Meredith Buys and Folds Parenting and Babytalk

Meredith Corporation couldn’t strike a deal with Time Inc., but it had better luck with Bonnier Corporation.

Meredith just announced that it has acquired Parenting and Babytalk magazines — along with their websites — from Bonnier. The magazines will then be folded into Meredith’s Parents and American Baby.

If you’re a Parenting or Babytalk subscriber, get ready for Parents and American Baby to replace them, beginning with September issues. Parenting’s site — parenting.com — will continue to exist, however.

Sadly, as with any merger/folding, people are likely to find themselves out of jobs. We’ll keep you posted about what we hear.

Georgine Anton Rejoins Meredith

Anton has worked for Meredith in the past, so this marks a homecoming of sorts for her. From 1999 to September of last year, she served as senior vice president of integrated marketing. Anton left to join Atlantic Media for just under a year.

“I am so pleased to have Georgine back in the MXM family,” said David Brown, executive vice president of MXM. “During her previous tenure, she raised the bar of client service excellence with some of our largest clients, including Kraft. Georgine has a wonderful focus on innovation, and a desire to develop client strategies that truly work in this increasingly complex work.”

Anton reports to Brown.

Rachael Ray’s Demand for a Delish Deal Lead to Sale of Magazine

(Via Esquire)

Keep in mind that this is only a rumor, but according to Adweek, the biggest reason for Reader’s Digest Association (RDA) selling Every Day with Rachael Ray to Meredith yesterday was that Rachael Ray wanted more money. One source claimed that Ray was never happy with the amount of money she was getting from the magazine, and another said, “Rachael wanted a better deal, and they [RDA] [weren't] prepared to do it.”

Another problem was RDA’s contract with Ray, which kept the company from growing the title. “Because our agreement limited our participation to producing just a magazine, we were unable to expand the brand and its content across multiple platforms,” RDA’s CEO, Robert Guth, admitted. “Going forward, it was not a fit with our master brand strategy.”

Meredith apparently has a better deal in place as far as expanding the brand, but there’s no word on if the new contract includes more money for Ray.

How about that headline, by the way? We almost went with something that included “Sad Sammie” or “Not So Yum-O,” but ultimately went with “Delish” because it didn’t make us want to stab ourselves.

Women Like The Nook, Men, The iPad

Magazine publishers are finding out that when it comes to tablets, women flock to the Nook Color. According to The New York Times, sales of women’s magazines on the Nook are strong, and at times have even outsold their counterparts on the iPad. This is impressive because the Nook has only been around since last November, as Liz Schimel, Executive Vice President for Digital Media for Meredith, points out:

We regarded it as sort of a test. Would the Nook magazine experience resonate with consumers? We were extremely pleasantly surprised. I think Barnes & Noble has been very smart about creating a whole brand and a campaign that’s really targeted at their core mass audience which overlaps nicely with our audience.

So why do women prefer the Nook? It appears that women don’t want all the bells and whistles that come with the iPad. As usual, women are smart enough to realize that they don’t need extras, while men insist on having a device that can perform 748 functions, even though they only ever use 17 of them.

But there’s something more to women preferring the Nook Color.

continued…

Next Issue Media Releases Magazines on Android Platform

Ad Age is reporting that Next Issue Media (NIM) has finally launched magazine apps on tablets that aren’t called iPad. NIM was hopeful back in January that when it launched it would feature two magazines from each of the publishing houses that own a stake in it (Hearst, Meredith, Conde Nast, Time), but it looks to have fallen short of that goal.

As of now, there are seven magazines available through the Verizon V Cast Store: Time, Fortune, The New Yorker, Esquire, Fitness and Parents. Just like the Apple subscriptions, consumers can purchase a single issue or subscribe for a year.

It’s a good start for NIM, because even though the iPad is the most popular tablet, there are always going to be consumers who want to use something else. Now those people have a way to read some of their favorite magazines on tablets.

NIM is taking a small step here, but that’s better than nothing at all.

Meredith Launches iPad Versions of Better Homes and Gardens, Parents, and Fitness

Moms across the world, dust off your mom jeans and get ready to party, because Meredith has launched iPad versions of its Better Homes and Gardens, Parents, and Fitness brands.

All three are available for single purchase in iTunes. Better Homes and Gardens is $3.99, while Parents and Fitness are $2.99 each. Those with Android tablets win here, because Meredith plans to offer subscriptions via Next Issue Media eventually.

Liz Schimel, Executive Vice President, Consumer Relationship Management and Digital Media, for Meredith says that when creating the apps, reader feedback was vital. She adds, “Our consumer insights were incredibly valuable during every step of planning and creation.”

Each iPad version carries content from the print editions, as well as new, interactive elements.

Publishing Companies Shifting Ad Sales Training

An article on FINS.com today discusses how ad sales teams at major publishing companies are being asked to focus more on digital sales. Teams at Hearst, Meredith, Condé Nast, and others, are becoming more integrated; they are no longer just highlighting print ad sales. With this change, the companies have had to retrain their teams.

Michael Clinton, Marketing and Publishing Director at Hearst, says that print ad sales will always be vital, but increasing knowledge of the digital realm is necessary:

A significantly dominant share of our revenue still comes from print advertising. But with that being said, we are very aggressively joined into the digital future – that includes all of our magazine websites.

Publishing Companies Prepare Tablet App Store

Time Inc., Condé Nast, Hearst Corporation, and Meredith Corporation are adding the finishing touches to their tablet app store. Morgan Guenther, the Chief Executive of Next Issue Media (NIM), the new venture owned by the publishing companies, says that it should launch within the next few months.

He says that when the store launches, it will feature at least two titles from each of the companies, and by this summer, every magazine will be available. Guenther also says that News Corporation’s (another owner of NIM) newspapers will be available by then.

For now, the app store will only be available on Android tablets. This is because NIM is the result of publishing houses not wanting other companies (read: Apple) to dictate how their products are distributed.

Taste of Home, the section of the Reader’s Digest Association behind such titles as Healthy Cooking and Simple & Delicious, has proved the adage that even when down, home and food titles are ahead of the industry game. We saw this last year with Meredith Corporation taking away major accolades for their multi-platform strategy of development, and so far 2010 is shaping up to reinforce this idea, with Reader’s Digest hiring Piper Goodspeed to head up their Eastern Accounts for Taste of Home.

Before working at Taste of Home, Goodspeed was the executive director of food and beverage for Self magazine.

American Baby‘s Editor-In-Chief Retires

Meredith Corp. lost a major player at one of its publications today, but unlike most departures this year, Judy Nolte‘s exit from American Baby was voluntary.

Meredith announced today that Nolte is retiring. After leaving the magazine world, Nolte initially plans to focus on volunteer work at Sloane-Kettering and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among other projects. Dana Points, the editor-in-chief of Meredith’s Parents magazine, will take over Nolte’s editorial tasks after she leaves.

Says Meredith National Media Group President Jack Griffin, “Judy Nolte has been one of the magazine industry’s most admired editors, a passionate voice for new moms, and has generously shared her knowledge and expertise serving as a mentor for countless professionals across the industry.”

It’s nice to see that some partings can still happen amicably in the print industry, without a pink slip.

Food Network Magazine Promotes, Expands Marketing Staff

With Meredith Corporation publications like Better Homes and Gardens and Family Circle perhaps being the only magazines increasing ad pages this year, is it any surprise that other home and cooking titles are looking to increase in the same way?

Food Network Magazine is certainly looking to get its name out there, today announcing the promotion of two of their employees to high-level marketing positions: former marketing coordinator Nikki Zila has been bumped up to associate manager in integrated marketing, while previous manager Allison Home will now be serving as marketing director. Meanwhile, two new hires, Fabian Castro and Julie Mahoney, have been brought on as director of brand development and director of promotions and merchandising, respectively.
