be treated as a war crime, according to Pruitt. Foley went missing in Syria in 2012. He contributed to the GlobalPost and Agence France-Presse, among other media outlets. TVNewser CBS’s Clarissa Ward changed her profile picture, Fox News’s Conor Powell remembers him as “a great guy,” while Al Jazeera journalist Mohamed Fadel Fahmy, himself imprisoned in Egypt, says Foley’s murder “will spark a revolution against terrorists.” These are just some of the ways those who knew and worked alongside the intrepid journalist are remembering their colleague killed by ISIS militants.

PBS NewsHour Names ABC’s Sara Just Executive Producer (FishbowlDC)
PBS NewsHour announced Thursday that 25-plus year ABC News-er Sara Just has been tapped to serve as the program’s executive producer and SVP of NewsHour Productions LLC. Variety Just will oversee the daily operations of the nightly news program, co-anchored by Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff. Deadline Hollywood Just, who has been ABC News’ deputy Washington Bureau chief since April, will join NewsHour on Sept. 2, succeeding Linda Winslow, who is retiring. Just’s hire comes on the heels of WETA taking over NewsHour from MacNeil/Lehrer Productions, the company named after former anchors Robert MacNeil and Jim Lehrer, on July 1. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Before becoming deputy Washington bureau chief at ABC, Just was senior Washington producer for Good Morning America and had spent 17 years at Ted Koppel’s Nightline. ABC News president James Goldston said in a memo to staff Just was integral to the innovation of their digital political coverage. NYT NewsHour has struggled in recent years to raise enough funds to meet its annual budget of $25 million to $30 million, although WETA officials said at the time of the ownership transfer they were confident they could find the money. With money tight, the program has not been able to do as much field reporting as some critics would like. Just said that she would better understand the program’s budget challenges once she started, but added “I think reporting from the field is essential,” when paired with insightful analysis.

Condé Nast Drafts Native-Ad Conflict Resolution Doc

CondeNastLogoThe brave new world of native advertising has an intriguing road map. Per Ad Age‘s Michael Sebastian, senior editorial staff at Condé Nast are currently reviewing a 4,000-word draft document:

The document’s aim is to give publishers and editors who might clash over native ads a quick reference guide to solve any disputes, the executives say. “There are things in there editors won’t like, and things in there that publishers won’t like,” one editor said.

Another one of Sebastian’s sources for the article gets a little bit ahead of proper native context by comparing the document to the Great Charter of the Liberties of England, sealed under oath by King John in 1215. Describing the Condé Nast document as “a Magna Carta for native ads” is hilariously grandiose.

Facebook Teams With Storyful to Launch FB Newswire for Journalists, Media Outlets (AllFacebook)
Facebook has become a virtual newsroom of sorts, with a recent study by the Pew Research Center’s Journalism Project finding that three out of 10 U.S. adults get at least some news while on Facebook and 78 percent of Facebook users see news while navigating the site. Now, the social network is aiming to become an invaluable resource for journalists and media organizations, announcing that it teamed up with social content discovery outfit Storyful to launch FB Newswire. TechCrunch FB Newswire promises to offer journalists a repository of verified, real-time content for use in covering breaking news stories. Storyful’s purpose was to verify news sources from social sites including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and the FB Newsroom version of its tech continues that mission, with the aim of making Facebook a more useful resource for journalists and news publications. GigaOM Storyful was acquired by News Corp. in December for $25 million. FB Newswire will highlight content that has been posted by users and media entities who are reporting on breaking news events around the world, and comes complete with an easy-to-use “embed” function. Mashable The agency will use an algorithm to find popular and breaking news stories on Facebook in categories like sports, entertainment, tech and politics. Facebook is also releasing a Twitter handle for the service, called @FBNewswire, along with the feed. Poynter / MediaWire The company recently hired Liz Heron from The Wall Street Journal to facilitate partnerships between Facebook and news organizations. The FB Newswire page will be publicly accessible but is “100 percent” aimed at journalists, Facebook director of news and global media partnerships Andy Mitchell said. “The format on the page will feel like a wire,” he said.

Allrecipes magazine has arrived. The print version of Meredith’s popular Allrecipes.com will be published six times a year, with a rate base of 500,000. It’ll run you $4.99 for a single copy, or you can purchase a year subscription for $12.
