Maxim Lost $5 Million Last Year

Alpha Media Group put Maxim up for sale in March with the hopes of attracting “meaningful and beneficial” offers. Well, the latter request isn’t going to happen. According to the New York Post, Maxim lost about $5 million last year, and ad pages continue to plummet.

We suspect that will keep potential partners/new owners at bay, unless they’ve got extremely deep pockets. Speaking of that, could you imagine if Michael Bloomberg bought Maxim? He’d be a blast at the magazine’s annual Super Bowl party:

Random Dude: “Hey Mikey, beer me!”

Bloomberg: “I would rather not beer, anyone. Thank you.”

Time Goes with Five Covers for Annual ‘Time 100′ Issue

If you ask us, Time only needed one cover for its annual Time 100 issue, which lists the 100 most influential people in the world. Instead, the glossy published five U.S. covers, along with two international ones. The one person we would’ve picked? Malala Yousafzai, the 15-year-old Pakistani girl who stood up for women’s rights, despite being hunted by the Taliban. This is just a hunch, but we think she might be more influential than Jennifer Lawrence.

Some highlights from the Time 100:

Michael Bloomberg Still Hates Social Networking, Says Things Like ‘Re-Facebooked’

Michael Bloomberg has never been shy about admitting his utter disdain for social networking. Given the opportunity to comment about Twitter or Facebook, Bloomberg will trash it as much as possible. Here’s the latest example, captured by Capital New York:

Number one, I don’t understand why people don’t understand that anything you write, anything you send out, is gonna be retweeted, re-Facebooked, re-this, re-that. You should write down, number one, only things you believe, and number two, then think about how it would look if somebody else sees it. There are just a lot of young kids who are doing things on their Twitter account, their Facebook account, that later on is gonna come back and bite them.

Re-Facebooked! Oh man, we love it.

The irony here, of course, is that this is all coming from Bloomberg, who — despite staying away from the evils of social networking — has said plenty of stupid things.

Unfortunately for Brooklyn, MTV Brings VMAs to Barclays Center

On Sunday, August 25, MTV will be broadcasting its Video Music Awards from the Barclays Center, so if you live anywhere near the arena, you might want to just leave town that weekend.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s happening. In fact, here’s a couple terrible statements from Michael Bloomberg and Marty Markowitz to prove it. We honestly cannot decide which is more annoying, but the early edge goes to Markowitz.

Bloomberg:

Brooklyn is home to icons like the Cyclone in Coney Island and the Brooklyn Bridge, and now it can lay claim to the MTV Video Music Awards.

Likening the status of the Brooklyn Bridge to the VMAs has got to be illegal somehow.

Arthur Sulzberger Made $6.9 Million Last Year

Arthur Sulzberger, chairman of The New York Times Company, is doing quite well. Not that you asked, but just in case you were wondering, things couldn’t be better.

According to The Wall Street Journal, in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, the Times reported that Sulzberger earned a whopping $6.9 million in 2012. That’s up from $5.9 million in 2011.

Not bad, right? Sure, it’s not Michael Bloomberg money, but hey, you have to start somewhere.

Michael Bloomberg is Worth $27 Billion

According to Forbes’ latest billionaire list, Michael Bloomberg — mayor, media maven, soda hater — is worth $27 billion. That’s an increase from 2012, when he was worth a pathetic $22 billion.

Despite all that money, Bloomberg only ranks as the 13th wealthiest person in the world. The number one spot is held down by Carlos Slim and family, with $73 billion. He is followed by Bill Gates ($67 billion), Amancio Ortega ($57), and Warren Buffett ($53.5).

For the full list of people with way more money than all of us combined, click through. Ladies, we suggest you don’t even bother. Out of the 1,426 total people on the list, only 138 of them are women.

Because the media is nothing but precise, that list has now been narrowed down to about 834 potential buyers. Below are all the ones we found mentioned, but we’ve surely missed one or 500.

Let’s Guess Who is Buying Time Inc.

Alright people, the rumor of the day is that Time Warner is currently in talks with a “serious buyer” who will purchase Time Inc., yet allow Time Warner to retain at least three magazines, including Time, Sports Illustrated and Fortune. According (oddly enough) to Fortune, “A meeting of the buyer’s representatives” is happening today.

A couple questions arise from this rumor. For starters, why would Time Warner not want to keep People, the most financially robust Time Inc. title? The second — and most important — question: Who is buying? Below are just a few guesses. Feel free to add any in the comments/hate mail.

Michael Bloomberg (Hmmm…)

Rupert Murdoch (Interesting!)

Disney (???)

Warren Buffett (2012 was newspapers, 2013 is magazines!)

Donald Trump (Just so everyone has something to be mad about)

Michael Bloomberg is an Ass Man

New York’s cover story this week — written by Jonathan Van Meter — is an in-depth look at councilwoman Christine Quinn, who will most likely be our next mayor.

There’s plenty in the piece worth reading, but one part that caught our eye was when our current head honcho, Michael Bloomberg, revealed himself as an ass man:

Later in the evening, the host interrupted me to point out that the mayor himself had just arrived. Did I want to meet him? Sure. My friend and I followed the host over, shook Bloomberg’s hand, and my friend thanked him for his position on gun control. Without even acknowledging the comment, Bloomberg gestured toward a woman in a very tight floor-length gown standing nearby and said, ‘Look at the ass on her.’

To be fair, acknowledging a nice rump is much easier than discussing the intricacies of gun control.

Out of Bankruptcy, Tribune Company Plans to Sell Pretty Much Everything

Anyone want to buy a newspaper? How about a TV station? Or maybe you’re more of a web fan, in which case careerbuilder.com might interest you. Either way, if you’re a media mogul with deep pockets, The Tribune Company has something for you.

The company has just emerged from bankruptcy with a new board, and they’re planning a fire sale. According to the Chicago Tribune, the Tribune Company wants to sell its eight newspapers, 23 TV stations and various sites, like Career Builder.

The papers — which include heavyweights like the Tribune and The Los Angeles Times — are only valued at about $623 million total. The TV stations and web properties — including WPIX and national cable channel WGN — are worth much more; at about $2.85 billion.

Somewhere, Rupert Murdoch, Michael Bloomberg and Warren Buffett are counting up the change in their respective piggy banks.

Michael Bloomberg Is Maybe Buying The Not-For-Sale Financial Times

All the way back in February of this year, Michael Wolff speculated that Michael Bloomberg was considering purchasing The Financial Times. However, a spokesperson for the FT quickly shut the door on that, when he told us that the paper “is not for sale.” Then in October, more rumors about Pearson putting the salmon business paper on the block emerged. Now the New York Times is again bringing up the Bloomberg - FT connection.

Citing “three people close to Mr. Bloomberg,” the Times reports that Bloomberg — along with Reuters, which Wolff called as well — is weighing the pros and cons of buying the FT. Apparently Bloomberg has been caught appreciating the paper and its layout quite a few times, and in typical Bloomberg fashion, even joked about how he’s one of the few people who would even consider purchasing a newspaper in today’s digitally-focused world:

Bloomberg Endorses President Obama

Michael Bloomberg has been avoiding offering support for Mitt Romney or President Barack Obama, but Hurricane Sandy changed that. Bloomberg has officially endorsed Obama, citing the President’s work to tackle climate change.

“Our climate is changing. And while the increase in extreme weather we have experienced in New York City and around the world may or may not be the result of it, the risk that it might be — given this week’s devastation — should compel all elected leaders to take immediate action,” wrote Bloomberg, in an op-ed for Bloomberg View.

“We need leadership from the White House — and over the past four years, President Barack Obama has taken major steps to reduce our carbon consumption, including setting higher fuel-efficiency standards for cars and trucks.”

Bloomberg even took some time to jab Romney, for that pesky habit of flip-flopping:

Forbes Lists 400 Richest (White) People in America

The economy is still in the crapper, so why don’t we celebrate that by looking at Forbes’ list of the 400 richest people in the nation? As usual, pretty much everyone on the list is white. If that surprises you, please read the following very carefully: White people own everything. It’s not fair, but it’s true.

Bill Gates leads the pack this year with a total net worth of $66 billion, followed by Warren Buffett ($46 billion) and Larry Ellison ($41 billion).

As for New York media moguls, our Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, comes in at a respectable 10th, with $25 billion. Rupert Murdoch is tied for 36th with Mark Zuckerberg, at $9.4 billion. We’re pretty sure that makes them best friends, but we’re still waiting on confirmation of that.

A few others: Samuel Newhouse comes in at 46 with $7.4 billion; Donald Newhouse ranks 51st, with $6.6 billion; and Mort Zuckerman ranks 190th, with $2.4 billion.

For the full list, click through.

New Yorker Cover Pokes Fun at Bloomberg Soda Ban

Sometimes a magazine cover is just so perfect. Take the latest New Yorker, which sums up our feelings about Mayor Bloomberg’s idea to ban large soda sizes.

Owen Smith, the man behind the illustration, told The New Yorker, “When I heard about Bloomberg’s plan, on the national news, to make large sodas illegal, my mind immediately went to ‘Are people going to jail for this?’”
